  • check out 'impact winter' where margaret seems oh-so enthralled with the good looking ups guy.

  • so guys # 1 &2 show up to look at the pretty lady and then guy # 3 shows up to look at the pretty lady and then Margaret shows up and it's NOT to look at the pretty lady? that doesn't make sense!

Of course she's there because of the lady, there wouldn't be a gag if Margaret wasn't gay.

And by the way, lesbians can get pregnant too

  • I loved Leo's reaction at the end. Dawning realization...

  • It is probably intended to imply that Margaret is gay. Tobey response seems to be a realization of this, especially given the setup with all of the other people wanting to see this person for reasons for attraction. During the shows run their were some complaints about the series not having anyone in the [fictional] White House or its administration be gay, so this might have been an attempt to deal with that complaint.

  • Hmm...I actually never got that, I just thought she was weird, but maybe it is true. Eh, who cares, Margaret is funny.

  • *shrugs* So, maybe the character was bi.

And, the look on Toby's face when it dawns on him is so funny!

  • *shrugs* So, maybe the character was bi.

And, the look on Toby's face when it dawns on him is so funny!

  • This was absolutely implying that Margaret is a lesbian! I love it. You can tell because of Toby's face after she leaves; he realizes it and smiles a little bit.

  • @BelieveIt1051 Josh couldn't shut the door. No chaperon.

  • @effyleven I was talking about peanut head. He should have shut the door to get on with the interview. But hey, he's a liberal. Probably doesn't know how to operate a doorknob.

  • I'm reminded of an old expression: If you hear hoofbeats, don't go looking for zebras.

Far and away, the most obvious explanation is that Margaret is attracted to the beauty queen, just like the men are. Is it possible that she just wants to see a celebrity? Sure, anything's possible. But the scene is clearly meant to be funny, and that explanation isn't funny.

And the writers would never have sent such a strong signal that she swings that way, if we weren't supposed to believe it.

  • I always got the impression that this was just yet another thing showing how Margaret is a bit weird.

  • Or, the character could just be curious, knowing every man on staff has made it a point to go in Toby's office?

  • I think the point was to imply that Margaret was a lesbian. Only to find out in season seven that she wasn't.

  • This is ridiculous, margaret gets pregnant and this scene is just showing margarets curious nature, as shown with the countless times Leo refers to how she is right outside his office door listening etc

    end of essay.

  • @Var1ety

Gee - I never knew lesbians could not get pregnant - you moron.

The scene definitely implies that Margaret is attracted.

If you can;t figure that one out, dear, perhaps best stick to Grey Anatomy and other elementary programs for elementary minds.

  • I disagree :)

  • r maybe she`s bi... just adding

  • actually, i think margaret is an omnidykan. she will love on anyone. but that red hair makes her a argonian. so here's the question... would you rather have sex with carly simon, or joan jett? inquiring minds want to know...

  • American Turkey Basters Union. Join or DIe.

  • Come to Canada and marry me Margaret!

  • OMG! Margaret IS a Lesbian! A quirky, silly, hot red-headed lesbian. It all makes sense now... or not! Personally I just love her hair and lipstick. " >

  • Doesn't Margaret get pregnant in season seven? Was it her girlfriend with a turkey baster?

  • more like margrets nosy :)

  • I'm with you, nosiness, for sure

  • I love margaret. She probably just went in there to see what all the fuss was about :P

  • what's the name of the hot chick from Bhutan?

  • the character of Margaret is deliriously odd, it's what makes her so fun to watch. This is one of those tricky things: it's perfectly reasonable to assume several ideas from the scene because it's open ended.

  • god who cares, besides i think they put her in this episode for the obvious smack on the knee laugh lol

  • Throughout the series Margret flirts with Bruno, Lord John Marbury, and continuously flirts with Joe Quincy. She is also pregnant in the last season. I've watched the entire series and have never come away with the impression that she is meant to be a lesbian.

  • @EverTheSameIllusion This was post-Sorkin, as was noted earlier. I get the distinct impression some "new guy" said "We need to expand our liberal base after all the 'conservative' stuff we pushed while Aaron was around, so let's make someone on the show gay."

  • @EverTheSameIllusion - I think the idea behind this scene was that Margaret was attracted to women, rather than that she was a lesbian. I could easily see her being bisexual.

Also...as much as I love this show, continuity was never its strong suit. There are a ton of contradictions about things like the character's backgrounds. I don't think the writers would let a few scenes of Margaret flirting with men stop them from depicting her as a lesbian, if that's where they wanted to take it.

  • I have known many straight women who would check out other women that friends of theirs knew, or just met, typically, trying to determine if the "new girl" was suitable for their friend(s). It's actually very common.

  • Margaret is preggers in the last season. It doesn't make her not a lesbian... but, you know... I'm just saying....

I thought she was a great character... obviously less defined than others in the cast thus less dimensional... but always an odd, funny presence. Her relationship with Leo was a nice part of the show... and with Bruno.

  • Right, it definately does NOT make her not a lesbian. Because if you knew any lesbians, you'd know, boy do they get pregnant! ;-)

  • Oh, what, everybody clicks thumbs down on that? Lesbians get pregnant all the time. What am I, making this stuff up?

  • Imho, the fact that Margaret is in Toby's office doesn't mean she's gay. But the smile on Toby's face is sooo not innocent. Like he finally "gets" it.

And she wouldn't have to be bi to get pregnant or to think that Marbury is a nice and educated man!!

I like that theory that Margaret loves women :-)

  • Nice? Marbury? *snickers*

He's obnoxious and annoying (although his opinion of Abbey's boobs is very similar to mine ;D)

  • The West Wing is one of the finest shows in television history, if not THE finest.

    And Margaret: you're cool. :-)

  • I'd love to see some other clips that back up the Margaret = lesbian thing! I'm all for the subtext, but I never noticed anything particularly strong with Margaret (beyond my usual "OMG, the female WW staffers are sitting next to each other at the theatre in fancy clothes; it's totally a date !!11!one!" kind of way, LOL).

  • Wow, because yeah, there's no other way to have children than from being in a heterosexual relationship. All those pregnant lesbians, it's just because they were driving stick somewhere.

  • Don't be hating. I didn't say it would be bad if she were gay. I just said I didn't think she was.

  • @CrashCart9 Yes, but it's hard for lesbians to get pregnant BY ACCIDENT, which is what CJ implies is what happened.

  • It's alright to be lesbian and have a crush on a guy sometimes. ... For that matter, it's okay to be bisexual. :)

  • Yeah I think you're reading way too much into this...

  • There are others scenes. She asks Leo if she should stay in the room while (very beautiful) Ainsley Hayes is there for her interview. Cant see the White House Chief of Staff continuing to employ a secretary who was generally starstruck and awkward. In the above clip, the point is obviously being made that her reaction to the beautiful woman is the same as that of the men. In her job she'd see very important people all the time, a beauty queen wouldn't be that awe-inspiring, except for her looks.

  • Margaret was never hinted to as being a lesbian. In this scene she's being star-struck and awkward, as usual. And there are no other scenes to support that suggestion

  • yeah....what?

  • except margaret gets pregnant with john hoynes' baby in a later episode

  • no way, dude

hoynes gets with CJ, lewinsky and any white house man, woman or animal you want except margaret.

but what about bruno ? he offered her a kind of necklace in season 4, didn't he ? like a dog necklace, with her name on it. charming.

  • I love Bruno. Except when he jumped ship and joined Arnold Vinick. Traitor.

  • I'm not sure where I heard this (one of the episode commentaries or special features on a DVD, I wager) but the actress, NiCole Robinson, says that though it was never established, she wonders if that's not who it was for the very reason of the necklace.

  • Those two auxiliary staffers always crack me up. They seem like the Harold and Kumar of the Aaron Sorkin world of politics.

  • You wouldn't happen to have the rest of the episode, would you?

  • Exactly! So glad you caught on to the point of the OP posting the clip!

  • what were the other "more subtle" scenes that you refer to? margaret's character was quite an enigma...especially with the whole pregnancy thing and now this.

  • Has anybody considered the fact that she might have dropped in to catch a glimpse of Miss Universe (or Miss World or whatever she is) because she is a celebrity and not because she's a ridiculously attractive woman and Margaret's got the hots? I don't get the vibe that she's a lesbian from this, just that she's interested.

If Mr. Olympia swung by my office, I'd probably go sneak a peek. Doesn't mean I'm gay.

  • you're no fun.

  • i swear. what a butthead ;-) aha

  • @Technosquid I love you

  • Are you sure...?

  • @Cinderelephant i agree i never go that she was a lesbian. it is however an interesting thought

  • @Cinderelephant Is that the reason you think those guys dropped in too? The gag is in having three guys and then Margaret. There's no gag if her reason isn't the same as theirs.

  • @Cinderelephant

all women are lesbian....atleast the hot ones ;)

  • @Cinderelephant Oh but i think it does.

  • Hahahahaha! I totally missed this when I was watching the episode on TV. That's hilarious! I looooooove Margaret!

  • from which season and episode is this from!?

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Season 6, Episode 14 - The Wake Up Call

  • righty-o

    thanx

  • I'd love to hear her talk dirty in Dzongkha.

  • ROFL!!!!! LOOK AT TOBY'S FACE!!

  • She came in because the other lady was famous not because she's a lesbian.

  • But wasn't she pregnant around seasons 6/7. It was only shown once, to the suprise of Leo and someone else

  • She was pregnat. I think it was Kate who said to CJ "I didn't even know she was married," and CJ just kind of glared back at Kate, like, "she's not... don't ask questions."

  • It was Josh who said that he didn't know she was married.

  • @Technosquid what episode whas that??

  • @Technosquid

Actually it was Josh, I don't remember the episode, but he was already with Santos.

  • @Technosquid it was josh

  • Just because she chose to have a baby doesn't mean she's not gay. (viz. Heather has two mommies, etc.) However I did not get a 'gay' type of vibe off her looking at the girl in this clip, whereas I have in other scenes.

  • WOW... SO ITS TRUE!

  • She might have been gay, now that you point it out. But, I always thought she was just rubber-necking. That woman is rather glamorous. I could see why she would want to gawk. Plus, she's a gossip queen.

  • OMG! I have watched every episode at least three times, I never caught on the the Margaret lesbian theory!

  • lmaoooo damn shes hot

  • LOL Margaret isn't a lesbian. If she had of been she wouldn't have been trying to get hot guys spaces in the nuclear bunker, would she?

Always appreciate West Wing clips though.x

  • maybe she's bi

  • Maybe...but I never read a single word by the writers or the actors to indicate that. I too have watched every episode several times and my own theory is that Margaret is a blow up sex doll.(No offense to the actress - she is brill).

  • I believe you're watching a scene that was written by the writers that indicates that she's gay/bi.
