Magnificent car, but I'm surprised that it makes all those "beep, boop, beee-doop" sounds when the ignition is turned on. Seems a bit annoying for a Rolls.
Until BMW bought them out. Rolls were build with hundred of odd parts from various suppliers; making them very odd to service. Lucas, Bosh, GM, they had cheap sound system (Delco) the same you find in the old Cadillacs. etc.
Style wise and crafstmanship wise I agree and love these cars. Reliability was another issue!
The trouble was that before BMW bought them out, RR had a very small market and sold very few of their cars (not many people could afford one!) therefore there wasnt the money available for R&D and consequently had to source alot (most) parts from external suppliers... At least BMW is keeping RR as an elite car maker and not selling them by the dozen to every wanker and his dog like the monkeys at VW have done with Bentley, Bentleys they are ugly and common now with no exclusivity at all.... Sad
They are marvellous cars, and I've owned and driven them for 30 years, putting over 750,000 miles on them. However, people who think they can run them on a shoestring are not thinking clearly -- how on earth could a car with over 80,000 parts be maintained on a budget commensurate with a car of only 12,000 parts? As for the warning buzzer -- RR were always much more businesslike, and didn't fall for any cliches. I'd like to have seen this car properly started up and placed into gear ...
After my Volvo was totaled, my principal client found me two Spurs, one in Magnolia, & one in Black. I bought a new Lexus instead, simply for reliability/cost-to-own reasons. One RR was from '98 & the other from '96. Both had been immaculately maintained by reputable friends of my client. How much would I likely be spending per annum, on maintenance, had I bought one of the Spurs? I assumed the cost would run north of $10,000, if I drove 16,000 miles per year. How far off was my estimate?
I had a 89 Spur and it was a Great fun car to drive, but everytime I turned the key it always went through my mind, What's going to break First? These cars can be Horribly expensive to Run and maintain, eventually I sold mine before I had to spend any "real" money on it
It really annoys me that a car as expensive as a Rolls Royce can get away with having an annoying buzzer whereas a Dodge Daytona has a chime instead. I think Rolls Royce should be banished to the shadow realm for using an annoying buzzer in a car this expensive.
At 1:08, awesome! Machines coming to life! I love this lol.
Silver Spur was one of the most amazing 'Royces ever built. In my own opinion, it was the most elegant model available. Also like the Seraph series, but Spur is prettier. :D
they are not GOOD cars... They are modern masterpieces of art and engineering. They are the pinnacle of the automotive industry's efforts. there are no cars like them. me want big much.
I had an 86 Spur and now a 96 Spur, if you contemplate buying one, I would become a member of thr RROC and read, don't make a ton of comments, but read up to see if you are up to the challenge of upkeeping one of these cars. They are beautiful bits of art and certainly are woth putting time and money into but they do require time and or money.
Be careful. A Rolls mechanic told me to avoid 81-87. They have oil pump troubles and a few other things that are very costly. That would be up to 20,000 series. Anything after 20,000 or 1987 1/2 should be okay.
god damn was he trying to snap the key in the ignition when he started it?

Would you mind sharing what repair/maintenance has cost you, per mile?
Has anyone studied results of accidents in Spirits and Spurs? Relative to a Volvo 940, how safe is a Silver Spur?

I'm hopefully gonna get the Rolls Royce silver spirit 1980s model for my 18th birthday
