hornymonk, it flashed red to show the direction you got hit fron, from where you were looking at from the time of the hit, also, with practice you just know, you learn there obv hiding spots and look for muzzle flash, movement, or maybe even shells, and noise.

CS:S has enlarged hitboxes making headshots and body shots a lot easier to get.
