I have always noticed in many videos that the elephants seemed a bit bored, as if they have no real stimulation provided for them. Did they receive enrichment objects and toys on a regular basis? (just wondering)
@awesomeH2O The elephants were given enrichment items daily. Part of their morning routine included a search for some of their favorite foods the keepers hid in various places throughout the exhibit.
In addition, they had regular exercise routines, daily baths, and even pedicures.
Elephants in the wild often stand still for a while. I don't think that means they are bored. Possibly they are just relaxing, or maybe even thinking.
@ZooVisitorMM True. Maybe the cold weather took a bit of time getting used to. After all, it was winter. And true, elephants do think a lot. Bette was known as the "thinker" of the herd, Kallie was the "chowhound," Dulary was the "chatterbox," and Petal, the fine matriarch, was dignified.
@awesomeH2O It seemed like she was a bit moody. I only witnessed it once (I actually recorded a video of it, but haven't uploaded it.)
It appeared to me on that occasion that she wanted the Asian rhino to come close to the fence so she could scratch its ears, but the rhino was on the other side communicating with the okapi.
Of course, I could be way off on that. But she kept looking at the rhino and hurtling sticks and trumpeting.
@ZooVisitorMM Wow...I did not know that about Kallie. Kallie always seemed to be the relaxed, calm, laid-back sort of individual who likes attention from other elephants (and the rhinoceros!).
@awesomeH2O if only we could know what they were thinking...I think in many ways they are alike us.

@awesomeH2O Kallie was also very temperamental. It was fascinating when she threw a fit (and sometimes, sticks and stones, too!)

@ZooVisitorMM Yes, elephants are truly individuals. Wow...I had no idea Kallie was that way...what would she throw a fit over?
