  • I saw this when I was only 8 years old. I didn't understand it at all but it's interesting that I remember I didn't judge the characters, I found it simply intriguing.

  • hmzhmm total gelangweilt wer will mit mir schreiben hab auch bilder von mir

  • huhuirgend jemand lust und laune af bissl cam chat mir ist so öde :(

  • to me this is jeremy irons best work. he is such an underrated actor.

  • i've never finished this movie. but i thought the book and the sue lyon one were HILARIOUS! this looks like soft core porn so far .. :\

  • omg... young humbert is absolutely gorgeous!!

  • right?? :) that's ben silverstone!

  • I agree. I saw him in a movie that was wildly different than this called get real and you can't take your eyes off him. sadly I haven't seen him in anything since and get real is no longer shown on tv but he seems like a sweet kid.

  • @hgchjk

Your right it's not a love story, but it's not exactly all about pedophilia, well at least that's not the main point. It's actually a tragiccomedy. The big difference in this story and most cases in pedophilia is that he DOES feel bad that he's taking away her childhood and he really does love her in a sick twisted way.

On second thought, it really just depends on your point of view.

  • woooaah rapist much??

  • I loved the book. I feel that both movies catered very well to the book. Sure, the 60's one was more safe, but the acting was incredible. I liked this one mostly for the narration and the costumes.

  • thats what happens when you have unprotected sex lol jk

  • hgchjk: Beyond HELP ?

  • hgchjk: Nabokov (no 'm') cleverly described dysfunctional relationships including failed Pedo-Adulto. Yet 8 yr olds in Scotland are made 'Morally & Criminally , Responsible' (10 in England & Wales), and the sensible Democratic Czech Republic has matched it's 'Age Of Criminal/Moral Responsibilty' to it's 'Age Of Sexual Consent' - at 14. Unlike the hypocrite US-UK Anglo/'Mock' Puritans for Scare Profit not 'protection', the Democratic Czechs are Sense Defenders not Sense Offenders. LOL-ita.

  • why do they look so exotic?

  • Jeremy Irons was the pefect actor to play HUmber-Humbert, this how I pictured myself the character. you are all right, his so voice is just bewitching !

To Playgroundxlove : almost all the soundtracks from the film were composed by Ennio Morricone and this amazing score is called "togetherness"

  • thanks! :-)

  • The song playing at the start is beautiful! does anyone know what it is?

  • his voice is so soothing, but at the same time dark and mysterious. even though it seems like hes just speaking, he still gives the words so much emotion at the same time. its strange.

i think his voice is gorgeous...

  • that is so sad.

  • he (Jeremy Irons) has got a great voice.

  • THESE KIDS AIN'T NO 14 YEARS OLD!

  • Muffin: You're right these overaged Hollywood characters are an insult to the intelligence of a four year old.

  • your right

  • teenagers CAN have sex with adults. if they have reached a certain age, that is. over here, that age is 16. nothing wrong with that, if they are at good mental health and do not get manipulated. america's laws are, in this point, kinda silly and old-fashioned. but that's got nothing to do with adultophilia. it's just called "love". adultophilia is something entirely different. and that's all i've got to say. end. :)

  • Who plays the girl who he loved as a child?

  • It was Emma Griffiths-Malin. Young Humbert was Ben Silverstone.

And I guess I agree with people who say they look older than 14, at least she does. I think they were around 17 at the time the movie was being made.

Anyway Lolita is amazing. I've read the book and now I'm starting on the movies. Beautiful music, no? I especially love the moment at 0:50

  • Yeah i love that moment too :-)

  • Humbert is an hebephile, rather than a paedophile.

  • if i remember right, the "real" lolita in the book was 12, maybe 13 years old. they changed her age in both movies; in the cubric one she's 16, in this one 15.

  • she was. he was with her from aug 47-aug48 when they travelled. she turned 13 on jan 1st 1948. he then settles in beardsley and she is 14. she begins her affair with clare quilty when she is 14.

  • randypan71: Well worked out dude. Those were the post-Nazi, more democratic days & decades before the fascist 1980s fraud-market mindwashed Murdochised-media started brainwashing millions of trusting morons with climates-of-fear for scare-profit not for true protection. Checkout South Park edition ' Nice' and non-victim past Adultophile serious academic Judy Levine's great 2002 book, " Harmful To Minors, The Perils Of Protecting Children From Sex ". Non victim Adultophiles Rock !

  • @doug: "adultophile" is a funny little word pedophiles made up to justify their actions. enjoy watching lolita, do what you want, but stop going on everyone's nerves by posting these odd, disgusting "pro-pedo" messages. thank you. @ randy: paedophile = pre-pubescent children, hebephile = pubescent children. so humbert = paedophile

  • MrsKatty: Some funny little anti-Adultophile self-justifiers protest just a little too much about something of which they are probably Dumbed-Down junk media MISinformed for climate-of-fear scare profit - not for true protection. Check serious academic Non-victim past Adultophile Judy Levine's great 2002 book " Harmful To Minors, the Perils Of Protecting Children from Sex" and the many other true Adultophile citations all junk-media ignored - and then come back all Wised-Up. LOL.

  • Mrskatty: We wonder are you a lover of that funny little brainwashing Tabloid-media - or in another funny little word, one of those scary " Tabloidophiles " ?

  • @DougPatton1: somehow i think you get "teenager" and "child" all messed up? i understand that in america; teenagers of, let's say 16-17, are, up to some point, not allowed to have sex with whom they want to. i think of that to be dumb, too. but children, of 12-13 years? no way. and no, i am not brainwashed. i am studying psychology and social pedagogy, so i like to think of myself as one that knows one or two things about kids.

  • MrsKatty: Study all you want, and all to the good, we all should never stop, but keep it wide & broad not narrow, shallow, hollow. What we don't like to address is often the increasingly common psychological disorder/defence mechanism " Denial ". Meanwhile tweenagers (those beings too often patronised by so called adults whose short-memory syndrome conveniently let's them forget that we all once were 'kids' ) increasingly laugh at & ignore power-and-control freak Victorian values. Adultos Rock

  • love this movie the concept is so interesing

  • Lol cars went so slow back then dogs could follow the car and jump up at the window.

This guy is a great actor btw.

  • EW: A slight error on " cars back then " - there many films where PRE-war cars are speeding and this is the POSt-war era with even faster cars and less speed restrictions, which are now only 55mph on US Interstate Highways. Dogs today still run and jump at cars moving slowly on local side streets before they speed up onto a highway or freeway - and away ! LOL(ita).

  • I apologize. I don't know anything about cars...

  • Woulda won a bunch o gongs but for U.S. P.C.C. - Pure Coward Creeps !

  • This is idiocy. Guess nobody could ever get close enough to having balls in order to put someone of the right age in the role. Lolita is not supposed to a sexy voluptuous teen sireness. It's her undeveloped youth that's so unnervingly rendered in the books. This is just an idiotic fangirl's wetdream rendition of my favorite novel.

  • Wellworm: Wellsaid. Ballsy Vlad wasn't happy with LaLaLand's (not Kubrick's) '62 cowardly copout, and though nice in '97 Swain was right in '91. Gutless US/UK/CAN/OZ/NZ Anglo 'mock'-Puritania is in total denial of Non-victim Adultophilia - Adultophiles rock !

  • Attraction to adults by underage kids is far more common than anyone might think -

    non-victim Adultophiles rock !

  • 0:00 - 0:04 & 1:46 - 2:01 is beautiful. Actually, the whole starting part is. Beautiful score to accompany, too. Very sad.

  • Jeremy Irons my Favourite actor of all time! I love his voice makes me melt!!

  • he played the voice of simba in lion king

  • He actually voiced Scar

  • u don't forget.....u just don't.....

  • i'm sorry but she is not 14...

  • correct! in book she is 12...or not!?

  • what a voice J. Irons has

  • THIS.

    *melts*

  • Perverted little bastard. Killed her with his filthy dirty dik.

  • You know, you CAN have massive lust for someone you love...

  • @AdrenalineAndLove

Of course! But I've read the book and it makes it quite plainly obvious that they barely like each other ^.^

  • @AdrenalineAndLove True. Not to refute your comment but just a sidenote to everyone: Massive lust can also easily be mistaken for love.

  • Nothing wrong with ' massive lust ' and as Woody Allen rightly said when asked if sex was depraved,

" If it's done right it is ! " LOL

  • I'm convinced that Annabel's character is based off of the poem "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allen Poe.

  • Annabel doesn't look 14.

  • Annabel is HOT

  • i remember reading this book when i was in hs and dont remember what the teachers take on it was but i vaguely recall him saying this wasnt pedophilia but more of a love story bc he lost his first love....umm if you are in love with a 14 yr old girl when ur 40 pretty much makes u a pedophile.

  • The book is about the power of language.

And she is much younger than 14.

  • do you mean the way the characters use dialogue..like the way humbert depicts mrs. hays in a deragatory light and the way dolores compliments/insults humbert throughout..? in other words the tremendous effects words can have?? i find it hard to believe it was only that and not at least to some degree commentary on sexual deviance/pedophilia???

  • The beauty of the novel is Nabokov's ability to take something as ugly as rape and pedophilia, and turn it into something beautiful and captivating. The defining characteristic of the novel is its narration (it has a unique style, poetic, sarcastic and manipulative). There will be some who try to analyze or interpret the novel as a commentary on pedophilia, rape, or sexual desire, but that wasn't Nabokov's intention. He wrote it as a book to be read -- not analyzed. Basically, it's a "good read"

  • Also, one of the major flaws of this movie is that it is missing the satirical tone of the novel.

The filmmakers tried to make a love story out of Lolita -- but Lolita isn't really a love story...

  • The genius of Nabokov's writing is that he manages to change the theme of the novel from a paedophile memoir to a love story, as disturbing as that is. The movie is meerly taking Humbert's perspective, and in Humbert's perspective the novel is a love story. From an outsiders perspective though, the novel (and movie) is an account of a paedophiles obsession with a 12 year old girl. So the movie was only taking the love story element from the novel, and not Humbert's perverted intentions.

  • no there another name for it a pedo is some one who is sexualy atracted to pre pubesent boy-girls..there is another name for some one who is sexuley atracted to pubesnt boy-girls

  • Pedophilia suggests a sexual preference for -pre-pubescent girls or boys. A 14 year old girl is not prepubescent, and the proper term is Hebephilia. Even then, this term implies a person sexually prefers that age range.. this doesn't apply here as it wasn't 14 year old girls, it was ONE girl he preferred. It IS a love story, it just happens to feature a 14 year old tease.

  • @darkstormstress22

Very true. The question it asks is "Can you condem him for falling in love?". Damn good book, but these two movies pale in comparison. Kubrick's version only getting the lead because it came first.

  • @darkstormstress22

    Very astute.

  • In the movie but in the book he is 100% pedophile he even fuck with very young prostitute at the beginning of the book

  • darks: In the book Humbert with his roving eye did refer to several 'Lolitas' through the years that strongly appealed to him - not just Dolores who he finally related to.

  • loss of innocence

  • 3:00 FAIL

  • best movie in the world

  • great photography in this film

  • I also think this lolita is a better actress and prettier than the old movie lolita.

  • Wow. I completely disagree. The original actress was prettier (in the face) and a much better actress and acted more like a teenager. This one is trying too hard.

  • I love jeremy irons,he's hot to me.

  • Eww im a guy why did i just thumbs up your comment lol ....

  • What's wrong with a guy thumbing up such a comment?

  • Because it's basically agreeing that Jeremy Irons looks hot. I'm not homophobic but i am straight and after i clicked thumbs up i felt kinda sick... lol

  • His first love was age appropriate. Lolita, not so much.

  • gran bel film

  • get that soundtrack by Ennio Morrocoine!! it is lush and haunting, just like the visuals mr.Lyne created

  • Quite definitely.

  • She's so hot here, and that guy is cute.

    Imagine if they had kids.

    Ooooh.

  • ponganla en español

  • CRY!! CRY!! MUHUHAHHAHAHA!

  • This movie is soooo boner inducing. I love it.

  • so is the book xD i have it w/me

  • james mason is way more handsome than jeremy irons. Kubrick's Lolita is till pretty good

  • James Mason is ugly! Iron's is way hotter!!

  • Humbert is supposed to resemble the celebrity that Dolores has a crush on.

  • does anyone know what song is in 00:00-02:00? pls tell me...

  • melanie griffith and lolita in same house i would never sleep lol

  • oh my god that house is dirty as fuck i would not want to stay there

but so far the movie is pretty good and i love lolis

  • Do you even know the true meaning behind the word Lolita? My guess is you think its a japanese fashion thing.

  • yeah i know but i was reffering to the fashion

  • Lolita is a nickname for Dolores, meaning sorrows.

  • Lolita is also a name given to young girls who are sexually precocious.

  • Melanie Griffith is way less annoying than that dreadful, whining Shelley Winters.

  • lolita is so beautiful!

  • que nadie escribe en español

    porque?

    bueno bye

    kiss

    :)

  • eso es cierto oigan tambien existe el español

  • why?

  • months...

  • the first part looks like a Gucci commercial lol

  • He reminds me of bill nye the science guy, ahaha

  • Hows this guy a pedofile when he likes a girl at his age....this girl looks like shes 18 or something

I mean they were both 14 that part...

  • no he became a pedo when he got older, that's a flashback of his youth, he obv wasn't a ped then

  • Obviously he isn't a pedophile here because he is a kid....

He's explaining why he thinks he's a pedophile...

  • This is my absolute favorite part of the entire movie.

It's solid story telling with extraordinarily beautiful music by Mr. Morricone.

  • Jeremy Iron is such a terrific actor perhaps one of the best

  • lolita was the perfect target for pedos, she came from a one-parent family, her mother was self-obsessed & promiscuous, absent father, she was abused by several older men which made her seem "precocious". Nabokov chose this scenario precisely

  • As for Charlotte, I've seen better acting from corpses.

  • Read the book, and you will see the great ressemblance. I think she is very true to the charlotte in the book.

  • She's just like she is in the book! :)

  • lol I like the old woman waving in the backround :)

  • 4 months later.... she died of Tiphus... LOL Obviously it wasn't intended to be funny I just thought it was funny with the timing of when it was said.

  • Jeremy Irons is very attractive!

  • This is was filmed so beautifully.

  • I'm sorry I voted it just one star. I didn't want to. I was moving the mouse and i clicked without intention.

  • 20 dollars month, thats alot back then i remember my dad payed that a week in the 70s

  • You know, I'm not for rape or anything. But you really can't control love. Love knows no bounds.

  • many people do immorral things in the name of love, I would just say no-self-control knows no bounds. Love does no such things.

  • whether he loved her or not is open to debate, but in the book he's often quite bitchy about lolita especially as she ages. In one part he plans to get her pregnant so that he can abuse their daughter... romantic huh? Lol. He's a typical pedo.

  • This love obviously knows some bounds, he didn't love her enough to wait until she was 18. He "loves" her because she's pubescent basically which isn't real love but a sexual thing. He does't care about her mind or personality. She is a sexual object to him and he admits as much, he concealed her mother's death from her to have sex with her, when she started to loose her nymphette charm he planned to get her pregnant and molest their little girl. These are not acts of love.

  • well said

  • exactly, he was a poet no doubt, & no one knows the real cause of his behavior... but he was a typical pedophile, they're known to worship girls of their ideal age & then discard them when they're too "old". I think he loved the idea of lolita, not lolita as a person.

  • He says so in the book. That he cannot wait too long for her, because soon enough she will be a college girl, "the worst of thing" I think he mentions.

  • You dont make much sense.

So if 2 18 year olds love each other alot

then after that he wants to do her.... does that mean he doesnt love her?

Try to think before you talk okay

  • What are you talking about? I'm not talking about two 18 year olds, I'm talking about a middle aged guy and a 12 year old kid.

  • Yeah i know, but two 18 year olds would still want sex

as this guy still want sex its all human nature

So you can say the 18 year old just wants sex with the other 18 year old only.

    Sex is part of love

I do agree is wierd and kinda sick but

you cant say when you have sex with someone doesnt mean you are using them

  • He explains in just before this clip started that they are only 14.... Not 18.

He's explaining that if this hadn't happened to him that he wouldn't be a pedophile. "I kept looking for her.... Long after I left my own childhood."

Because he and the girl didn't consummate their relationship (explained in the book) he is always looking for the young girl he fell in love with in other girls despite growing older himself.

  • Thanks for explaining. I doubt I'd ever read the book, and the movie makes one think maybe they made love when they were both young before she died. They fell in love, and he longed to consumate the relationship.

  • no some people are argueing that he is always a pedo...but i said no he cant be, pedos like younger girls, but he likes girls that still looks over 11

    that girl looks 18

  • It doesn't matter what you think she looks like. Her character is 14 and he is 14. He is explaining that because of his unfulfilled relationship with her he is now a pedophile because he's trying to find what he saw in her in other girls that are her age.

  • yes. I think all should read the book.

  • For some reason I imagined Charlotte a bit more... I don't know... frumpy and pushy. But I think I like the way the actress played her. A new take for me. :) I'm about in the middle of the book right now and I have to say I'm finding it a lovely summer read. A bit controversial but that's just what my mother doesn't want...

  • loll thats exactly my viewpoint. Id expected her more chunky and living in her own perfect bubble.

I'm also halfway through the book but wondered how humbert would be portrayed in the film and i must say he does the description justice

  • damn that dog can jump and chase a car at the same time

  • That what a Jack Russel Terrier can do. I know from experience that my Jack Russel can jump really high.

  • ah, i've seen the older original version of this movie and thought it was very beatiful; along with the book even though it was a sketchy topic i was more then happy to read about it, saying as it's not something you would truly find writen about then...now-a-days it's a totally different story though, but never writen quite as lovely as Nabakov <3

  • 4 months later she died of typhus...

I know its fucked up but you gotta admit that was funny.

  • i sort of laughed at that part in the book too. I think in the book it was a lot more humorous. XD

  • 0:31

How do you drink it like that?

  • I LOVE BAILEY COX

  • If I was in Charlotte's shoes I'd probably be talking like this to him:

    "Aggh...bwugh..sooo...yeah....heeeee...Soo!. *squee* Uhm....ILOVEYOUYOURHOT!!!*SWOON*

  • Dude she did not look 14.

  • THE REAL GIRL IN THE MOVIE WAS 14
