Is there a difference between a front somersault and a front tuck, or is it just two words for the same thing? I really know nothing about gymnastics, and I noticed the commentators say both.
@PigPenguin91 theres not really a difference... a front tuck is when you bring your knees up to your chest... a front somersault is when you just flip on your front... a front tuck is just a way of doing a front somersault... its the same with a pike... :D hope this sorta helped... i dont know a lot about gymnastics either :)
The sit spin that Lauren Mitchell did seems to be the Australian gymnasts "signature" move. It's not a bad thing, it actually shows their willingness to think outside the square. Unfortunately Australia gets overshadowed by the traditional "gymnastic" countries i.e. China, Romania, Russia and to a lesser extent, the US.

You know? I finished watching the NBC coverage for the first time since the Olympics the other night and they truly were boring these Olympics. They showed only China and the U.S. but 1 routine from Romania and 1 routine from Russia :P. They need to upgrade their coverage and do what BBC does...show OTHER countries' routine!!! Thumbs up if you're with me ;)

Brazilian Leotards are horrible. Also, the few Spanish gymnasts that competed had horrible ones too. I like the Chinese, as they always look very classic and I like the Russians as they look elegant but it all seems to be metallic and skin-tone and they don't flatter the figure.
And I agree that Barbosa's music doesn't really work.
Would anyone know - is there American coverage of this posted somewhere? I'd like to "compare and contrast" (as my high school English teachers used to say) it to the BBC coverage.
Such a strong Chinese team - their body positions are so perfect and they are so powerful in their movements. They perhaps don't have the performance and finesse of the American team, though..

She did not choke under the pressure either, she had an injury that tainted her performance The USA was only put back about a point by Alicia, which if you look at the final scores that point was still not enough to secure the gold medal. I wish people would get over it. the chinese were better that night and they proved it. And Alicia did the best she could under the circumstances. Sorry if I snapped at u

She actually chipped her teeth while training bars. If you don't believe me, look at her now. She still has the chipped tooth. Because Asian women mature slower in the face than European-native women do. Also, Asian women are on average shorter than European women.
And, Shawn doesn't look her age :/ Shawn was only 4'9 (I believe) in 2008. That's far below the average height of a regular 16/17 year old.
Finally, the Chinese girls were screened by the IOC and it has been PROVEN that they were of age. Please, stop being bitter. USA lost because China was far superior. USA is likely to lose 2012 too :)
@Gr33nkiwi Anything can happen between now and then. Romania came into 1996 as the favorite, but had a ton of injuries just prior to the Games and did not perform at their best. (Shrugs). With Nastia and Shawn back in training, I wouldn't get too cocky just yet. The U.S. is quite deep.
If you want to talk injuries look to the USA, not Russia.
Also, teams of 5 hurt USA and help Russia.
Mustafina, Grishina, and Komova could in theory go up and do the TF by themselves.
USA will need to get a very solid bar specialist. Wieber may be up to a 6.4 now, and Bross may reach a solid D score come 2012, but they need better than that to compete with the Russians.
@Gr33nkiwi Yeah I also don't think we have much hope for a gold medal, with the way things are now. I am happy actually that Russia has brought out such a strong team this year (2011). After years of just missing team glory....like a phoenix Russia will rise again :) I really want to see them do well in 2012. Now, of course I want my home country to win but, I am not so biased I can't be happy when someone else wins (who is a clearly better team)

And I agree that we lost because they were far and above superior. Most gymnasts aren't able to do that. The only two that are (or were) that come to mind are Anna Pavlova and Catalina Ponor. You only have to get your foot over your head to get credit, as far as I know.
lauren mitchell's beam was fantastic it's sad she fell, she could not get to the finals. per apparatus... but she had an unusual mount and full twist.

jade's floor music is by far the worse in the competition... i love her to bits, she's a fantastic gymnast but i hope she'll change her music in the future!
the women comentator is so annoying. she explains every single skill that the gymnast does. why cant she just talk about the gymnasts backround or training. something other than the skills that they are doing. and by the way, ilike Jade's music because its differnt.
I agree. But not only Jade's music is horrible, Diane's is pretty bad too.. Also imo the Brazilians should work on their choreography... they will be scoring much higher when they focus a little more on the aesthetics side of their floor routines. Right now there is no dancing and their routines look a bit sloppy.
your right........Diane has huge power, too much really as you literally bite your lip when shes landing cos sometimes she just comp looses it on the landings....sometimes it seems uncontrolled and then it gets sloppy, her form on some of the tumbling elements could be better maybe???

I'm completely agree with you! Unfortunately, their excellent form has not been fully appreciated and rewarded by some judges, and they are often underscored.

I agree except when she was babbling about the difference between the American and Chinese systems. I don't think she was even paying attention to what she was saying! It made no sense at all.

jade's floor music is by far the worse in the competition... i love her to bits, she's a fantastic gymnast but i hope she'll change her music in the future!

the women comentator is so annoying. she explains every single skill that the gymnast does. why cant she just talk about the gymnasts backround or training. something other than the skills that they are doing. and by the way, ilike Jade's music because its differnt.

I agree. But not only Jade's music is horrible, Diane's is pretty bad too.. Also imo the Brazilians should work on their choreography... they will be scoring much higher when they focus a little more on the aesthetics side of their floor routines. Right now there is no dancing and their routines look a bit sloppy.

your right........Diane has huge power, too much really as you literally bite your lip when shes landing cos sometimes she just comp looses it on the landings....sometimes it seems uncontrolled and then it gets sloppy, her form on some of the tumbling elements could be better maybe???

I'm completely agree with you! Unfortunately, their excellent form has not been fully appreciated and rewarded by some judges, and they are often underscored.
