Great vid brother. How long will it take your dog to take a leak on your head once you get all wrapped up. He wanted some face time on the camera too! lol
@ERICWAGNERSLUCID You want a Heavy-duty 100% pure wool. Sportsman's Guide dot com sells an Italian Military 81 x 64" 100% Wool Blanket for $29.97. I hope this helps.
@Pat5725 Thanks! I have an Italian one of those, it's ok. I just picked up a Brun De Vian-Tiran (the "Reale" model, 100% merino wool, 66x90) list 500.00 plus, I got it for 139.00!
This is great! I am going to be using a wool blanket for 7 days in Arizona in May. This is a huge help. By the way, my blanket is 66 X 90 and covers me completely, and I even can wrap my head. Brilliant.
What i would really like to know is what blanket are you using mate because i have never seen such a huge blanket in my life. all other blankets are half the size!
Awesome. Great video. I only use a wool blanket for camping. It's a lot more comfortable and versatile than a sleeping bag. I'm going to have to try this out.
no offense but this looks like a lot of wasted time and energy when a sleeping bag wraps you up a lot more easily, efficiently and can be a lot more warmer.
Love it !Absolutly love it .got me two wool blankets now.tried rappin like you said works ok but i need to loose 30 lbs. or so and would work alot better, lolkeep up the awsome work man, cheers
And... you can spring out of your bedroll and figt off any hostile indians which might sneak up on you in the night :) Nice video... I use wool blankets when camping and have never tried your method before, I think I will next time.
I have to say that it looks good, & sounds good in theory, but somehow I can't see me doing this every time I get up for a pee. I also do not like being so restricted in my movement. Just the same, I might give this method a try. Thank you.
Well presented, though I don't like your choice of music!
Man two people don't like wool! That's the only reason I could think of for the dislikes! Great video bro. I use the wool blanket also but can never keep it on me at night. I always wake up with my feet cold. I'm going to give this a try, Thanks for the info.
@DigitalCard What animal? Bears hybernate during winter. And If your in dangerous animal territory what are you doing without a .44 mag? ........city people pffff.
ATTENTION!! Make sure you find out if you are alergic to wool before you use it! I found out the hard way when I slept with one (for a week but thats a long story) and ended up with a rash for the following 2-3 weeks.
You may stay warm but you are also staying put, i.e. you're wrapped up like a mummy. If I'm ever sleeping in a unsecure locatgion (outdoors) I want to remain mobile. You never know when you may have to jump up and run or fight or whatever. Maybe a bear comes along, maybe a murderer, or maybe a spark from your fire sets your tent ablaze. It may only take 2 or 3 seconds to unwrap yourself, but those seconds may be the difference between living and dieing.
@robbykfunk thats were the dog comes in ..cant get a better early warning sentry than mans best friend........
i must admit when he was wrapping his feet..said locking it in...i was thinking on the same lines. this bloke knows his business..cant beat hands on exsperience...when he gets back im buying one of his tarps...
Either you are using a huge blanket or you are pretty short. I use an oversize italian wool blanket and if I wrap my feet like you demonstrate then the blanket barely reaches my shoulders, much less wrap up over my head.
Thanks for the reply. That explains the difference. I'm 6'3" and my blanket is 64"x82". I'll just have to bring extra wool socks and try this with 1 wrap around my feet.
now that is what I call maximum use of material. i remember using just a wool blanket when i was in basic training for the Army and out of all the cool stuff they taught us this is one trick that woulda been good to know. good stuff!
Damn, this is how my wife sleeps.....she takes all the covers. So one night I did a cover attack and snatched them all. HA...after 20 years....I "Bogarted" the blankets. Her penalty for loud snoring! tee hee
cool! another good idea and very light, inexpesive is to use a car foil windshield sun blocker thing as a heat pad under your body to cushen and reflect the heat. weighs nothing and for about $5 you have an added comfort
@RavenBlaze I agree; the point of the video was the blanket, not the dog however. Still, it would have been nice to see him snuggle up with the pup at the very end. It's a good dog that knows what to do, without being told. She knew what was going on; that's a well trained dog. :)
i folded it inhalf sowed mine up like a sleeping bag, across the bottom and up one side except about 18 inches at the top. workes prity good for me but this is great....great vid.
@chrestoflexer It is a lot of work but I would still recommend learning how to do this and practice a bit. That way if it's all you have you can still get by.
Also have you priced sleeping bags? Yeesh those can be expensive. This could be an option.
Nice technique, but wow--I don't think I could stand being this confined. Maybe if there was a blizzard going on...but still it's useful information I will mentally file away.
Thanxs for the tips dude, I used that technique recently on a Canoe trip, with a an 8-point hudsons bay blanket...slept better than the old lady in her MEC sleeping bag!!!
Hey dude!!Great tips man! I really dig it dude! I´ll try it here in Brazil where I live this weekend now. It´s winter here and I´m gonna be spending the nest 3 weekends at our local rocky mountains, so it gets pretty chillie at night. Thank you so much for the tips again, and I´ll let you know how it was, ok?
Hey great idea. i used this technique in 17 degree weather (F), slept next to my fire and slept great. this would also work well with an emergency blanket inside too.
Lets take anpther poll : Who takes a tarp, sleeping bag, poncho, and a cold weather jacket with them camping during the fall? The wool blanket covers ALL these except that your sleeping bag weighs 3lb, tarp 1lb, poncho 1lb, jacket 3lbs. Total 8 lbs wool blanket 2.5 lbs
Remember multi purpose gear is the key to lighter weight rigs. Of course you have to have the knowledge base to be able to utilize the gear you have.
You can wrap and unwrap pretty fast with this rig.
Ever see a waterlogged sheep? Short term under a moderate rain wool will repel water. NOT waterproof though. The difference is that the wool blanket will keep you warm even when wet.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Let's take a poll: Who sleeps like a mummy all night? (since that seems required with this method!) You actually just talked me out of buying a wool blanket (since I do change positions in my sleep - as long as I am alive, that is)
get up in the middle of the night to pee? do that again?
who wants to have copperheads & diamondbacks in your tent at night? skunks? raccoons? blackflies?mosquitos?
in the old days they actually used big pins to pin blankets into bags. they also made the blankets from rabbit strips & woove them together. i love the old stuff & ways but it is a new day. read book Cache Lake. Best outdoor book ever written but long forgotten.
Army Surplus stores are a good place to look, although the only wool blankets from the Army Surplus store near me were quite small. I don't know if that's a general Army blanket trait, or just by poor luck, but you could try looking there.
How much does your wool blanket weigh? Would your wool blanket keep you warm at 30 or 40 degrees? At what temperature would you need your sleeping bag? Thanks
Good vid! I really wanted to know how to not use a sleeping bag since i dont like them. Even tho the blanket seems very constricted, i dont think I will find them as much so as I do with sleeping bags!
Dogs must pity us for all the hassle we need for a good nites sleep!
