  • ELECTION NIGHT POWER RANGERS!

    KIMBERLY HART '11!

  • If you'd like to hear the entire theme, it's on a site called networknewsmusic-dot-com.

  • I always thought this theme was GREAT! It got you all excited about the campaign(s).

  • I hope someone can please upload the full version of Mancini's march. And I hope NBC restores the use of it in its coverage of presidential elections. This movement elevates the mood of any political contest. That's something we all need.

  • True fact: The reason NBC News stopped using the Mancini theme after '92 is that when it came time to start planning for the '96 coverage, the news division's then-head of special projects discovered he'd misplaced his copy of the CD. So even though there were hundreds of other copies of it located all over the country, he decided, "Ah, screw it, it's been 20 years anyway, let's just order a new one."

  • This theme did not proceed into 1996...but it does seem to be a long-running theme.

Also, is it me or is the "NBC Special" animation much more 1986 than 1992? (It probably is, come to think of it.)

  • @raymieX Yes, the NBC Special animation arrived along with the current logo in 1986. They still occasionally use it for the Christmas Mass coverage from Vatican City.

    Ross Perot = ultimate spoiler

  • I thought Letterman left NBC before Leno even started. Oh well, at least NBC never made another mistake with who hosts the tonight show after the debacle of who would replace Johnny Carson :sarcasm:

  • Little did we know in 1992.

  • They ran that theme for 20 years. Starting in 1976.

  • by none other than henry mancini. then they commissioned john williams to redo the music for all nbc news broadcasts

  • Republican or Democratic, Ross Perot gave us all a scare in '92(and to a lesser extent, '96.)

Of course, all he wound up doing was displaying how hard it is to win the presidency if you're independent or third-party.

  • cbs had a better theme.

  • i have that theme with me

  • Damn. I was a Sophomore in HS when this all went down. And I totally remember that NBC opening theme (because I mostly watched NBCs coverage of the election that year).

  • I like this theme as well as the one they're using now!

  • When Tom Brokaw reported the death of Henry Mancini in 1994, he mentioned that he will be missed on Election time, for that theme song. And they closed NBC Nightly News that evening with that theme song.

Wish I could find it somewhere else.

  • At least they used the NBC Special logo. Wish they'd do that at Thanksgiving.

  • The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is technically considered to be an episode of NBC Today for production purposes.

  • It is? Gosh, then it must be a really long episode of Today. They don't even break for weather or the news.

Oh, technically. Then that means Brad Lachman "technically" works for NBC News.

  • Good tune

  • Good Lord Jay and Dave with dark hair!

  • You got that right BendikHolden.. I'm tired of Republicans in the White House..

    Obama '08

    Can't Wait..

  • but, will the Obama administration raise your taxes? ah, that's the problem.

    McCain/Palin '08

  • ELECTION NIGHT ROCKS!

    OBAMA '08!

  • That intro is fucking nice. With a few touch-ups, it could hold up today.

  • its great music, but the music they have now is awesome

  • I do like that theme music.

  • This is from the June 1992 primary election. This apparently was a special broadcast at 11:35 p.m. EDT.

  • bring back that theme

  • this is so fuckin ill

  • wow this is WAY back in the day

  • stop with your new world order conspiracies

  • How can Hillary win in November if she isn't the nominee?

  • This theme was first used in 1976 and was updated in the 80s

  • Written by Henry Mancini, who wrote "Pink Panther" theme and NBC Mystery Movie theme.

  • Henry Mancini also wrote "Newhart", "What's Happening!" & "Tic Tac Dough" (1990-Patrick Wayne).

  • Love this theme music !!

  • lol at the graphic literally taking 30 seconds

  • great music. it is amazing how technology moves on. there were no blogs, no internet, no where near as much in depth coverage as there is today.

  • horrible music

  • Yes, horrid indeed. CNN's election music is the best, MSNBC's next best

  • what do you expect, it was the early 90's hahaha. MSNBC has got the best music now.

  • That was the set they used for NBC Nightly News until 1999.

  • This was the last election that NBC used Mancini's "Salute to the President" theme.

  • I love that thematic march, which is as good as John Williams' "Mission" theme.
