Divine song. Of course, there is little truthfulness in the film--Porter's gayness could not be mentioned at that time, of course. When Porter saw the final film he LOVED it---which will tell u that the man loved a fairy tale--especially one of himself. The whole shooting was a nightmare for all concerned--Grant's OCD went haywire regarding the set. BUT what counts is always what's on film, right? It's an enjoyable, tune filled bio (I got to sing in a 46 song revue of P.'s life in Santa Fe)
@ZelphKinderhook Your thoughts on this matter aren't valid. There's no doubt you engage in deviant behavior and should refrain from public discourse of any kind. With every word you spew filth and venom, which is a symptom of an unclean spirit. Continue on this path and you'll suffer the same fate as all those before you throughout history.
@RickChalek And that's important... why? Your outing a dead celebrity serves the reader no benefit. Or maybe your purpose isn't to benefit anyone but only to spread the suggestion of sodomy through any means. Either way your unnecessary comment has now been identified as such.
"outing a dead celebrity"... Oh, puh-lease! It's been long known that Cole Porter was gay. Get over it!
"serves the reader no benefit"... Really? There's the distinct benefit of recognizing the contributions of LGBT's (lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender).
"spread the suggestion of sodomy through any means"... Why do YOU care what anyone does in their own bed?
YOUR unnecessary comment has now been identified as such. You're also ridiculous and pathetic.
Not a shred of truth in this version of the Cole Porter story, but the music is always great, and if you don't love Cary Grant, Castro will stand you up against a wall and have you shot with no blindfold. The Kevin Kline movie, Delovely is far better, but the music is always a constant because it's PORTER, that's why. He was the greatest. Imagine what a songwriting team Cole Porter and Jimmy Van Heusen could have been!

@RickChalek Ha, ha--thanks for the wit!! I was in a 46 song revue of Porter here in Santa Fe this summer. Musicals are a lot of work and this one was no different--but real achievement--I got to sing "You Don't Know Paris", "From this Moment On' "At Long Last Love" among others with a cast of 13.
I'm sorry hetrosexual America, but our big wonderful creative, Cole was a big old fag! Lets stop the revesionist history and accept the wonderful man for what he was, a homosexual. He was not interested in women sexually. Never was never will be!
the greatest rendition was the one sung by francis sinatra when he broke from the big band era and went solo, what a ballad arrangement by axel stardahl
The real story shown in the later version called "De Lovely" was that Porter was homosexual and the wife knew and tolerated it because she actually loved him. Oddly enough, Grant was bi-sexual and supposedly had a long affair with he-man actor Randolph Scott. The studios of course hushed it up. Today it would be all over the media.
@RImusclebear - Wow, I'd forgotten I even commented on this great film. My point really was about the more accurate Kevin Klein version of Cole Porter's life in the movie entitled "De Lovely". I agree, in the world of the arts, a high percentage of the artists are either gay or bi-sexual. I consider their contributions to our society as GIFTS to everyone.
@Videobarbs You're on the money! Take away gay artists & 1/2 of popular song, dance, movies etc wouldn't exist. So I hope those Rep.'s r sitting up & taking notice of immortal fact!! Grant version of P.'s life was pure fantasy--but enjoyably so. Of course it could not mention that P. was gay in '45. The Kline version was good--if somewhat disjointed--& Kline didn't look remotely like Porter. I also thought it would go further with the sexual thing--ie Porter in bed w a man.
@Videobarbs An actor's career could be over if the studios knew they were gay in the 40's. Various 'beards' were invented for actors the studios worried about. As you noted, Linda and Cole were genuinely in love with one another--something between siblings and marital love without the sex. Plus having a wife, of course, protected him from slander. He had his flings and she was aware of them And, of course, he is American's greatest song composer.
This is truly the one and most beautiful version of the song. Never ever it was sung so perfect, so outstanding. This is one forgotten diamant in the hollywood hyistory of the last 70 years
I DVRed this when it came on the other day on TCM, but it cut off the last 8 minutes. What happened between when he was listening to Begin the Beguine in his hospital bed to this part? Anything important?
beautiful!!

One of Cole Porter's best ever songs. Truly beautifully cleaver lyrics and the melody is just totally sublime.

@Videobarbs So what! And you expect a creative man to be straight? Few and far between!

There is a scene where Cole and Monte Wooley take the train back up to Yale so that Cole Porter can win an award and perform with the glee club.
