They sound great with Robert, but its a different band.
It comes down between Cliff and Trujillo and take into account that you're comparing a artist to a matured. Trujillo is more bassy while Cliff's playing is usually mistaken for guitar, either way they are both great.
Jason Newstead was never adored like Cliff and Trujillo.. For good reason.
anybody who heard Rob playing with Suicidal Tendencies or Infectious Grooves knows what a skilled player he is. Jason would probably be first to admit he was not as proficient as either Rob or Cliff.
For me - the winner is Cliff, the most original and creative of the three and bearing in mind Rob has had 25 years more to develop - think how good Cliff would be now given a change in circumstances.

Cliff is what made it possible for a lot of us classically trained bassist (I'm a cellist turned bassist) to bring it to the metal arena. Jason Newsted is what made us hang our heads! Robert Trujillo is a breath of fresh air after the Newsted years! I was born in the same hospital (Battle Creek, Michigan, Community Hospital) as Jason Newsted and have met him a few times. He is a dickhead and not a very good bassist. I am very surprised that Metallica gave him the job.
Robert Trujillo has much better tone and keeps the groove and stays in the pocket in his solo as a bass player should. He's got my vote even though all 3 are great in their own respects.
With all due respect for Cliff, I believe Jason Newsted was the best bassist for Metallica. His backing vocals are kickass, while he maintains a solid bass rhythm, and headbangs like a boss.
Cliff, because he's fuckin' Cliff. The guy made Metallica work. Jason....decent bassist, plays with a pick, no knock on pick playing bassists out there, but fuck off comparing Cliff to Jason. Cliff would make Jason look like an afterthought, plus Jason has killer backing vocals. Robert is Cliff personified but with a funkier grove and method. To me, Robert personifies Cliff in style, but has to contribute musically what Cliff did.
It's like this...Cliff was so good, God had to call him to heaven to rock with him.
Metallica dug through the trenches with Cliff. Jason came in after most of the groundwork had been laid. IMHO, Jason most definitely made the right decision when he left the band. Seeing as everything they have done since like 1990 has been complete garbage, I would've left too.
Load sucked, reload sucked more, St. anger? really? Death fagnetic was barely tolerable.
What you can see here clearly is that while Jason was a hired hand, both Cliff and Robert are bassists that really carry the band. Slightly prefer Robert's version over Cliff's but that's because it really shows he is doing his own thing instead of trying to copy Cliff.
Jason grew out to be much more than a Cliff copy in later years, but unfortunately never got the place he deserved from the band, so good for him that he dared to quit!
If anyone would understand even a bit anything about Metallica. You would understand, that Jason was the best bassist they've had, especially during live performances. Cliff was second, because he was very original on writing bass lines. Rob.. he isnt bad, but he simply plays nowadays what those 2 guys have written.

Okay about these recordings you can not compare them with Cliff Burton, in years Jason grow as bas player, the new one, sorry it's to suicidal tendencies style for the metallica sound. Love trujillo with suicidal tendencies but not with metallica ...
cliff will always be the best, as far as Metallica is concerned. he just let loose on the instrument. his bass work on Anesthesia, Call of Cthulu (INCREDIBLE) and others are just unmatched. he made it his own and took it to new heights. rob trujillo does a good job of keeping the original parts the way they were, while adding in his own flavor. and jason newsted sucked. he played with a pick and pretty much just doubled the guitar parts but on a bass.
And on a side note, cliff burton inspired other artists. He may be dead, but if trujillo dies, then will he be remembered? No, metallica will find a new bassist. Unlike rob, cliff lives through the hearts of his fans, not their wallets.
Metallica became commercial because lars let it. Trujillo only supports the mainstream that metallica has become, therefore:
1. Cliff (those who say no to this are tools)
2. Jason (sure, he used a pick, but he still some great parts)
3. Trujillo (cause hes a tool who raped for whom the bell tolls, a song that was made a legend by cliff.) To say trujillo is best is a load of crap that would echo from the mouth of a typical new age metal tool.

Trujilo got charisma and a brand (as monkey) that does a concert, if he is special.
Cliff had the technique, the style and the talent. That fits for good music, but doesn't always (in some cases it does) make the special concert.

guys remember that jason played the solo in like 1986-1987 or something and rob played it in like 2003+ what if jason played it now ?.. hmm i dont think jason is a bad bass player , like if you see him play the solo in texas the cunning stunts show in 1997:O idontknow guys ,still cliff is the best. its cliffs solo. have a great day.

Oh,please....when newsted shoud up you chose the worst sound,i can`t hear nothing,but I and others know that the Newsted is great...Cliff is good bass player,but Newsted is what metallica is,he give all that energy...trujillo is...well he is not for metallica..he style is so fennsy,uhhh horrible..1. cliff will always be the best, as far as Metallica is concerned. he just let loose on the instrument. his bass work on Anesthesia, Call of Cthulu (INCREDIBLE) and others are just unmatched. he made it his own and took it to new heights. rob trujillo does a good job of keeping the original parts the way they were, while adding in his own flavor. and jason newsted sucked. he played with a pick and pretty much just doubled the guitar parts but on a bass.

And on a side note, cliff burton inspired other artists. He may be dead, but if trujillo dies, then will he be remembered? No, metallica will find a new bassist. Unlike rob, cliff lives through the hearts of his fans, not their wallets.

Metallica became commercial because lars let it. Trujillo only supports the mainstream that metallica has become, therefore:
1. Cliff (those who say no to this are tools)
2. Jason (sure, he used a pick, but he still some great parts)
3. Trujillo (cause hes a tool who raped for whom the bell tolls, a song that was made a legend by cliff.) To say trujillo is best is a load of crap that would echo from the mouth of a typical new age metal tool.

Cliff is the originator of that style and it`s obvious Robert plays the way he does because of Cliff.Playing a bass as if it were the lead part in the melody instead of the rhythm was innovative.And Justice For All would have been a better record if you could hear more of Jason`s playing on it.Jason`s the only one I`ve seen live so he`s my favorite.Cliff is a legend,but if I don`t look at it emotionally,I gotta give Robert major props for taking Cliffs style and making it even crunchier.

Who is the better player does not matter. The best music was made when Burton was in the band. Because of when I really started listening to and watching them, I will always imagine Metallica with Jason in. I kinda lost interest once Rob came into the band. Thus Cliff=Jason>Rob. Sorry wetbacks.

Los instrumento que llevan la clave son maracas, palos o campana. Los demas instrumentos crean el ritmo o cantan. En esta música el bajo hace mucho ruido y porquería. No canta ni acompaña. Los solo de bajo no son más que alboroto como el de dos cacerolas dando contra la pared. Un Percusionista afina las congas con el bajo. Aveces los tambores de le baterería se alinean también. En los ritmos tropicales, rock, HR. jazz, Metal... el bajo canta con todos los instrumentos en comparsa.

@NicholausBonaredra I think you don't 'feel' his bass. When he played, the sounds went somewhere deep inside so you could feel it. He also was a passionate of music, he knew his shit. He taught other Metallica members how to create 'the harmony of sounds'. Music meant everything to him, he didn't treat it like business, more like art. He hated commercial attitude when it came to music. And if he was alive, things like St. Anger and Lulu wouldn't ever happen. Rock In Peace, Cliff.
