This was the first version of Jane Eyre I ever saw, after my first reading the book. This version holds a place in my heart and none of the remakes compare. Plus I have been a big Ciaran Hinds fan since first seeing this movie, he displays such pasion in his movies, you feel what he feels and believe it.
Overall, in my opinion, Ciaran Hinds just isn't suited to the role of Rochester. As I commented elsewhere on this site, Charlotte Bronte depicted Rochester as an intensely passionate man who's become harsh as a result of painful life experience but Hinds takes this to an extreme. His Rochester is so emotionally volatile that there are moments when he crosses the line into viciousness and violence. One advantage he does have over some other Rochesters is that he's able to shed tears.
i wish i knew if the people of that generation really spoke their feeling so true like that, so expressive and to the point. now-a-days, relationships are based on lies and you have no idea who the person is who is courting you. to me, it's like entrapment. they lure you with false imagies and tones of themselves.
@angel2rx -- As much as I hate to point this out, Mr. Rochester's initial relationship with Jane was based on lies and Jane didn't know him nearly as much as she thought she did because he withheld so much from her. Actually, in my opinion, Mr. Rochester didn't truly love Jane when he first asked her to marry him because he was focused on what was best for him and not what would be best for her. There is irony in the fact that he would've done to her what others had done to him.
@angel2rx -- Please don't get me wrong...I actually think Mr. Rochester means well, has stronger feelings for her than he has ever had for anyone, and genuinely *believes* that he loves her. However, I think he -- like so many people, unfortunately -- was never (or hardly ever) shown what healthy love really looks like. In the novel, the way in which Rochester describes his father and elder brother suggests that they cared for nothing but money.
@OreadNYC: sounds like he thinks of her as a precious possion or she has opened his eyes to his stupidity, self love and ignorance towards worldly possions. she says it like it is and no one has ever done that to him, or at least thats what am getting from the movie. i haven't had the pleasure of reading this book yet.
Just watched it on tv - I saw it when it first came out, but then the version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens took precedence. This is really powerful and Ciaran Hinds is much more as I imagined him when I first read the book when I was 12! Thanks for posting! :)
Ugh don't like this at all! I loved Ciaran Hinds in Persuasion but I think he just gets the character of Mr Rochester wrong here. Plus his hair and moustache are horrible! Samantha Morton is better but the script does not serve her well.
This is definitely not "the definitive" Jane Eyre - and the characters definitely stray from Bronte's - Jane is much too forward and Rochester is downright scary and near abusive at times...but I have to say, it is one of my favorite versions. I liked it so much on Youtube that I bought the DVD. :D It's more of an "interpretation" than a faithful adaptation. Samantha Morton is adorable as Jane-- definitely a unique version with interesting new lines "you are not your wounds.." love that! :D
This was the first version I ever saw of Jane Eyre, the version that introduced me to such a wonderful piece of literature as a little girl, and for that it will remain my favourite.
This version is probably my favorite as well. Though I wish it hadn't been shortened as much as it was, Morton and Hinds excel in their respective roles. More is said by one of their expressions than in lines of dialog. Thank you for posting this. I loved it when I discovered it playing on the Ovation channel and I'm thrilled to see it posted here as well.
Lovely ending & movie! A lot was cut off, of course, but nothing too crucial like in 1996 film that was painful to watch - now they focused on the relationship of J & R almost enough. Jane was marvelous (Morton & Wilson have both been excellent choices). Mr. Rochester wasn’t too gorgeous – a good thing. I’m a fan of Hinds. (But Dalton and Stephens were really great as well. Those 3 are so different that it’s hard to compare, unnecessary too). I’d give this 8 out of 10 ^^ Thanks for uploading!
It was interesting to see the choice here for St.John-- he's good-looking, honorable, charming--- and very tempting. Other actors in the role make it easy for Jane to reject his proposal. The sister is good too- not prissy as usually portrayed.
In this version, you see how she wakes up to the deep passionate love and rare true friendship she rejected-- and she goes back not knowing his wife is dead. She was willing to be his mistress.
@RushTheSilver Thank u so much for this version.Must admit I enjoyed it very much.If moved me so much emotionally dat I was crying through it.I too have been watching the different versions & comparing them.I found that each & every Jane Eyre adaptation have their own special captivating plots, whether through change of actors, dialogue or surrounding scenes. If one was to compare to the book then one will be disappointed so I did not !!! I watched and appreciated each their own originality.
Thanx for posting!!! This is now my second favourite!!! And what a treat after enduring the 1996 version...Sam Morton is Jane with a mind of her own! Loved it!
@HermioneNo1 I am glad that you liked it! There are few people who have enjoyed this version, or given it the credit it deserves, but I sincerely applaud the few in the crowd who are genuinely appreciative of a well-made feature.
@RushTheSilver ~ This version was my all time favourite. Until I saw Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson playing the roles of Jane and Rochester... But I must say that Samantha and Ciaran are really a very close second also loved Ciaran in Persuasion, as Captain Wentworth and Samantha as Harriet Smith along side Kate Beckinsale as EMMA.
Thanks again for sharing this version of Jane Eyre with all the Bronte fans here in you-tube-land ... :0)X
@RushTheSilver I have never preferred any version to this one, it's definitely the best by a long way. The acting is absolutely superb, every other version pales in comparison :)
@HermioneNo1 Have you seen the 1973 version with Michael Jayston? If you haven't... you are in for a treat. He is ROCHESTER to the core! Thanks RushTheSilver for posting this version. It was the first I saw ever but I do have to say I love the 1973 version of them all.
@LordDracsWife Oh YES! Michael Jayston is my second favourite Rochester, might be number one but for Sorcha Cusack, who is unbearable to me and so Michael is brilliantly acting to a blind mirror...
I've seen all version but the new film (not too looking forward to it, but will check it out of course)
@HermioneNo1 I do agree with you on the fact that Sorcha Cusack was not the best choice as in some parts I was disappointed with her role... BUT for the love of Michael Jayston... I think he made the 1973 version come alive. I don't know exactly what it is, but there is something about his facial expressions that I love and his sideburns, not to mention his full-head of hair. These days men shave their heads... most of what I've seen and I think it is rather distasteful.
This is one of my absolutely favourite versions. Ciaran Hinds is wonderful. I think the only drawback, is not so much that they cut out bits of the plot (needed in such a short movie) but that they change things too fully, like Rochester's warm feelings for Adele
I love this version. I loved Ciran in Persuasion and the Rome series. I just hate the 1970's porn star mustache! Perhaps it was the look in that time period.
@RushTheSilver, thak you so very much for posting all of this version of Jane Eyre... I must admit that I loved this one the best until I saw Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson...But Samatha Morton and Ciaran Hinda are definitely a VERY close 2nd... *swoons*
Mind you, I love watching all the different versions I can find, to compare and enjoy each one, each 'Jane' and 'Rochester' it seems bring alittle something different to their version and I love to watch 'em all...
I love all of the Jane Eyre movies but this by far is my favorite. Jane's awkwardness and innocence and Edward's harshness and forwardness made the movie a delight. Love the ending!
Hmmm..I love all versions of Jane Eyre...thanks for posting!
