  • That microwave never saw this coming.

  • @DCarnold84 laughed for ages at this comment!

  • Great great fiddle playing and guitar,I like the pretty stuff too,but this is the real thing

  • Absolutely unreal. wow.

  • That is some of the best fiddling I've ever heard. Does anyone know the name of the tunes?

  • @boxtubejohn Tom Ward's Downfall & Charlie Lennon's no. 4

  • Wow!!! This is awesome. I first saw this when it was broadcast on TV years ago, when I first started learning the fiddle and have been trying to find it ever since. Tonight I came across you posting which has ended my 20 year search for this! Blistering playing, absolute genius. His style is wonderful! Thank you so much :)

  • Cathal are you single? Im available

I could listen to that music night and day.

  • this video seriously makes me well up - I wish I knew what this music does to my brain

  • some drive in that stuff..mc glynn's the man!

  • electric stuff! what a class act!

  • Pls convert it again and this time better and upload it again. Love it <3

  • I haven't been able to convert vids for a while so it looks like this is not going to be possible any time soon :-(

    Iain

  • the sound quality enhances the video for me, makes it more raw sounding I think - :)

  • thanks for that unusual take on the "problem" :-)

  • I've just seen Cathal play these tunes at the start of his set this evening at An Droichead (in Belfast). He played them better, probably even faster, and with more variations (and the sound was good too). Then he played some spellbinding reels and jigs on the banjo - again with lots of variations, almost like jazz. PJ MacDonald, Mairtin O'Connor and Donal Lunny were onstage with him too - all excellent, just as one would expect. It was a mighty evening ...

  • my mind is blown by this video!! thanks UISTMAN59!!!!!!!!! xx

  • great fiddle playing, and Arty great guitar player, the only man

  • Brilliant tune! Had to post again.

  • Even with the shitty sound quality it's awesome! Thank you.

  • Wow! Phenomenal!!

    Thanks for posting.

  • Is this program availible anywhere in full length?- Tanx for posting pure gold!!! :)

  • can't remember seeing it anywhere else I'm afraid. It ought to have been released as a video though. It was a fine programme.

  • @UISTMAN5I could be wrong, but I think that the video was part of a great series on Irish music called "Bringing It All Back Home" from the 1990's9

  • wow! Amazing duet! bravo!

  • first tune is tom wards downfall i think

  • thanks for the info

  • have listened far more than 20 times - still struggling but......in a few weeks....gonna try and play both fiddle tunes...record them...post them...commited now I guess !

  • Looking forward to hearing that :-)

  • that video was filmed 15-20 years ago for a show called rythms of the world in Derrytresk co. Tyrone.

  • the second tune is charlie lennon's no. 4 and what a tune it is! i've listened to this vid about 20 times just to get the notes down on fiddle...mental stuff!

  • What program did this video come from? It's fantastic, would like to get a high quality audio copy of this one. Thanks for sharing!!!

  • yup- great fiddler -fast and precise with great ornamentation/ improvisation- Have hunted for the name of the two pieces no luck - any ideas ? Also possibly its slightly sped up - half a tone higher than norm and sounds a tiny bit high frequency . Spect he can play it fastr in real life though !

  • Nah, It's not sped up. Cathal has his fiddle tuned up by a semitone, and Arty has a capo on the first fret.

Cathal really does play that fast ;) Would love to know the name of the first tune, it's a belter

  • Comment removed

  • i wud rate him as 1 of da best fiddlers in ireland..duz any1 no the name of dat tune.?

  • unbelivable fiddle...duz any1 no da name of dat tune??

  • Thanks, I wish the sound quality was better though !

  • First time a reel has moved me to tears...

A slow air, yes, but a reel? Nope, never happend before.

The brilliance and energy of this piece is simply breathtaking.

I can't stop watching this video

  • genius.........guitar by arty mcglynn class

  • the best ever!

  • Can you tell me the names of these tunes by chance and who wrote them would love to record them !!

  • Sorry dicker1981 :-(

I'm no further forward than I was last year when I said I wasn't a great expert on Irish tunes. I thought that the second one might be 'The Longford Collector' or a variation of it but I just don't know.

  • 1st is Tom wards downfall, 2nd. Charlie Lennons no.4 (composed by Charlie Lennon)

  • Thanks bruceleeC64 . Much appreciated as I have been wondering about this for a long time :-)

  • no problem you're welcome

  • jolly good !

the fiddler is great but i'd like to learn more about the guitar playing. is there any way ? books ? website ?

  • actually youtube has a lot of starter videos for playing guitar if u own one. i hear guitar for dummies is very simple and easy to learn by also. i learned a lot of songs off here, once u get the basics off the learner vids.

  • THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!! i love the sound of the fiddle and y'all jus made my love grow sooo much!!!

  • Greatest kitchen music ever! Thanks!

  • Thanks Whistlemaker1 :-)

  • God, this is great. Thank you!!!

  • Hi Whistlemaker1 - I'm not sure if you mean it's out of synch or just that he's got fast fingers? Probably a bit of both! :-)

  • This brings back great memories for me. I used to watch this programme on video over and over when I was 5 years old and this was one of my favourite parts. I was fascinated by it! It really made me want to learn the fiddle, and I did! Any chance you could fix the sound quality in another upload? no problem if it's not possible.

  • That guy Cathal Hayden.. Incredible playing! Sure, bad sound quality, but his sound is truly great!

  • wow

  • Hi - don't know if you still listen to these tunes at all - your question has finally been answered by bruceleeC64 :-)

  • wow! this is great! i happen to have a copy of a cd from cathal hayden given by a friend and was impressed by it but this is my first time to see and watch him perform in a video. what a pleasure! i wonder where he performs in ireland?

  • Amazing music and its setting reinforces how natural this music is and its true musicianship. No electronics or gimmicky synths just two musicians at the top og their craft. I love the microwave. Ceol anamúil sa chistin. An suíomh is fearr. Is rud nadúrtha é.

  • @courtmacsherry And the tractor outside the window.

  • This is fantastic! Too bad the audio is clipping so much.... Yes, these are indeed two of Ireland's finest musicians, and then some. I've heard a lot of their recordings, but not ever seen them in video before.

  • Excellent !

  • They are great, but who are they?

  • Thanks for the note. They are two of Ireland's finest musicians. For any more than that please enter their names, individually, in Google and the top result in each case will tell you all you need to know. regards uistman59

  • hi der!! these two fellas are 2 of the most established musicians in ireland. hav you heard of 4 men and a dog. 2 founder members andstill in the band. from county tyrone in the north of ireland. great part of the country for real ulster style music!! by the way love your music too!! big cape breton fan!!! keep igt up!!!

  • Awesome!

  • Magic music from the masters.

BTW which tv prog is this clip from? I recognise the location right at the very end; it's on Clonard Street, Belfast.

  • Sorry. I don't know. I only know it was many years ago and I didn't get the start but lots of the bits on my channel come from it.

  • Thanks

  • WHATS THAT LAST TUNE????

  • I'm not a great expert on Irish tunes. Is it 'The Longford Collector'? I'm sorry the sound isn't so good towards the end of this clip.
