Very nice...I was assigned to the 67th for most of the two years I was at Ellsworth but I did pull one 3 day tour at Delta because my roomate was sick so we swapped tours. It was nice seeing the old site again...thank you so much for posting this...
I am a tour guide of a similar Missile Alert Facility in North Dakota. The purpose of the sites was terrifying but the history is really fun to learn. The most interesting part though is the fact that of the six missile wings built, three are still active in Montana, Whyoming, and North Dakota.
That was cute! I grew up in the 1980s in paralyzing FEAR of a general nuclear exchange with the Soviets. I used to lay in bed at night and my imagination would run wild. I would think I heard Civil Defense sirens going off in the distance, or overtime a plane flew over I'd look to see if it was a bomber. Funny, I rejoiced when the Cold War ended, but looking back on it, those bombs were in safer hands than they are now.
Minuteman ICBMs are still in service. I was a missile tech from 1974 - 1978 at Whiteman AFB
