  • and a 'loss leader' to boot!!! never earned them a penny at the time...in fact, practically bankrupted everyone!!! oh the deliscious irony of it all!!! Antony H. Wilson....LEGEND..(and twat!) <3 xxx

  • daily dose of self-pity. wish i had some blow

  • Are you sure it's not an 8-inch floppy... holding a whopping 168 kb of data! Bad block-unknown sector. Unable to complete file save...

But damn this song rocks... danced with a lot of chicks at clubs I might otherwise not have becuase it was so damn good!

  • like if orgy brought you here

  • @bastardmaker :

    HaHaHaHa!

No, but the good thing is you're still here.

  • the early eighties keele. buzarre hair, friends who were grpwn ups

  • OMG the memories! early eighties, bad hair and big clothes! or was it the other way around? (there was some) great music though.

  • thumbs down if you're still stealing mom's make up...........

  • Was only originally released on 12" as a dj`s spinner, plain black cover with words FAC 73 down the spine... still have it in the loft...Mint...!!

  • @0509rt I have three, (originally my dads) one got scratched and doesn't work, but the other two are okay as far as i know, do you know how much they are worth?, i'm thinking of getting them appraised, but i'm not willing to sell them

  • In the Netherlands the TROS mixed Blue Monday and The Beach together; one in the left stereo channel, the other in the right. This gave a special effect in synchronicity, and above all the difference in the lyrics.

  • I used to listen to this all of the time...New Order still keeps me rockin!!!!!

  • cool mega cool like me.

  • jadore i love it

  • I still have the original 12" Is it still the best selling 12" of all time?

  • @2639629 think so,,,an if it aint should be!!!!

  • @2639629 it is and i cant see that changing anytime soon haha :)

  • @2639629 i do belive so , and at its release and height in 83 it was played somewhere in the world every 5 min so that ment it was being played somewhere before the last one finished so that is a prity cool feat non stop blue monday !!!

  • @2639629 yes

  • SUPERB

  • superb then and now

  • techno jam session!!!

  • thumbs is right!!!!!!

  • Thumbs up if you used to dance to this, and make the drumming motions, and then had a HUGE smile of satisfaction if you managed to get it right!

  • POWERFULL synthpop

  • ..........................:-).....;;YEEAAH..!

  • The thing that set New Order apart from most dance/techno bands is the fact that they can actually play instruments. Sumner, Hook, and Morris (all formerly of Joy Division) and Gilbert are all very technically proficient on their instruments, rarely using recorded tracks even when they were playing live.

This is true of other great dance/techno bands like Kraftwerk and Massive Attack. Real music is made by people who can play instruments, not idiots with samplers.

    .

  • I bought this 12" at a Sam the Record Man ages ago, little knowing I was in fact making Factory go bankrupt. What was the last count, three pounds out for every record sold? :)

  • Wow, they simply don't make them like this anymore. The graphic is actually the record cover, which of course was made to look like a floppy disk.

  • Wow, they simply don't make them like this anymore.

  • In '83 and '84 I must have danced to this song in every nightclub in New Zealand - and a few in California. It was definitely my favourite - and it has really held up over time. People are still remixing the heck out of it. Most synth/drum machine/music of that era sounds so primitive by 2011 standards - but New Order managed to get the best out of their equip so it doesn't have that thin 8-bit craptastic quality. Wonder how they managed that? Anyway, love this track.

  • @Alistairville i believe it was martin hannetts know how on using effects to thicken sounds

  • I remember buying the last copy of this import at a popular record store in West Hollywood right on Santa Monica Blvd. (Prime Cuts). Owner Gene Underwood called me and said he had something that I would be interested in and that he would save the last one he had for sale. Needless to say, when I got there and put played it for me to listen, a handful of customers ran to the front and asked where's a copy they can buy. He just told them it was for me and that he would have to order some more.

  • greatest 12'' record of all time

  • masturbatory music background sounds like this one..not their best but i like it though

  • Electronic disco. At least (as opposed to most music today not called Pop), this and disco were gender, political, and sexual orientation inclusive.

  • the most danceable song

  • i bought this original 12"...wore it out n went and bought it again...CLASSIC!!!!!!!!

  • i wanna fuck with this playing... then die.

  • Trying to wait patiently....... Blu with out u. fell for u hook line and sinker.

    i know ur blu 2......

  • Love this song; I've been listening to it on the tram ride home from work and it sets me up for a great evening ;)

  • way ahead of its time!

  • avampireconfesses . com ,.>:E'''

  • I graduated high school in 1988. I grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and MTV used to come do live broadcasts for spring break there and Panama City Beach. Those were great times!. This song is just as awesome today as it was then. Thanks for uploading!

  • This brings back so many memory's, loved it in the 80`s and still do....an evergreen

What was the B side? The Beach?

  • This brings back so many memory's, loved it in the 80`s and still do....an evergreen

  • Thumbs up if you recognize the graphic as a 5 1/4" floppy disk.

  • @Shango Sorry no, I recognise it as the cover of New Order's Blue Monday on 12" vinyl lol

  • Comment removed

  • @Shango Appologies for causing offence. It really was only a tongue in cheek comment. The graphic is in fact a factory universal sleve which was used on a few occasions for 12" mix releases and not just Blue Monday. The dimensions however are taken more from a 10" magnetic acetate cased disk which were very popular during the late 70's and early eighties, particularly with engineered computer systems. The image was chosen for its futuristic outlook, so much better than 1" magnetic tape!

  • @gamein60seconds

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I think I vaguely remember the 10" disks but those were way before my time. Funny how the futuristic look has now become retro.

  • @Shango Thumbs up if you know this song was originally on a floppy

  • @ShogunX11 By the time MP3s became popular, 5 1/4" floppies were already outdated so your statement makes no sense.

  • @Shango A 5 1/4" floppy doesn't even have close to the storage required to hold a single song

  • @Nvidiaguides I never suggested otherwise.

  • @Shango In South Africa when the 3.5" disks came out, they called them "Stiffies"

  • @Shango I think that it was a life size 12 inch floppy -- Wang word processers used 'em. The original vinyl single cover was die cut too. Incredibly hip at the time. My jaw dropped the first time I heard this.

  • @Shango of course it is and more t up if u still have one!

  • Mid 80s..... Loving this Song .... 12 " ROCKED at the DISCO with the strobe light and mirror ball. The moves on the Dance Floor with all the Guys doing the ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!!! The DANCE COMPETITIONS were what we lived for.

With our make up and BIG HAIR....WOW!!

    THOSE WERE THE DAYS KIDS!!!!

  • I didn't go through all of the comments, but the record company lost money on every copy sold. That awesome floppy disc style pakaging ws very expensive to produce

  • Oberheim DMX, Moog Source, Emulator 2, Prophet 5, simmons 5, the sound of euphoria!!!

  • The first times of the tecno - pop music, beautiful sound araund my head :)

  • Yes, this reminds me of when they did the Robotics to it.

  • I have this - twice over - love love love this all time fave! so many memories especially my 18th!

  • This was by far the best version, not that nasty 1988 remixed version.

  • one of the best songs ever made

  • muito boa. afinal e new order.

  • Thankyou TheLightningStalker for uploading this extended play original version of my favourtie New Order song. I got on YT tonight to listen to Ian to commemorate his life as he would have been 55 today and just moved from Joy Division songs to New order and remembered the absolute thrill I use to get out of listening to both of these epic bands. It would have been nice to still have Ian with us today however his legacy is still with us here on YT and he will always be in our hearts, RIP Ian xox

  • Does anyone have a list of the instruments used on this track? I love the choir in it, but have no idea what synth it is. Thanks!

  • @berlinsneakerz The few details I do know are that the keyboard used was a Moog Source and the choir sound was likely sampled from Radioactive by Kraftwerk.

  • @TheLightningStalker Hi, so I went back and listened to it and it does sound a lot like it. So then I research to see what it was and from the Kraftwerk trivia I read, it's supposed to be a Moog which is kind of to realistic to be an analog synth, but... I'd love to hear that pad in person!

  • @TheLightningStalker it was computer recorded on Amiga gear...

  • @TheLightningStalker

The choir on this trac is the real mellotron synth choir believe it or not...

  • @TheLightningStalker - The drum machine is an Oberheim DMX, years ago when I was into collecting old synths I bought the DX version just because of this track!

  • @TheLightningStalker Sampled using an Emulator from Radioactivity, indeed.

  • @berlinsneakerz - I was really into New Order early eighties and loved trivia - as most kids do.

The news at the time was that it was most likely a Fairlight (early sampler) and some samples from an Emulator 3. At one point there were only three Fairlights in the country and New Order had two of them.

    There were ridiculously expensive.

  • @971alien Hi, I remember the Fairlight. If I'm not mistaken, Duran Duran used in on their third album and also songs like View to a Kill. Samplers were so expensive back then. I spent 2k on th sp1200 and and almost 3k on an emax hdse- these days you can get more for that much money. Did you see the prior thread about Kraftwerks Radioaktive- did you listen to it, it's very similar!

  • @berlinsneakerz Am guessing a Yamaha DX7, but i could be wrong.

  • @berlinsneakerz 2x prophet 10 synths using an ARP drumbox and x-samples. there is no choir.

  • @berlinsneakerz this one time, in band camp.... ;-) just fuckin wit ya. This is probably the most respected club track of all time. It's been played over and over through the years. The original 12" version is the most requested version. What can i say? They got this track right back in 1981 and it just keeps resurfacing in its original form! I have the '88 remix on vinyl and it just blows!!!

  • @berlinsneakerz it´s a Mellotron choir

  • Comment removed

  • @berlinsneakerz The synths they used were: Oberhein DMX drum machine, Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, Emu Emulator, Moog Source, Sequential Circuits Poly Sequencer.

  • @edgey2001 From what Ive seen and read, the 'umpa umpa' baseline was played on the prophet 5 and synced to the sequencer as was the Oberheim Drum machine, the choir sample played on the Emulator 1 was sample from Radioactivity by Kraftwerk, the emulator 1 had a sample time of about 3 to 4 seconds, this was made before the Emulator 2 came out (1984) , there is also an arpeggio all the way through the song that comes in at 2:13, not sure which synth was used for this. Recorded Nov 1982.

  • @berlinsneakerz google this "new order blue monday sound on sound"

  • @berlinsneakerz

    Oberheim DMX drum machine

    Moog Source

Powertran Sequencer home built by Bernard Sumner

    Emulator (keyboard/sampler)

    Conventional Bass guitar

P.S The choir pad was sampled from the song 'Uranium' by Kraftwerk

  • Nope. These days people are just uploading the best quality and not making excuses. YT will audio block you if there is a problem.

  • Brilliant, Timeless...MASTERFUL!!!

  • tony wilson died a few years ago. RIP

  • LightningStalker,

    You did your best.

This is the best version available on youtube.

I really appreciate your meticulous work, thanks.

  • great job, great recording............CHEERS!!!!

  • Ah the memories...

  • A truly groundbreaking track, started a whole new genre. The original is still by far the best. I still have this 12", despite nearly wearing it out with repeated plays. Drove my parents mad :)

  • lol i fucking love this song, its goddamn catchy

  • The original is far better than any of the remixes.

  • I remember rushing out to revolver to buy this 12" back in 84, good times!

  • This brings back painful memories...why oh why did I let my ex take my 12" collection???

I miss it so much. I would rank this as one of the best if not arguably the best albums from the 80's. New order and TFF still sound amazing even today.

  • the legend is back great year 1984

  • only great.. it remebers me to my youth, which was so great.. first time at disco... first beer.. first dance and first kiss... fantastic! i love it!

  • i;ve been looking for this song! omg im soo happy now! yyyyeeesss! ohmygoodness this is soo awsome im gonna die. omg omg omg omg! ......... its a great song ^_^

  • an electronic masterpiece, lightyears ahead of its time, never forget the 1st time a heard it,...fuckin epic!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've wanted to know the title of this song for years!

  • damn gotta admit this version is very nice, gonna have to remove the previous one for this! So dark, so lush, so syncopated, so British of the 80s

  • Yep,this is the best version of a brilliant sing.

  • Stately, intense, compulsive. It's a good thing you've done here

  • Thx for this but the highest quality is DEF not mp3 at max (320kbs) look up FLAC (free lossless audio codec) the file is as good as WAVE (original CD quality). MP3 is like a JPEG - FLAC is like BITMAP.

  • Finally, an unremixed version of this wonderful song!!!!!! I clearly hate that Orgy crap.

  • Original and best as usual, The crap re issue versions with the stupid squawking women ruined them. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

  • love this song x

  • This is my favourite song of all times man!!!

    Good job for uploading it!

It should stay on YouTube forever.

  • Their best tune in my opinion...

  • Anybody who first listened to this song, would say it's the original and not a remix. fuckin awesome !

  • Play in the car with window down volume up music, great

  • I'll see if i can upload it in wave then to get the quality up.

  • Master piece

  • Dies ist das einziz Wahre. Diese ganzen Re.mixes sind für'n Arsch!!!!

  • YES! The Real Version. Thanks.

  • FUCKIN AMAZIN!!

  • Will eat mushrooms tonight and let my mind fly on this beat!

  • AWESOME.

  • I sold my vinyl of this about 10 years ago for $50. What an asshole I was. I'de give anything right now to shut this fucking computer and get my turntable going with this.

  • @MrErn25 I feel your pain. I let my ex take my extensive 12" collection. *sniffle*

  • wat do u mean the audio quality is amazing best version i have found on you tube cheers.

  • WHAT A TUNE 7 MINUTES OF GENIUS

  • the highest quality its the WAV format, in 1000kbs per second.... like the original track

  • @keefguitar92

What are you fucking talking about you stupid child? The original was recorded on analog tape - 1983 - lightyears BEFORE you were even born! But I guess you don't even know what tape-recorders were... why is the youth so ignorant??? You Youtube kids suck so fucking much...

  • the highest quality its the WAV format, in 1000kbs per second.... like the original trakc

  • This awesome song is stuck in my head, since I heard it first time on Amiga...

    P.S. lol, #1FFF-st viewer ^^

  • As much as I respect Quincy Jones, he needn't have bothered. This is the BEST.

  • Hate the stupid remixes, this was by far the best.

  • @littlemissknowitall

    amen to that!

  • THIS, is the ONLY version!

  • Sorry everyone. If the copyright holder is reading this, the video was posted in good faith with the intention of promoting awareness and indirectly the legitimate sales of Blue Monday. The audio was processed by YouTube and so the quality is low to encourage purchasing of high quality versions. I recognize your right to shut this down, but I still believe it is in your best interest for this version of Blue Monday to be on YouTube. I'm on your side and I'm only trying to help you.

  • @TheLightningStalker a turning point in my life. love this record so so much. he he some cheeky memories/ thanks for the upload. just wish i hadnt sold all my records (some very rare 10" & 12" ones as well) to my brother!

  • @TheLightningStalker I hope all bands / labels (eventually, if they don't) recognise this ... reading a lot of comments lately by youngsters who are getting turned onto this stuff because of YouTube. That can only be a good thing for all concerned!

  • @TheLightningStalker They were signed with Factory Records, who were totally against the established record labels of the time. I'm sure they get an absolute kick out of seeing fans, nearly 20 years on, sharing their tunes with other fans and fans-to-be. I can't help but think that Tony Wilson (where ever he may be) is thinking, "This is proof: we were right!"

  • Awesome dude, nice to see some1 hu remembers the old days i guess, unfortunately i was not around to hear this song wen it was in its prime, but nethertheless an awesome song, 5 stars.....

  • this is the best version!!!!..the others suck_

questa è la miglior versione!!!..le altre fanno schifo_

  • How does a song from 1983 succeed in sounding futuristic in 2008? Fracking genius.

  • This Original is by far the greatest invention from the 1980's, with the 95 Hardfloor remix the best of the 90's!

  • Makes me think of my mum(R.I.P) :)

    Niceee..^^

    memories indeed!

  • OOOO finally the original version! thanks for this video!!! I love this song!

  • You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoy it.

  • Thanks for this! brings back a few memories!

  • Glad you liked it. It has that effect on me too.

  • Good 12" version.
