@KurdstanPlanetarium i definately agree with you. "pluto should be with its own kind" he says, *scoff* give me a bloody break neil tyson! pluto has every right to be in the solar system. he is full of BS.
cause the concept is so unimportant and is pure a psychological idea.
pluto is pluto, and....period. And i love pluto more then many others,
how can a name label hurt your feelings,
i really cant absorb any of these cry babys opinions, its based upon the judge of a court debate, W0000w thats real important to the world.........not.
dwarf planet or regular planet, for whatever reason. Pluto is circling the sun, end of story, and it will do in its current shape and form, until i die. So to my conciousness pluto is a planet and will remain one.
Then...........
"planet" or "dwarfplanet" is a name, (a label) a definition by humans.
how can you care about what name you give it, it doesnt physically affect pluto so why care or even whine about it.
that resonated psychological disability if that principal is to any
this is not the way sicence is done, they took a vote like its a democracy? did they ever take a vote on whether there are 4 laws of thermodyamics or 3?? no they didnt. Not to mention thier new defination of a "planet" is really redundant because in not naming pluto a planet they pretty much kicked out jupitar and neptune since they dont clear thier orbit either. By doing this they made a big double edged sowrd. Since pluto did techically break out of the kupier belt it should be a planet.
@johann7gohan It was not a vote about scientific evidence, it was about nomenclature. Scientists do, in fact, vote on nomenclature. And the nomenclature doesn't change scientific realities. Pluto is still Pluto.
Keep in mind some of these "dwarf planets" have some of their own "atmosphere." Pluto not a planet? it may not have its own atmosphere, but it clearly defines itself as a dwarf planet. There may not be those who agree with me, but i will always regard pluto as a planet. There isn't even a clear definition on what a planet is, so how can they not call it a planet?
Pluto is a "micro planet," but none the less, still a planet. Pluto is round, maintains its own orbit around the sun, and has three moons orbiting it. These many other objects nearby pluto, keep in mind are millions of miles away froms it, other than its moons. Pluto was thrown into the outer regions of the galaxy during the formation of the galaxy. Pluto did not get as large because it did not have as much debris around it to get large. Pluto is a solid mass, unlike some of these other planets
I dont understand why people expel the energy to get upset over this(not that this is a trivial event this is massive). Be humbled that we have a tincy bit more variety in our solar system, i am. If the earth is classified a gas giant Then be upset but this no be humbled.
@schusterlehrling - Indeed, it makes sense to classify bodies in a reasonable way. We discovered Neptune with mathematical prediction, based upon its orbital perturbation of Uranus. And we were so drunk on that "great accomplishment of the mind of man" that we set out to do it again. Didn't work. But, by god, we did finally find something we could slap a planet label on. Pluto has more prestige as the second largest (yes, second largest) dwarf planet than as the tiniest planet in our system.
Neil is like the Death Star that obliterates a planet like Pluto..kids at school are getting counseling for psychological trauma as somebody has murdered poor little Pluto..
I love this video but I am looking for a version with a little better resolution, and where the sound and video are not so out of sync. Any suggestions?
"People didn't vote on the Theory of Relativity or genetic code blah blah blah. It's unscientific." It is very scientific. Definitions can be voted on - his examples were irrelevant because they are proven facts, not the name or classification for something.
How can you let 5% of scientist vote on an issue that is "world" changing. "Definitions can be voted on" LOL....let me get 5% of the population of the world to vote that your and IDIOT! (lol) then the world can call you and idiot. Just because Pluto enters Neptunes orbit, we kick it out?...WOW PLUTO LIVES :)
Of course definitions can be voted on. They aren't definite (what a paradox) and any word technically could mean anything, since words in the dictionary are only defined by more words in the dictionary.
Pluto was always an oddball. I embrace the change. I would expect that in the future a large number of Pluto sized dwarf planets will be discovered in the Kuiper belt. Pluto isn't gone. It's the discovery of something new.
Thank GOD that Stern is is losing !!

Clyde Tobmaugh is the real Hero of Pluto and Neil Tyson became the villain of Astronomy...
Shame on you Neil Tyson trying to steal others glory..
go discover an onbject, a small Asteroid most probably if you can as you are not the man to discover a Planet like Clyde Tombaugh did.
your name will be cursed whenever Pluto's name is mentioned, live with it and die with it, you deserve it

if we come to another solar system and inhabit a binary system, how will we define those bodies? would they be considered planets?

importance to you.
The day it was declassified i was like, oh ye right,.......move on.
And some high schooled nasa employees are bragging about the label we give it.
What does such a debate cost, several thousands of dollars, is that were my tax money goes to.
And were amazed we live in a economic crisis.
such useless, acts (debate) or additions to that crisis.
nobody cares about what name we give a oversized asteroid. planet or dwarf planet.
those people that do care or even cry for

8:25 "If you don't have a definition, of course you're going to have arguments."
Um, buddy, arguments are constantly made over several terms that do have definitions as well.
Just to name a few:
Communism: equal care for everyone, or horrible dictatorship?
Music: Soft pleasant melodies, or any instrumental/vocal noise by popular artists?
Morals: traditions and culture, or business-like professionalism?
Better: healthier, or more fun?

He was not DEMOTED.
He was always a member of the happy and big KBO family, but we humans called him names and that was really, really das.
We even put a verdivt on him and tried to seperate him from his real family.
Now that he is reunited with them , he lives happily ever after!
