Was this your first kit? I'm looking at assembling a kit and amp looking at Allen Amps as I've heard he's got very detailed instructions. I've just got to settle on blackface v. tweed.
Yes, this was my first kit build but I have repaired amps and other electronic stuff in the past. You don't need to be an EE but you do need to be able to read a schematic and identify parts correctly (know a resistor from a cap, read their values, etc.) to complete the build successfully. The Allen amps look a little pricey - check mojotone and ted weber as well.
@tmmbass Thanks for the quick reply. If I go tweed I'll go weber or mojotone. I can probably get through it.
I modded my Marshall Class 5 with a schematic and some help from a forum online. If I have a layout that says what goes where, I know the difference between components and can read their values with a guide. I don't understand all the science behind it, but my Marshall works and sounds better.
At 1:24 I'm just goofing on fast triplets with my right hand - slap with my thumb and pop twice with index and middle. It's something I tried to pick up from Victor Wooten's playing (but he's waaayyyy better than me.)
Awsome.. First person I have seen play bass guitar into one. Hey , thats why they made them in the first place. Nice Playing and great job on the build.
Thanks! - most of the stuff came from Mojo with Weber transformers. The P90s really sound better through the Bassman than humbuckers. Compared to a Deluxe the Bassman is a fuller deeper sound with a much more gradual breakup where a blackface Deluxe breaks up sooner but "sings" a little more on leads (hence the Tubescreamer with the Strat.)
Thanks to all for the positive comments! The amp cost around $800 in parts to assemble and I bought the cabinet. It took about 40 hours to put together but I was going slow in my spare time. It is a really nice sounding bass amp at low volume which a lot of folks overlook. Kind of similar to an Ampeg B-15 fliptop but with 4x10 speakers. Great for recording.
@tmmbass I've got a 1991 40th Anniversary Les Paul too, absolutely love it. But the pickups are actually P-100's in that model which is a stacked humbucker (unless of course you swapped the pickups out).
Nice amp. You made that amp and did a great job. What brand kit is it or did you buy all separate parts? I like your Les Paul. P90s are always better than humbuckers. How would you describe the tonal difference if you played the Les Paul thru a Deluxe Reverb instead which is a blackface Fender of course? Thanks.
40th Anniversary and a Bassman... well done sir, glad to know someone has the exact same taste as me!
