Why do really pro VF players choose outfits that look like total clown suits?I mean, seriously- Paris Hilton with earmuffs and homeless karate-punk with bright blue hair?
Because looking cool, while you are already a badass will make you seem boastful. The general rule of being cool here is to not try look cool. Rather, look as ridiculous as possible so you can seem humble, which is pretty cool.
...if only the popularity of "button mashing" that is seen in every other fighting game was in VF...sweet lord it would be a travesty of how fast itd be shipped over to the US

Since I never went to Japan, this is a wild guess:
People probably didn't buy the game because VF is pretty much a niche franchise not made for everyone, as a game you'd rather play from time to time and not really a game you need to own, but the credit-spending and huge number of matches disagree. A lot of players could've probably bought their own Lindbergh, VF5R and a VF terminal for all we know.
Also Sega seems to be pulling back from some of their titles for PS3 like both Yakuza games besides VF5R. Mainly only focusing on Sonic games and publishing others (Resonance of Fate) and focusing on Wii/DS.PSP more

Says Who My Friend? there was a scene but the gathering closed down a few years back. Some of the Strongest other than Japan hail from New York. Now we just play online because acades in NY are extinct.

Also bring Yakuza 3.

At E309, I thought Sega's "big announcement" would be a console port of VF5R.
When I saw that it was yet another Mario Kart ripoff from a 3rd party company in the past year, I shed a tear.
