Thanks Spacepatrolman, for the heads-ups, on this movie! There are so many great movies, out there, over the decades. Personally, I prefer the older movies, when the stunts and action was real, not computer graphics, and with Lee Marvin in this one...Enough said, I'll look for this one, on DVD. You know, it's times like this is when I miss Tower Records. That was my official DVD buying store. Now, I go to this place on Haight Street called Amoeba Records...Great and large collection stuff!
@THEATHLETICBACHELOR yea the original tower was in san fransisco then there was one in new jersey in the same building that had this crooked stereo shop record store crazy eddie i used to listen to cds in tower therse a video in here chrissie hynde live at amoeba records
Anyone know in a classic WWII movie when a soldier yells at the other soldier in a tank caught on fire, "Jump Joe, JUMP!...I can't, I got no legs!!!!!!!" Who knows the name of that classic WWII movie??...It's either in the 1940's or 1950's
When Saving Private Ryan was released critics said it was the first WWII film that didn't glamorize the "good war." Those critics had obviously never seen Attack (or Battleground or Hell is Heroes or A Walk in the Sun.) It's not surprising that Attack comes across as a realistic war film: Lee Marvin, Jack Palance, and Eddie Albert were all WWII combat veterans.
@mkeogh76 That's what threw me when Saving Private Ryan came out. I saw both Attack and Battleground on TV back in the 70s and the other two in the 80s. Hell is for Heroes is gritty as hell. Made war look pretty nasty to me. I was in the Marines when I saw it too!
The German tanks in this film are actually, like in many other films, non-German tanks mocked up to look like Panzers. In this film they are actually Stuart tanks.
I always wondered why they were never able to get actual Panzers, I mean war movies today make it seem like you can find a war era Panzer at the local Wal-Mart, so explain why was it so hard for film crews between 1945 and 1989 to find actual German tanks??? I'm sure there were plenty of captured ones just sitting around army depos or at museums
@snakes3425 Probably they're either too lazy or such. Another reason is, there's only very few German tanks that survived the war. Like what happened to the Tiger, only 6 survivors, with only 1 (apparently) in running condition. Nevertheless the mock-up was horrible. As horrible as those Patton tanks painted to look like German.
Tiger 131, which is in it' North African colors, there's also only one running example of a Tiger II. I know they still do mock-ups of German tanks given how rare they are for movies, but they at least try to make them resemble Tiger I and Tiger IIs. Back in the day I loved Battle of the Bulge's tank battles, but looking back yeah they weren't even trying with the tanks all they did was paint the Patton tanks grey and put the German cross on the side and this is just pathetic
@snakes3425 Patton, Tobruk, Raid on Rommel (which re-used much of Tobruk's footage), and Cross of Iron's lame sequel, Breakthrough, was "pathetic" like BoTB; they just re-painted Patton and Walker Bulldog tanks as Panzers. Not to mention the Battle of Neretva, although using mocked-up T-34 tanks as Tigers, they repainted many Shermans and T-34s to portray other tanks.
The role played by J Palance was his best ever-especially the scene when he crawled back to the hideaway and confronted E Albert. Great acting by Palance and Albert !
@BH21206 they really ran over jack palances arm with a tank they dug a trench in the ground and put his arm in it when he crawled out the blood was pouring out he must have been squeezing fake blood out of a rubber ball like when you get your blood pressure checked ask the special effects department
Nope. You are thinking about "Breakthrough," made in 1950, starring John Agar. That film is no where near as good as this one. However, I have both in my collection on VHS.
@26highstreet it had no coaperation from the military and was banned from being shown on military bases, but it is a great film on all levels dramaticly [ originaly a play] musicly ,cinamatographicly...
top film . sort of an antie war film.brave to show that not all americans in ww2 , or any one in a side four the good, is them selfs good. top notch acting with no exceptions.
They really ran over Jack Palances arm with a tank they dug a trench in the ground and layed it in there,he told the director you have to do it first,he said it felt like it was breaking his arm in half.
Thanks so much for posting this. One of my favorite war films. Intense performance and great last scene from Jack Palance. Eddie Albert and Lee Marvin were great as well. Very different feel to this war film. Not a typical formula war movie. Flawed characters with a real sence of tension.
at myyearbook the sound, sounds like its coming through a faze shifter like your arm was run over by a tank and your brain isnt getting enough oxygen.
Lt.Costa shows what a combat leader is all about. He cared about his men, did not want them put in bad positions because of a incompetant coward like Cooney. He got what he deserved. Barlett was the one who got away scott free. I enjoyed this movie. My grandfather showed it to me when I was a kids he fought in Achen.Ansbach Germany, and the Hurtegen Forrest during the "Bulge" whe this movie was supposed to take place. Never forget "The Greatest Generation"
I know 2 machine gunners who were in the battle of the bulge one is Sid Bernstein who brought the Beatles to the US and booked them in Carneige Hall and She Stadium the other a cival engineer thought they should have starved the germans out of the forest.
@mrgbennet you used to be able to get the whole movie at myyearbook i played it for a room full of people everyone was crying at the end [ including me ive seen it 7 times 2 times on tv and 5 times on the internet] .
I only saw Attack once, many years ago on a 12inch B&W TV. I'll never forget the scene when Lieutentant Costa( Palance) comes back to get Captain Cooney (Edward Arnold). If anyone will post it I would appreciate it.Great cast.Unappreciated film.
This is one of the most underrated movies of all time.

@mkeogh76 Spielburg isnt a veteran just a murderer that killed vic morrow and 2 children

@mkeogh76 It's axiomatic that critics are idiots. And Spielberg lifted plenty from "A Walk in the Sun" for Private Ryan.

This was perhaps the first movie to make me start doubting the veracity of every dang thing the government shoved down our throats.
