Ive noticed that when many young people get into a work setting and are not treated with fawning false praise that they have become conditioned to expect they feel that the people "aren't nice" or are hostile. My current generation (early 20's), younger ones as well, are in for a real shock when they get out into the real world. Its false accolades like these that do more harm than good.
I like your opinions and mostly agree that behaviors have become outrageous and unacceptable in general, however I have to disagree with your view that it is the administrators fault that kids behave badly, when the very parents of these kids are present in the auditorium. Calling the kids out will result in chaos because parents always blame everyone else instead of doing what is right to raise their kids. How do you imagine these kids learned to behave badly in the first place?
@tmotofga Agreed, but again OH the OUTRAGE of the parents at depriving their children. Their parents are the ones that need to stand up since their failure to in the past has led to the behavior in the present.
i work in the school system and it's so hard...ignorance is rampant when it's an innercity population that you're teaching/mentoring. i have witnessed everything you spoke of and it does make you angry. if i have kids, i'm home schooling or placing them in private schools. i will not place them in the public school system because the agenda is to purposely dumb them down by celebrating mediocrity. i can't tell you the number of parents who have tried to fight me because i had expectations.
@iroc31407 Brilliant posting, it's too bad more people can't face the truth. It has nothing to do with race honestly, it has to do with economic status and the expectations of children by their parents, and the enforcement of the same. I feel public schools ALL should be abolished and replaced by private schools, with vouchers provided to parents which both give them choice, and hold them to a standard of responsibility to their children to get involved.
I would never put my kids in a private school. I want my kids to succed socially, as well as academically. I don't want my kids being called "Nerd" or "Preppy" or Sellout
@getoffmyshnawzz Seriously, are you saying that you would rather hold your children back from achieving everything they are capable of because you are concerned about what others who can or will not do it will think or say about them? Are you suggesting that their peers in private school are somehow not acceptable socially? I highly disagree with that and it's not fair to your children.
@getoffmyshnawzz this comment is disturbing and there obviously wasn't much thought put into it. #1. you can be a social butterfly in a private school, OTHER KIDS GO THERE TOO. #2. You may not be able to see this because you are probably still in high school, but nobody calls names like that after graduation. Nobody cares, its irrelevant... But you seem to care more about what others think of your child than their success in life.
Your comment highlights your imbecility in ways you can't comprehend. Key also is that by your own hand you stated, "My mom", not my patents. It's obvious there was no father present for you lack the simplest of common civility. Have a good life child.
I don't find anything wrong with people being overly excited because their children graduated.....there are a lot who don't make it. Don't sweat the little things. Be more concerned to the drop out rate and the parents who will never see that day.
The basis of participation awards are that they are meant to encourage the B/C students (the majority) not to give up and aim for that glamorized "hood life" that has become so popular. It says that you may not be on top, but we respect your effort and your tenacity and armed with that tenacity you can still have a place in a healthy, productive society. The "old school" method of using failure to motivate won't work with many of the students because floundering in failure has become the norm.
I disagree. The old school method worked for all of my kids. When they failed, they got help. Why? Because as a parent, we were involved. That is why the "Old School Method" as you put it stopped working. Sorry Ass Parents.
@tmotofga I was actually looking at the situation from the POV of the schools who use participation awards. I took the parent variable out because there are many students who strive in spite of trifling parents (my brother and I included, so that's 2 for 2 in the same household so it can't be that uncommon). I think that I have a different perspective as a 22 year old w/ a 3.8 GPA who watched determined peers struggle. Their participation awards never irritated me or took away from my "shine".
@tmotofga Start a School for Children in the Ghetto, Pick out the Individual Leaders (Nucleus of the Childrens Social Groups) ie Natural Leaders , If you effect the Nucleus of Social Groups (The metaphorical Eyewall of the Hurricane) In a positive and effective manner, the Rest of your Children and Race will Follow, Think of the Children that become Natural Leaders (BULLIES AND POPULAR ONES) as the Nucleus of an Atom, Make a Positive Impact to them and the Rest will Follow
That's strange that in my area the private schools have middle and high school graduations and public schools just have high school graduation.I go to private school.I think public schooling should have more balanced between the students, discipline better etc...
Our society believes that children should be awarded for every little thing that they do. I teach and I throughly understand your feelings but not all teachers do a bad job. I am a black teacher who has given 15 years in the public school system teaching our children. I have worked along aside other teachers who have given their time and expertise in trying to change wrongs in our society. It takes everyone to make the change.P.S. I can't stand those ghetto graduations also!
Well Brotha it just goes to show you how this society have gone to "Hell In A Hand Basket" especially the public fool(school) system. @Trill5therfif and Jwriter04-Truer statements couldn't have been made that sums it up!! Peace Out.
His anger is justified but his basic premis is wrong. It isn't public schools - it's black people. The very best thing that could happen for black people would be to seperate from white civilization. Many countries have been successfully partitioned in the past. We could do that fairly here and black people could create their own civilization and fulfill their own destinies.
If young blacks do not begin to care about getting an education, there will be no change. Stop dropping out to become drug-dealers and rappers and start showing some interest in the world around you. If this is not done soon, blacks in America will lose everything they fought for in the past.
Mr. Tmot I've recently discovered your series of videos today. while agreeing with the majority of them i totally disagree with you on this one. personally when my name was called and i start to walk across the stage know that all my family and friends were standing and cheering for me gave me a warm feeling that i remember to this day. and when my son walks across the stage he's going to know that i'm there and i'm proud!
We need better funding for inner city schools. The poor deserve what the better suburban schools have. I think that a new law could help. If a rich school has a fundraiser, the state could send an auditor to track how much is raised. The state would take say 35% of the total amount raised at the fundraiser and distribute it to underserved inner city schools.
Wrong! I've toured worldwide. There are poorer nations with more academically inclined students & notable progress than the Americans. Most of these schools don't own computers or updated books. How do they get by? Listening- period!
U.S. parents suck today, It's irrelevant being a single parent or own multiple kids. If parents weren't educated, the children will relatively fail. The majority of underprivileged parents are black, that's why your kids fail.
You do understand that inner city schools get more funding from the state than Suburban schools right? Why take the money given to a school by hardworking people and give it to a school where the parents refuse to participate? This is just what he was saying why should they be awarded for doing nothing? To start fixing the problem start asking where is the money going? Parents need to be involved in a childs life, teachers take control of the class schools will improve.
@csincali I went to school in the ghetto and in a rich surburb. The inner city schools get "more" funding from the state because the surburban schools gets plenty of funding from property taxes because the houses are so expensive, were the area I grew up the houses are worth next to nothing.Example the house I was raised cost 15k and mine was one of many cheap houses. Not only that but the money per student allocated per student is and always will be more than that of inner city schools.
This video had me laughing pretty hard. You painted the most accurate picture of graduation, for sure. Especially at 3:25! Mario! Yeah, schools are in bad shape these days. Home schooling might be a better alternative!
Thank you bro T. I watch your videos and they are on the money and truthful. I'm shocked the Neo-Negroes are froaming at the mouth and bad mouthing you with venom and hate for telling it as it is. Not much you can do about these self marginalized coons. Sorry, but I had to say it. The majority of black people agree with you for addressing the dysfunctional victimization and entitlement coon culture. Unfortunately, this ignorant loud minority wants to represent all "black people". THEY DON'T!
Many of our children's friends have been a little shocked that my husband and I are the original parents! Can't plan a decent party sometimes because some friends are visiting the Dad or Mom, you know. At 8th grade graduation they got diplomas that said they had "successfully participated". All the kids said the same. My kids passed and excelled and that's what they get! Folks don't yell and shout much here, just a bit. We bring flowers for the girls and take tons of pictures. Blessings.
I agree in part that we have incapapable or inadequate teachers. Although we have to accept that bad parents play a larger part than bad teachers. Many childrens behaviour is shaped before they even get to school. Teachers are fighting a losing battle against poor role models
Wow! Participation certificates. This is ridiculous because that tells the children that they don't need to work hard in school anymore. That is a slap in the face for students like me, who bust their butts to maintain straight A's. The public school system should be ashamed for allowing this to happen. Thank you for posting this video!
@NasharaLaunyiah1992 busting your buttocks off won't get you straight A's. i'm sorry to tell this to you bluntly but the reality is school is not only a popularity contest for students, but teachers as well. teachers are humans and are often times prejudice against any race, black, white, hispanic, asian etc. you can write a story and someone else does and that guy has a better grade because his story is more in the teacher's genre.
my mom is brazilian and doesnt know how to read or write, i wasnt ever really encouraged to learn bc Im a girl. and she got more attention than me when i graduated from high school. she wore bright clothing and screamed at the top of her lungs too. i realized that she needed the spotlight that day...and on the day my brother graduated from college. i hope she doesnt go to my college graduation.
The Administrators should say that everyone, regardless of color should hold their applause and cheering until all names of the graduates have been called and deny the diploma from anyone violating these rules or kicked out of the ceremony.
I feel you on this...we, and by we, I mean America as a whole, have definitely lowered our expectations. My niece is graduating this year w/o a baby and my sister says that everyone is so impressed that she didn't drop out or have a baby in high school. *sigh* , so sad!
When I was going to school, there was NO celebration or graduation UNTIL the end of 12th grade, as long as one met all the requirements to graduate.
Back then, we all did graduation rehearsal and God help the kid who acted a fool during the ceremony! When I graduated, we were given the padded holder with the school name on it. The diploma came later. That way they could withhold my diploma if I acted up.
This business of "graduation" for kindergarten, 6th grade, 9th grade, etc. has to stop.
ITA. The graduation song is called "Pomp and Circumstance" because it's to be a formal, important occasion. I address my kids' teachers and Mr., Mrs. or Miss and I deserve the same formallity.
i graduated n may of 08 from jack yates high which is located n 3rd ward n houston,tx. n yea when the ceremony was goin on there were alot of my classmates' relatives n the stands hollerin n shoutin.its expected because thats just how people act around there n if u tell them 2 quiet down they get upset n mad
I know that's how they act. It has not always been that way. The good ole days are done unless more like me try and reinstill pride and dignity into the young. I am a part of the last Black generation that knew what it was for people to be married for life, kids to not drop out of school, shame in kids out of wedlock and the list goes on. Peace.
It is a milestone in the life of a child. One that should have meaning, be memorable and reverenced.
It should not be heralded as a side show and cheapened with worthless certificates to make non achievers feel better about themselves as opposed to helping them Achieve more by reaching inside to their full potential.
yes, just like some of these educators want to pay for good grades(cnn black in america)i wouldnt pay a kid for shit.his payment is basic education with which to parlay to something else.
this is so true , i feel that everything you say is true and this it affects me being a young black student as teachers persume all "Parents " of a certain nature (i wont mention race) are like that single parent loud mouthed ignorant people who make a mockery of what is meant to be a dignifed ceremony.
Great video! I couldn't have said it better myself. Everything starts at home with the parents. Parents these days are so quick to point the finger at someone else for their kids failures when all they have to do is look in the mirror. Our ancestors worked extra hard to make life easier for us so we wouldn't have to struggle like they did. Now days kids expect everything handed to them instead of working hard for it. Keep the vids coming!
I read an article a few years ago saying that teachers are literally afraid of the parents. Parents barge into classrooms, complain about grades their children are given, and call teachers names. One teacher who was interviewed said he one time called a girl's father regarding behavioral problems;the girls'father called him a total jerk. Do you think some of those parents may have been present at the graduation you were talking about?
I would like to think so. But my issue is the behavior at the ceremony. I also take issue at the fact the the teachers and administrators have become complicit with the system in not providing an environment conducive to learning. Expell the bad ass kids so that others can learn. Remove the unruly from the ceremonies. Reward those who deserve it for something truly achived by effort, like graduation and receiveing high marks. Stop the madness of rewarding just for showing up.
Its a bad combination when you have teachers, and parents who dont care. There are alot of parents who dont care, i see it all the time.. They dont even give a hell where there teenage kids are at night, let alone if they did there homework.. Things sure have changed since i was comin up.. Good video..
Oh, thats a screenshot from a movie i uploaded, it automatically set my pic to that and ive been too lazy to change it.
So like i was asking, ive watched like all your videos for a while now, i noticed it specifies that its for black people, am i ok to watch this or is it just weird?
Actually, anyone can benefit from positive advice. My target audience is may be black, but anyone is welcome to listen. I appreciate that you have even taking the time to listen and comment. Thanks.
I think they just have to keep it down to applause I remember when I graduated from High school and everyone got cheers except me I heard sister shouting but that was it and she was pretty much over talked by the silence I felt bad .
and now the military tells them they don't have to graduate from high school just be able to carry a gun and shoot people it is time to wake up and take our children back and teach them what we learned respect for life.
Please be safe driving while kicking the truth. I think the fundamental responsiblity lies in the hands of the parents. The school officials are able to fail our kids because we enable them to do so. We don't take a vested interest in the welfare of our students. It is hard to expect teachers to care when the parent of the child doesn't care, then multiply that by the number of students that teacher is responsible for. However that doesn't take the responsibility from the teacher.
and you have every reason in the WORLD to be pissed. my niece and nephew are in elementary school and the things that go on with their TEACHERS is down right scary! my baby is 3 and her private school fund starts on her 4th birthday. it's shameful but it is so necessary.
true true , it was like that at my graduation.. i had to take a step above just a regular diploma so i got Tennessee Scholars to go along with the diploma.. me and a bunch of others.. a high school diploma is just a certificate of participation now
Peace 4 ever brother & you indeed do sound pissed. Being pissed making a video while driving is that safe ( smile ) Last year I attended the graduation of my niece & experienced the exact same things you describe. It really wasn't a shock to me as you can use YouTube for an example. Just because men & women are physically mature doesn't mean they are that mentally, this is why in many cases you get all of these silly comments or immature words of anger. Remember some were raised by kids, now grown

Peace.

wow dude you should not let it piss you off that much it aint even that serious. But on another note good video.
leous666 2 years ago
Actually, it is.
It is a milestone in the life of a child. One that should have meaning, be memorable and reverenced.
It should not be heralded as a side show and cheapened with worthless certificates to make non achievers feel better about themselves as opposed to helping them Achieve more by reaching inside to their full potential.
Yes, it is that serious.

yes, just like some of these educators want to pay for good grades(cnn black in america)i wouldnt pay a kid for shit.his payment is basic education with which to parlay to something else.

this is so true , i feel that everything you say is true and this it affects me being a young black student as teachers persume all "Parents " of a certain nature (i wont mention race) are like that single parent loud mouthed ignorant people who make a mockery of what is meant to be a dignifed ceremony.

I'm curious. Why do you bother listening to my videos? We obviously don't agree.
Acting a fool at graduation only "positively"
reinforces acting a fool.
There are some things in life that you do because it is the right thing to do and it deserves no reward. Driving the speed limit is one example.
Perfect attendance is one thing. Just coming to class is another and should not be acknowledged as an achievement.
Kids should show up because it is for THEIR benefit.

Only reward those who work hard and succeed. Because those are the only one's who get rewarded in life.

It's called positive reinforcement. It actually works for a lot of people

I read an article a few years ago saying that teachers are literally afraid of the parents. Parents barge into classrooms, complain about grades their children are given, and call teachers names. One teacher who was interviewed said he one time called a girl's father regarding behavioral problems;the girls'father called him a total jerk. Do you think some of those parents may have been present at the graduation you were talking about?
revacohen 3 years ago

Even though this is supposed to be only for black people, i enjoyed it.
Is this wrong?

If you are not black, why is your profile that of a brother with a mouth full of gold? Just curious.

Oh, thats a screenshot from a movie i uploaded, it automatically set my pic to that and ive been too lazy to change it.
So like i was asking, ive watched like all your videos for a while now, i noticed it specifies that its for black people, am i ok to watch this or is it just weird?
darkwestern 3 years ago
Actually, anyone can benefit from positive advice. My target audience is may be black, but anyone is welcome to listen. I appreciate that you have even taking the time to listen and comment. Thanks.

I think they just have to keep it down to applause I remember when I graduated from High school and everyone got cheers except me I heard sister shouting but that was it and she was pretty much over talked by the silence I felt bad .

However that doesn't take the responsibility from the teacher.

and you have every reason in the WORLD to be pissed. my niece and nephew are in elementary school and the things that go on with their TEACHERS is down right scary! my baby is 3 and her private school fund starts on her 4th birthday. it's shameful but it is so necessary.
missteek08 3 years ago 3
true true , it was like that at my graduation.. i had to take a step above just a regular diploma so i got Tennessee Scholars to go along with the diploma.. me and a bunch of others.. a high school diploma is just a certificate of participation now
