@0509rt I have three, (originally my dads) one got scratched and doesn't work, but the other two are okay as far as i know, do you know how much they are worth?, i'm thinking of getting them appraised, but i'm not willing to sell them
In the Netherlands the TROS mixed Blue Monday and The Beach together; one in the left stereo channel, the other in the right. This gave a special effect in synchronicity, and above all the difference in the lyrics.
@2639629 i do belive so , and at its release and height in 83 it was played somewhere in the world every 5 min so that ment it was being played somewhere before the last one finished so that is a prity cool feat non stop blue monday !!!
The thing that set New Order apart from most dance/techno bands is the fact that they can actually play instruments. Sumner, Hook, and Morris (all formerly of Joy Division) and Gilbert are all very technically proficient on their instruments, rarely using recorded tracks even when they were playing live.
This is true of other great dance/techno bands like Kraftwerk and Massive Attack. Real music is made by people who can play instruments, not idiots with samplers.
I bought this 12" at a Sam the Record Man ages ago, little knowing I was in fact making Factory go bankrupt. What was the last count, three pounds out for every record sold? :)
In '83 and '84 I must have danced to this song in every nightclub in New Zealand - and a few in California. It was definitely my favourite - and it has really held up over time. People are still remixing the heck out of it. Most synth/drum machine/music of that era sounds so primitive by 2011 standards - but New Order managed to get the best out of their equip so it doesn't have that thin 8-bit craptastic quality. Wonder how they managed that? Anyway, love this track.
I remember buying the last copy of this import at a popular record store in West Hollywood right on Santa Monica Blvd. (Prime Cuts). Owner Gene Underwood called me and said he had something that I would be interested in and that he would save the last one he had for sale. Needless to say, when I got there and put played it for me to listen, a handful of customers ran to the front and asked where's a copy they can buy. He just told them it was for me and that he would have to order some more.
I graduated high school in 1988. I grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and MTV used to come do live broadcasts for spring break there and Panama City Beach. Those were great times!. This song is just as awesome today as it was then. Thanks for uploading!
@Shango Appologies for causing offence. It really was only a tongue in cheek comment. The graphic is in fact a factory universal sleve which was used on a few occasions for 12" mix releases and not just Blue Monday. The dimensions however are taken more from a 10" magnetic acetate cased disk which were very popular during the late 70's and early eighties, particularly with engineered computer systems. The image was chosen for its futuristic outlook, so much better than 1" magnetic tape!
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I think I vaguely remember the 10" disks but those were way before my time. Funny how the futuristic look has now become retro.
@Shango I think that it was a life size 12 inch floppy -- Wang word processers used 'em. The original vinyl single cover was die cut too. Incredibly hip at the time. My jaw dropped the first time I heard this.
Mid 80s..... Loving this Song .... 12 " ROCKED at the DISCO with the strobe light and mirror ball. The moves on the Dance Floor with all the Guys doing the ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!!! The DANCE COMPETITIONS were what we lived for.
I didn't go through all of the comments, but the record company lost money on every copy sold. That awesome floppy disc style pakaging ws very expensive to produce
Thankyou TheLightningStalker for uploading this extended play original version of my favourtie New Order song. I got on YT tonight to listen to Ian to commemorate his life as he would have been 55 today and just moved from Joy Division songs to New order and remembered the absolute thrill I use to get out of listening to both of these epic bands. It would have been nice to still have Ian with us today however his legacy is still with us here on YT and he will always be in our hearts, RIP Ian xox
@berlinsneakerz The few details I do know are that the keyboard used was a Moog Source and the choir sound was likely sampled from Radioactive by Kraftwerk.
@TheLightningStalker Hi, so I went back and listened to it and it does sound a lot like it. So then I research to see what it was and from the Kraftwerk trivia I read, it's supposed to be a Moog which is kind of to realistic to be an analog synth, but... I'd love to hear that pad in person!
@TheLightningStalker - The drum machine is an Oberheim DMX, years ago when I was into collecting old synths I bought the DX version just because of this track!
@berlinsneakerz - I was really into New Order early eighties and loved trivia - as most kids do.
The news at the time was that it was most likely a Fairlight (early sampler) and some samples from an Emulator 3. At one point there were only three Fairlights in the country and New Order had two of them.
@971alien Hi, I remember the Fairlight. If I'm not mistaken, Duran Duran used in on their third album and also songs like View to a Kill. Samplers were so expensive back then. I spent 2k on th sp1200 and and almost 3k on an emax hdse- these days you can get more for that much money. Did you see the prior thread about Kraftwerks Radioaktive- did you listen to it, it's very similar!
@berlinsneakerz this one time, in band camp.... ;-) just fuckin wit ya. This is probably the most respected club track of all time. It's been played over and over through the years. The original 12" version is the most requested version. What can i say? They got this track right back in 1981 and it just keeps resurfacing in its original form! I have the '88 remix on vinyl and it just blows!!!
@edgey2001 From what Ive seen and read, the 'umpa umpa' baseline was played on the prophet 5 and synced to the sequencer as was the Oberheim Drum machine, the choir sample played on the Emulator 1 was sample from Radioactivity by Kraftwerk, the emulator 1 had a sample time of about 3 to 4 seconds, this was made before the Emulator 2 came out (1984) , there is also an arpeggio all the way through the song that comes in at 2:13, not sure which synth was used for this. Recorded Nov 1982.
A truly groundbreaking track, started a whole new genre. The original is still by far the best. I still have this 12", despite nearly wearing it out with repeated plays. Drove my parents mad :)
This brings back painful memories...why oh why did I let my ex take my 12" collection???
I miss it so much. I would rank this as one of the best if not arguably the best albums from the 80's. New order and TFF still sound amazing even today.
i;ve been looking for this song! omg im soo happy now! yyyyeeesss! ohmygoodness this is soo awsome im gonna die. omg omg omg omg! ......... its a great song ^_^
Thx for this but the highest quality is DEF not mp3 at max (320kbs) look up FLAC (free lossless audio codec) the file is as good as WAVE (original CD quality). MP3 is like a JPEG - FLAC is like BITMAP.
I sold my vinyl of this about 10 years ago for $50. What an asshole I was. I'de give anything right now to shut this fucking computer and get my turntable going with this.
What are you fucking talking about you stupid child? The original was recorded on analog tape - 1983 - lightyears BEFORE you were even born! But I guess you don't even know what tape-recorders were... why is the youth so ignorant??? You Youtube kids suck so fucking much...
Sorry everyone. If the copyright holder is reading this, the video was posted in good faith with the intention of promoting awareness and indirectly the legitimate sales of Blue Monday. The audio was processed by YouTube and so the quality is low to encourage purchasing of high quality versions. I recognize your right to shut this down, but I still believe it is in your best interest for this version of Blue Monday to be on YouTube. I'm on your side and I'm only trying to help you.
@TheLightningStalker a turning point in my life. love this record so so much. he he some cheeky memories/ thanks for the upload. just wish i hadnt sold all my records (some very rare 10" & 12" ones as well) to my brother!
@TheLightningStalker I hope all bands / labels (eventually, if they don't) recognise this ... reading a lot of comments lately by youngsters who are getting turned onto this stuff because of YouTube. That can only be a good thing for all concerned!
@TheLightningStalker They were signed with Factory Records, who were totally against the established record labels of the time. I'm sure they get an absolute kick out of seeing fans, nearly 20 years on, sharing their tunes with other fans and fans-to-be. I can't help but think that Tony Wilson (where ever he may be) is thinking, "This is proof: we were right!"
Awesome dude, nice to see some1 hu remembers the old days i guess, unfortunately i was not around to hear this song wen it was in its prime, but nethertheless an awesome song, 5 stars.....

As much as I respect Quincy Jones, he needn't have bothered. This is the BEST.

How does a song from 1983 succeed in sounding futuristic in 2008? Fracking genius.

This Original is by far the greatest invention from the 1980's, with the 95 Hardfloor remix the best of the 90's!
