Saw the original Broadway revival cast, with the exception of Ann who had left by then--July, 1997. Marilu Henner was Roxie. The show as a whole made little impact on me at the time. Maybe jetlag? We also didn't have the best seats. I think we were about 3/4 of the way back in the orchestra section. Good seats, but not great; it was hard to see facial expressions. I do recall loving Bebe and being utterly shocked at Mary's reveal! Henner was good but I would have loved to see Ann's unique take.
@LaMisereHQ Sorry I missed your reference to "revival cast". I saw the original. Reinking was great in both productions but aged like a fine wine. In the original, she was more of a Gwen Verdon copy. WIth this revival, she was a star!
@toobusywriting Yes but not only did Gwen look like she was 30 at the time, she was MARRIED to Bob Fosse! I have the script. I think circumstance and star casting usually allows for Roxie to be older than scripted.
@TheShiksaGoddess I'm not sure she looked, or even moved, 30 judging from the Merv Griffin clip, BUT yes, I get your point. She prob sold it better. It is kind of funny to see certain actresses sing "Me and My Baby" sometimes, though! lol
Guys, will you hush! Look at Ann act and dance! She just exudes style and purpose! Look at those hands and arms! She's SOOOoo expressive and sharp and intricate!
I noticed she does this number a little faster than most Roxie's *cough cough Charlotte d'Amboise, whose monologue is like 10 minutes*, but she's still fabulous nonetheless!
haha I love it!! My dad and I saw her, Charlotte, on B'way and it got to the point we were both looking at each other like "ummmmm can you move this sh!t along",lol. Ann in this does an amazing job here!!!! Charlotte's performance is good, but she just goes on and on and on and on for as you said about 10 minutes, no joke people, and the does the song.
Ashlee Simpson wasn't bad and she's in her 20's. Anne Reinking was the PERFECT Roxie back in 1975, in the 1997 revival though, she was a tad old for the role. I love her though - she's SO talented.
Omg! im 14 yrs old and i use to be a big fan of hers when i found her in Annie! and there is no E at the end of her name!!! try learning how to spell! sheesh! lol
Don't forget that most Roxie's are over 50 years old. I haven't heard of a woman playing Roxie who is in her 20's and is actually suited for the role.
I wasn't really thinking age so much as height and presence. Most Roxie's seem to have too much star-confidence to pull off the naive nature of Roxie.
I saw Emma Barton in the recent UK tour, she was Roxy and is 28, Twinnie Lee Moore was Velma and is 22. They are part of a professional cast and thought neither are well known they are ones to watch for sure. Emma was briefly in the BBC soap "Eastenders" as Honey Mitchell.
Just went and saw Sharon and Carolyn in the Sydney production tonight! Wow - just wow - JUST as good as the New York production I saw quite a few years ago!
I miss Anne so much! I've gotten to take master classes from her and go to Q&As the past two summers and she's such an amazing performer and lady! Soooo cute here!!!
She is wonderful... The "I'm a star...." part, when she delivered the dialogue so fast, reminded me of how she argued with Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) in a scene from Annie, when Miss Hannigan doesn't want ANnie to be going with her. lol
Zellweger.. I didn't know that Ann Reinking played as Roxie! Whew! She was just so great in the Moive rendintion of ANnie, I guess she would be doing just great too in this onE!
Interesting rendition, she seems a little older than I would normally view Roxie, she makes me think more of a Velma, personally. I kinda feel Roxie shouldn't sound quite as mature, isn't the character supposed to be like 24 or something?
Plus, Ann Reinking was one of the actresses to play Roxie in the original production after Gwen Verdon left the show. She's still the best thing going on two legs!
awesome doesn't cut it :-)

She is this role. She owns the choreography - she performs it as if she choreographed it. Cuz she did.
