  • lol wasnt text book lol but atleast u got him thats what counts lol good fight

  • we do push-ups if we get caught locking up like that at the begining

  • The biggest difference in a sg or bjj match from judo is the scoring. Throws are great, but you have to immobilize or control the opponent at the end for there to be any effect. You just need to work on not stopping at the throw, but going right into ground work, basically using 'koka judo' then moving into your bjj or whatever style you use.

  • I've been competing in BJJ for about 1.5 years and in judo for a long time. Nice idea with tai otoshi but you must adapt it for BJJ. It is critical that you have good control when you land. In BJJ, I try to throw my tai-o a bit "short", almost like aiming for a hard yuko instead of ippon. That way I don't overrotate. Then, I try to fall into kazure kesa gatame instead of regular kesa to prevent him from taking my back. For guys like kungfuhippy who bend over, work on your sumi gaeshi. :)

  • Good job on your first tournament!

I've been doing no-gi BJJ for 2 years and Judo for about 6 months and I understand where you're coming from. However, you gotta understand that in BJJ, the newaza is like a chess match, people take their time until they feel the need to explode and move.

In BJJ, defending a move won't get you stood back up. Unless he gets a dominant position and actually makes it obvious that he has no intention to do anything then you guys won't be stood up.

  • You also did a great job defending the Gi choke i was trying(i suck at Gi, no-Gi is more my style), but according to bjj rules everywhere, me attempting a technique and you defending against it doesnt count as stalling. If it makes you feel any better,my ribs were broke all to hell from training earlier and that tai otoshi put the finishing touches on them.yeeeoooww those ribs were hurting for weeks after this NAGA. Anyhoot, hope to see you around and best of luck at the next tourney ^_^

  • Hi, My name is Matt and im the other guy in the video.I didnt get any points for a takedown, neither did you because neither one of our butts stayed down.I got 4 points for a back mount and 2 points for a armbar attempt.I hate to be an ass but me trying to armbar you and then trying to omaplata you(unsuccessfully to my discredit) doesnt count as you breaking my guard. This tourney was in november, i started bjj in august,i had 0 tournament experience, but i DID read the rules before competing.

  • I hope you did good. I have won one and lost one this time.

  • Matt, ur opponent initiated the t-down and you rolled him through. Since he did not establish control b/c you rolled him through, I awarded him an advantage and you 2 pts for a sweep. I should have ruled it, advantage for the td initiation and an advantage to you for rolling him through (my error). In BJJ you are not awarded pts for attempted submissions (no-gi NAGA does). However, you are awarded advantages for submission attempts when the opponent is in danger of being submitted.

  • Yeah, you dont need me to tell you this but just spend more time on the mat. Also there are alot of good techniques on you tube. I like to watch expert jiu jitsu to try to pick up on strategy too.

  • nice throw but it was completly useless if u end up in a bad position, the reason the rules are like this is because NAGA is supposed to be very practical and almost like mma without strikes, so technique doesn't count for much, if u take their back u could pummel ur opponent in a fight and u've got like a 70 percent chance of getting a submission, the rules award positional advantage above all else, so it doesn't matter if ur technique looks prettier, in bjj stick to greco throws.

  • you didn't execute tai otoshi properly because he ended up on top of you. 2 points for him.

then he sunk in the hooks, 4 points.

  • wow I just read the post about the naga rules.Rear mount with hooks=4 points thats ridiculous imo.I've never been to an event but with the scoring sytem they have I can only imagine the amount of stalling there must be.Although with these rules in mind I think you could use your judo experience to your advantage like I mentioned in an earlier post just need to polish your finish to the throw.

  • every bjj tourney on the planet scores 4pts for rmount w hooks

  • Also another observation I noticed after the throw if you had flattened yourself out by tucking your right leg under yourself while maintaining wrist control he would never have been able to roll you over like that.Obviously easier said than done but I believe that would have been textbook,at least thats how I was taught to finish the throw.Hope you can understand what I'm saying.

  • You are right. It is just my own bad habbit to roll because I don't want to hurt my apponnent ribs by landing on them. I can't wait for the next big event.

  • I finally fuckin hear soemone talking with some sense. You are truly a rare person. Many people forget that while you do want to beat your opponent, it is not necessary to hurt them.

    Great work and great technique.

  • Nice effort imho you sshould have made more effort to get him in your guard he looked like he wasnt working the choke too well after he had your back for that long .

  • I agree. I think there should be a rule change so if they can't do any thing for 30sec or 1 min they should stand people up and start over. I really tried hard to get him off my back however he had his long leg locked around my abdemon. Any way you can only learn from your mistakes and I am looking forward for future. I just finished second in U.S Judo national in Ontario, Ca so I am very excited however I still do Jujitsu and need to develop my ground game as much as my throwing technics.

  • how long were you in jujitsu when this was taped ? you did good :)

  • Well,I used to do Judo since i was 9yrs old in Iran which I recived my kyu 1 or highest brown belt.I moved 2 U.S in 1999 and I never had a chance 2do any kind of training.I start doing Jujitsu since Jan 2007.I have a green belt in BJJ.last month I went to California and Sensei Gary Goltz Ranked Dan 7 /head of USJA permoted me Black Belt after observing me, I also compete in USJA USJF joint Judo National event and finished second. I had 9 wins and 1 loss

  • for how long did you train.. or are training :)

  • This video was my first Jujitsu tournoment. I have been doing jujitsu for 7 months in this video. I have a good stand up techniques however I need to develop my ground games.

  • I forgot 2 say thank you for watching my video and your encouraging comments.

  • a tip: if he locks his legs like that their are about 6 or 7 foot locks that are legal in kids because the only work if he's stuborn and won't just open his legs; allowing u to escape

  • Standing people up is my exact problem with judo rules. How can you try to work your groundgame if not given the chance. I love judo, but it often seems to get away from letting people work their game on the ground. Nice throw though.

  • sweet throw dude. XD

i didn't get a chance to throw, my opponent tried a flying armbar, but my left-handed grip messed him up. XP

anyway, like you said: keep training. what else is there to do, yeah?

good luck. maybe i'll see ya at the next one. ^_^

  • .... you are the winner in my heart .....

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhh That's sooo sweat lol hahahaha

  • He initiated the takedown and was swept. According to BJJ rules, the player that initiated is given an advantage and the player that executed the sweep receives two points. Upon further review of the tape, it could have also been scored advantage for initiated takedown and advantage for sweeping/rolling him. Regardless of that situation, he would still have lost the match whether it was 6-0 or 4-0.

  • You are right. I need to train harder and get ready for the next event. Its just my habit to roll over when I do a throw so I don't hurt my opponent ribs. And I still think there should be a rule change to stand you up after one minute if there is no result. I know you said he was working my collar even if that was the case still if you look at the time on the video we were in the same position for 3:30 minutes. I need to work on my defenses so I don't get stuck in the same position again.

  • I hope you be the judge on my next match again.I have certainly learned a lot about the BJJ rules for couple of days.

  • Strange for your opponent to get points for the takedown. He didn't do a takedown. He just took advantage of your no points takedown. There is a distinction. You threw him but didn't hold him down so no points. He then rolled you and got your back so point for only that.

And then even if we say the opponent did do a take down according to Observation 2 it doesn't get points. You had one knee on the ground and he did not have both feet on the ground.

  • Thank you for watching my video and your comments. I hope I do better next time.

  • Even so Naga rules. In naga the ref was perfect in the call.

  • If you don't finish the movement on top what was the purpose of throwing in the first place? Also don't think for a second you were the only BJJ player who cross trains Judo. If you keep your eyes open you will see many very accomplished Judo players.

  • Thank you for your comments. I know for fact that there many accomplished judo players and I have never said I was the only one. I wished these great players use more Technical throws than just a morote-gari (double leg take down) or sukui-nage (single leg)

  • Brother as a judo player myself (going on 16 years) I feel your pain. Not so much for the lack of throws because I often see them but for the fact that they score a beautiful uchimata the same an ankle pick.

  • I am not going to get to critical with you because you are new to the game. You understand the rules now so no need to explain that. Basically I wanted to say that the goal of Judo is to cleanly throw your opponent to his back in sub grappling throws only serve as a means to get the match to mat.

  • like to thank Mr. Kollar for sending me an e-mail and explaining the BJJ rules. Also the ref ('Richard Graeff') for giving me a courtesy call so I won't get discourage and keep fighting
