I'd like an ES345 or 355 but where to find the money ? I can't sell my car and amps, I need these to go playing gigs. I'm not a bank robber so how to do ?
I maybe have a solution but it could take a very long time because of the forms of the table and the bottom. I'm a student in lutherie and my teacher told me it's possible to do and this would be easier to make it in massive maple than sheet by sheet. However this would take many more time. Following him, that would sound a little better acoustically (and I don't mind). But I don't know if I really have time ??? I must work to earn money too.
I had the same problem as you have: the dying wish for a good Gibson ES, but lack of financial means. I bought a 333 for 1.000 USD second hand, changed the pups for Classic '57's (2nd hand), bought a black pickguard and there you go. I am not saying that I have the exact same instrument as Johnny is playing on this vid, but this how close I can get with the means I have. If you can find, try it!!
If you can't affort a 335 or 345, try to get your hands on a 333! Half the price of a 335 but build with the same materials when it concerns the body and the neck. Ok, satin finish and slightly cheaper (but still Gibson) pickups, but hey, it's a real USA Gibson. Try one!
I love Strats myself, you cant get that sound from anything else, but I love Gibsons too. Thats a really nice, sweet tone from that ES345. Been thinking of getting one myself.

One things for sure, this guys hooked on gibson.
He's talking about other guitars not being balanced (one string louder than the other) and that you don't find that with gibsons. That's just bullshit. Either he doesn't know what he's talking about half the time or he's saying what gibson told him to say.
I think what he's talking about is the higher strings overpowering the lower strings, which isn't uncommon. Through an amp my ibanez acoustic electric and my friends strat have that problem. I have to crank the bass just so you can hear everything the way its supposed to be heard.
I played a Strat since '90, installed different pickups and shit, and finally came to a friends house where I found my new love: a '65 Gibson ES-120T. Plugged into an old Kitty Hawk amp, fooled around with it for five minutes and bought it off of him right that day. OH BOY, what a TONE !!! I will keep my Strat for some 16+ fret access reasons, but there has never been a greater blues tone in my life than from that "student" model ES. I'm never ever gonh' sell it again. It's GOT to be a GIBSON !!
ramone; This guitar has just been re-released by Gibson (i think for around $3,500). Not available in Canada however. Some say the quality of the new release isn't the same as the original. Some don't like the Varitone switch and have it removed. (check 'Harmony Central' reviews on this guitar before buying it)
I really dig the new reissues; thin neck, classic pickups, and the varitone is actually quite useful. Not sure about it sucking any tone like a lot of the Harmony Central reviews say, its very basic wiring. Only downside is the price, hopefully I can find a used one at a reasonable price. Now, if Gibson make a quality V with the 57 humbuckers and interesting inlays, I'd probably buy that.
ramonesacid: Yes, i agree. Mind you Albert King got a great tone from his Flying "V". I think he had just the standard h/b's...although they could've been P90s.
The man who really made a Gibson-345 talk was Matt "Guitar " Murphy. Matt's sound was haunting & unique...sent chills up your spine. Listen to him back Memphis Slim on the CD "M.S. At The Gate Of Horn".(from 1960) ..or check out Matt Guitar Murphy's films here on this site.
ramonesacidpillsh; Yes, that's him! Matt is very ill these days since suffering a stroke. If you ever want to hear Matt at his best then listen to his days when he backed Memphis Slim (around 1959) This was the time when he used the ES-345 and his solos were long. For some reason he changed to using Korean "Cort" guitars in the 1990s.
The ES-345 has a UNIQUE sound unlike any other guitar. the ultimate BEST for Blues playing!(better than BB Kings ES-335) The range of tones available are endless and it's really comfortable & light.(unlike most Les Pauls)
changexperience; Alot of artists take out the Varitone. They say it's a nuisance. The ES-345 isn't heard alot these days which is a shame. Everyone seems to be using Strats!
IT'S GOTTA BE A GIBSON!!!!

Gibson guitars are great but I totally hate them for making so few and overpriced left-handed models...
