I'm not pro-bum, but I do think nobody should have to die even if the only reason they are poor and starving is because of a life of stubbornly refusing to work. The person still needs the bare necessities, perhaps along with some counseling sessions. A person who has nothing at all can not get up the strength and energy to change their life even if they have seen the errors of their past ways and are willing to change and start anew.

The irony of communism is their elites took much the same attitude many business elites in the US take that if you didn't work you shouldn't eat. Lenin himself said something to that effect.

That's why extremes do not work. Try to abolish capitalism and you'll just have Communist Party elites doing the same old things and causing the same old problems.

What is needed is some moderation. We should recognize that the US has become too capitalist, but instead of tossing it out we need a better...

For example, if I say we should cut our fingers off, and someone says we shouldn't, you wouldn't suggest cutting off half a finger. It's a logical fallacy called an "Appeal to Moderation". I think you need to look into the history of the USSR & co. because it really isn't as simple as "Party Elites doing the same old things". There were reasons for what they did, and why they could, and it's not "Human Nature".

You are missing the point. The example you gave is not "moderating" between "extremes", your example is an example of extremism in forging a balanced compromise.

Moderation is something that is itself hard to put into words. But in this case, consider if the government has total control, the people in it will naturally be biased to make decisions that favor themselves. This can not be resisted by idealized altruism. These biases operate subconsciously and the rulers continue

Radical direct democracy is irresponsible. Some ability for the people to pass initiatives, and recall elected officials is sometimes appropriate. But the amount of "democracy"(used in your sense) that you are referring to creates a society where the common opinion prevails even in the prejudices of the moment. That's why the Soviet Union failed to remain based on soviet democracy. The Bolsheviks(means majority) were popular enough to twist support for "democracy" to meaning

However, I do not take an idealistic stance on this like Capitalists do. The reason Socialism wasn't achieved is, like previously stated, that Feudal Russia was backwards. It did, on the other had, show that a planned economy can do a lot of good things, although lack of I.T. made it hard to plan for consumer goods.

Capitalism is not in and of itself idealist. It can just mean a generally free market economy. When "Capitalism" is turned into an ideology one is devoted to then that is idealist.

Having no government control is irresponsible. Putting everything under government control is just as irresponsible.

Everything that occurs has some impact or influence on events, and communism, even if executed faultily ( and far from true marxism) did very much help in the development or russia, even if it costed millions of life.
