I grew up with Zozobra burning every year and while at first I wished for the original sound effects, I finally let go and grooved with your experience. And by the end I was blown away.
He is pretty horrible, and taking control of all the sounds is what made is so intense in the end.
Sometimes, when I was young, you would hear people screaming "Burn" and some people screaming in terror from the fireworks which sometimes went awry, and the fire dancer used to be terrifically sensual and more like a demon-flame, the little glooms were cub scouts in sheets with eye-holes until someone thought they might get charred... lol
No sleep probably from smoking too much crack. Zozobra is nothing like burning man and if it was, Burning man would be "like Zozobra"..... Had you done your research, you'd know that zozobra has been around since 1924.
That guy is so creepy looking lol. I have a major fear of puppets, clowns or anything of that nature btw. My skin is crawling right now, but good vid none the less
Superb editing, makes the Zozobra event more exciting than it really is, just how awesome editing should be!!! Great choice of music as well! I was there with my family, they had a blast. Viva la Fiesta! VIVA!
I reshaped this experience into how it felt- very much like a weird dream without having slept for two days (long story for which YouTube does not allow enough characters for- you're spared) hehe
You wear your weariness well, Syd. Especially considering the seemingly overwhelming surrealness of the event itself. Is it just me, or does Zozobra look a bit like Will Ferrell's character in Zoolander? Maybe just the eyes. Regardless, i hope if all your troubles didn't exactly crash & burn along with Mr. Z, your caffeine high at least temporarily made you feel like they did. Thanks for sharing your roadtrip! :)
Wow! I've speechless. Amazing editing, Syd. I'll be watching this one again for sure. And great musical tips too - fitted the footage perfectly. Although I'm sure it was a great event, I'm almost inclined to believe that the video is better than the real thing was :)
I had to do this to reshape the experience into something less overwhelming than what it actually was. I'm not comfortable in big crowds so I couldn't be present. They were really rowdy and chanting "BURN HIM!! BURN HIM!!" I know I look like I was having fun, but I was sleep-deprived and a little nervous. hehe
I'm not one for big crowds either - and after your description of it, I'm now damned sure that watching the video footage is better than having been there :-))))
Strange how some of us have come to know fire as a way to renew..kind of a out with the old in with the unknown.....thanks for the video and the music.
Absolutely fantastic! Are you a professional director or producer? If not, you should be! That was so well filmed and edited that I felt as if I were right there. And gads, that Zozobra is one ugly marionette!
I understand that wanna-be status and occupy it myself on some things. It's a good place to park yourself so you can do what you love without it becoming work. :) Am sure if I were there in person, I would feel badly for the marionette. But he's still got a scary face!
I put on a good show of it, for sure. The fear I have of large crowds is definitely far from debilitating, but it does get in the way of my experience, if that makes any sense.
Thanks for always watching and commenting. I'm not very good about that myself, so I appreciate it, truly.
oh wow...how great was that. i would love to do something like that. i did take it in as much as possible. tried to take it in vicariously through your visual experience. thanks for sharing that syd and hol. take care.
Beautifully made video, Syd. Exquisite even. Although, I keep seeing Edward Woodward being dragged towards it, screaming 'Oh Christ! Oh Jesus Christ NO!'
oh! my! gosh! this has so much significance ! this IS like what they do at the burning man festival! i have to research why people all over this country are "(( really")) burning large men like figures! LOL, it has to mean something deeper then what they tell us...seriously . ok , im done flipping out in this comment. ty for your time :P ( and why the lil devil horns?) any idea? i guess i will look at the website. ok, now im leaving..really
Hey, if you learn anything, please let me know. I kind of made this vid as a personal question mark for myself. I'm right there with you about being perplexed by the whole thing.
Awesome, i have to go see this.

Nice job!

I'm glad you liked it. I left the sounds out cuz I got overwhelmed by the pitiful screams of Ol' Man Gloom as they burned him to ta crisp.
Am I pathetic or what, that I would feel bad for my own personified troubles...? ;o)

So, my taste in music sucks (as per your original comment), I'm a crack head, and I'm a fraud when it comes to serious journalism-lol.
Dude, you take this shit way too seriously. Zozobra, Burning Man...In the end, it's just a puppet on fire.
Thanks for commenting. Seriously. I will definitely check my facts next time I actually use facts. ;o)

This pretty much makes you the recipient of the "Most Courageous Viewing Award"
This is actually a cathartic cultural ritual for burning away all the gloom of the year. It doesn't work for me, either. lol

Wow, that was great. That looks like one cool festival.
There's something about these burning men & fireworks that draws you in, isn't there? :)

It can't hurt just to identify the things you want to let go. :) maybe I'll have a little firepit ceremony ;)
