Hi everyone - indeed this song should be played in open G with a capo on the 4th - at the time I recorded this I just winged it - but the basics of how you play it remain the same - enjoy!
@lightleggyreturns just pretend the capo is the nut all the way back, and use the same shapes if you want to play without one. I know you posted that a year ago!
Excellent lesson.....I didn't "get what I needed" but I did "get what I wanted" which was the correct way to play this song! I had the basics, but now I have the much needed little morsels I was missing. Thanks!
Its always amazing to see how such a lush sounding Stones song is actually played so easily by Keith Richards -- when demystified, an open tuning is usually the reason.
Contrast the simplicity of any Stones song to some of the obscure chord voicings found in many Beatles songs.
Thanks for breaking down one of the musical masterpieces of the 20th Century.
it is for reference. You are arguing semantics, actually. In any event, Keith does both of these songs in open G. I do Brown Sugar in open E, not sure what Keith does.
when and where did ANYONE ever see Keith do this standard tuned? Would love to see the link. I don't think you can do it in standard tuning and get the voicing correct. There is a guy on here, his name is Daviemfc or something like that. Look for him.
I thought he was playing in standard for the rock and roll circus version. You can't see his hands. Mick Jagger is in the way the whole time. But I learned it with a capo on the 3rd fret. It is not a comfortable position to play it in if you don't use a capo.
Open E tuning is incorrect bro...It's capo is at the 8th fret..tune the A string to a B and the D to an E, the G to a Sharp...then ya go Boy!..Then ya get what ya need...
Thanks..........I tried a lot of ways to play this..........Open E works good........of course my brain has to transpose the left hand guitar...........Thanks anyway..........I love that song
Use open G, it is much easier for me, as the three middle strings are NOT re-tuned. It allows you to play 9ths, 6ths, 13ths, etc in open tune without having to transpose anything.
That may be correct, I used to play it like that. I think my response (been awhile) had more to do with the G tuning for general open tuning use. e.g.; It;s easy to play leads and chords and slide, all at once in the G tuning. I notice he has a couple of notes in here that I missed, and vice versa :-) I think it's because we all hear different stuff and keith doesn't play it the same, all the time.
Hi Everyone - Actually I am right handed and my guitar is not upside down - I think it seems that way as I just recorded this from my iMac camera and maybe it flipped the image - sorry to confuse!
sorry dude, you are getting me confused with that upside down playing. I just played it in standard tuning and it definitely is in Bt then to E, so you must have it tuned some kind of wierd way, it has to be close to an open E because the capo could not make a b at the 8th fret otherwise. Example. Tumbing dice open g capo 4th fret, in b, hammer to C#m. Do you have it uned toopen E minor?
No offense, but U R playing in open "G". The "lick"is a hammer on the 1st fret on the b and a hammer on on the 2nd fret of the d string (when u hit only those 3 notes is goes back and forth betwen G and Am. The song actually sounded fairly well. 2 bad U have UR guitar upside down without mention. A Begginer would be FU. I knew what U were doing even if U did not.. Thanks for teaching me the song. I just need to check the pitch on my tuner,, but Keef likes a capo at 7th fret almost always.
nice tutor... keith richards basically re-invented the stones songs based on open e and open g tuning... thanks to Ry Cooder. stones based on simple rythmn and blues, clean tele\strat and backbeat drums and bass.. sorry to go off topic... but nice instructional vid peace
Yep - I actually just recently discovered open tunings and all their glory - makes SUCH a difference when your playing these songs that were recorded in open tunings
Very nice! You're one of few people who cover this song and actually tune it to an open E and uses a capo. I wish you had a video of you playing this entire song, can you do that?? Again, very nicely done. I love this song.

It's not called the D string when playing open E tuning.
