People from the English speaking part of the world just don't get, that German jokes work quiet different. That depends on the German language... It's quiet easy to make jokes (not this one!) when the spoken word can mean multiple things. E.g. the word 'two' sounds like 'too', 'to' etc. In Germany we have very different words for every god damn meaning. There was a great article in the London Times a few month ago, where a British Comedian described the way German jokes work. It's not our fault.

Comedy is based on cultural context. So I see 2 reasons why she didnt get the joke
1) Most Germans are probably not aware that there are so many Jewish comedians in the U.S., why should they?
2) In Germany the Holocause is mainly a very serious topic and humor about it is rare, frowned upon and considered bad taste by a big majority. Also it's kinda insensitive to make that kind of joke as an foreigner.
It's not like Germans don't have any humor, but our stand-up is indeed pathetic...

There is an English word for Schadenfreude though, it's called "gloating". It's the exact same concept. I understand that Americans don't know their own language but I'm always surprised when a Brit doesn't think of this.

ihr selber schaut euch doch auch ständig amerikanische comedy shows an und findet das total witzig. das hat unter anderem natürlich mit sprache zu tun, aber wenn man sieht, dass man sogar über die synchronisierten sendungen lacht, obwohl viele komische sprachwendungen nicht einmal richtig übersetzt wurden, kann man sehen, dass die amerikaner einen wesentlich mehr universalen humor besitzen.

It's just comedy, it's not supposed to be taken seriously. I've seen many German programs making fun of Americans in a similar way, considering them to be very ignorant and rude, when that's not the case for all people.

ihr selber schaut euch doch auch ständig amerikanische comedy shows an und findet das total witzig. das hat unter anderem natürlich mit sprache zu tun, aber wenn man sieht, dass man sogar über die synchronisierten sendungen lacht, obwohl viele komische sprachwendungen nicht einmal richtig übersetzt wurden, kann man sehen, dass die amerikaner einen wesentlich mehr universalen humor besitzen.

You can make jokes as many as you want about Germany today, but I'm tired of jokes about our history. That's why a lot of people still think a lot of Germans were Nazis and that's why the comments are disabled at the German national anthem.

@2663821 I just wanna mention that most of Germanic names are also German names. Wilhelm is one of those.
For example:
The last German Emperor was Wilhelm II.
And that means William is German too. ;)
