He may have no doubt been slightly 'merry' but I think more than anything it was largely upscripted, unplanned, unrehearsed and quite spontanious and made up on the spot. Many guests appearances were 'off the cuff'. Have a look at the Bowie clip after 'Boys Keep Swinging'. Totally unscripted obviously.
