Wow!!! This is awesome. I first saw this when it was broadcast on TV years ago, when I first started learning the fiddle and have been trying to find it ever since. Tonight I came across you posting which has ended my 20 year search for this! Blistering playing, absolute genius. His style is wonderful! Thank you so much :)
I've just seen Cathal play these tunes at the start of his set this evening at An Droichead (in Belfast). He played them better, probably even faster, and with more variations (and the sound was good too). Then he played some spellbinding reels and jigs on the banjo - again with lots of variations, almost like jazz. PJ MacDonald, Mairtin O'Connor and Donal Lunny were onstage with him too - all excellent, just as one would expect. It was a mighty evening ...
have listened far more than 20 times - still struggling but......in a few weeks....gonna try and play both fiddle tunes...record them...post them...commited now I guess !
the second tune is charlie lennon's no. 4 and what a tune it is! i've listened to this vid about 20 times just to get the notes down on fiddle...mental stuff!
yup- great fiddler -fast and precise with great ornamentation/ improvisation- Have hunted for the name of the two pieces no luck - any ideas ? Also possibly its slightly sped up - half a tone higher than norm and sounds a tiny bit high frequency . Spect he can play it fastr in real life though !
I'm no further forward than I was last year when I said I wasn't a great expert on Irish tunes. I thought that the second one might be 'The Longford Collector' or a variation of it but I just don't know.
actually youtube has a lot of starter videos for playing guitar if u own one. i hear guitar for dummies is very simple and easy to learn by also. i learned a lot of songs off here, once u get the basics off the learner vids.
This brings back great memories for me. I used to watch this programme on video over and over when I was 5 years old and this was one of my favourite parts. I was fascinated by it! It really made me want to learn the fiddle, and I did! Any chance you could fix the sound quality in another upload? no problem if it's not possible.
great music seen arty peform in brisbane festival hall queensland australia in 1977? with the world guinness tour went for 4hrs never forget that night Seamus mc gillion left Omagh in 1974 emigrated to australia ,.
Tyrone Boys in full flight around Drumquin. Now add a few more insruments chiefly fiddles, a banjo and telecaster perhaps? O' aye! Imagine that and host of tapping feet and ladies swaying their long wavy hair while courting pints of porter...thanks for posting
wow! this is great! i happen to have a copy of a cd from cathal hayden given by a friend and was impressed by it but this is my first time to see and watch him perform in a video. what a pleasure! i wonder where he performs in ireland?
Amazing music and its setting reinforces how natural this music is and its true musicianship. No electronics or gimmicky synths just two musicians at the top og their craft. I love the microwave. Ceol anamúil sa chistin. An suíomh is fearr. Is rud nadúrtha é.
This is fantastic! Too bad the audio is clipping so much.... Yes, these are indeed two of Ireland's finest musicians, and then some. I've heard a lot of their recordings, but not ever seen them in video before.
Thanks for the note. They are two of Ireland's finest musicians. For any more than that please enter their names, individually, in Google and the top result in each case will tell you all you need to know. regards uistman59
hi der!! these two fellas are 2 of the most established musicians in ireland. hav you heard of 4 men and a dog. 2 founder members andstill in the band. from county tyrone in the north of ireland. great part of the country for real ulster style music!! by the way love your music too!! big cape breton fan!!! keep igt up!!!

I could be wrong, but I think that the video was part of a great series on Irish music called "Bringing It All Back Home" from the 1990's

Nah, It's not sped up. Cathal has his fiddle tuned up by a semitone, and Arty has a capo on the first fret.
Cathal really does play that fast ;) Would love to know the name of the first tune, it's a belter
