  • This is has a Champlinesque Sons feel to it, initially. Finally, first Chicago song in ages that cooks. They need more of that uptempo stuff ! Love to hear Chicago do it on their own with a II or V horn break in the middle.

  • That's the old horns we grew up with. Yes very seventies Chicago. No complaints here.

  • IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT 70S SHOW

  • THATS THE 70S OLD GOOD MEMORIES HAHAHAHA

  • nice but i need more funk!

  • Chicago is supposed to be makin a new album and I heard somewhere that peter cetera is supposed to be back with them too along with jason scheff replacin bill champlin.

  • @MrIcedogg I hope you're right

  • Jason Scheff is still in the band. Bill Champlin is the one left.

  • Absolutely fantastic!!! Great harmony, instrumentals, man, I love this song!

  • Is Jason Sheff still in the group? thought he was just doing solo and making his own music...

  • a tastefully done remake. i wish chicago still played this in their shows.

  • Sorry.. this is my fave EWF song of all time... No one can sing this but Maurice... to my satisfaction, anyway... ;-)

  • one word.... WOW. Go Chicago fans. Lets get them their own hall and other bands can TRY to compare.

  • More like EWF than Chicago, too much sappy cetera influence, nothing like the original, only, real CTA.

  • Chicago needs to get rid of Tris. Its as if they are playing with a drum machine. He provides no feel to the music and completely destroyed the style Danny used to play with years ago. He is the reason I will no longer go see the band anymore live.

  • Good song, is it a new cd with this track available ?

  • david foster is a genius composer. most of the songs he composed are performed in different ways by various artists. i mean, for example, in the stone and after the love has gone are performed by earth, wind and fire and chicago

  • EWF in the Chicago mold, brilliant, sheer genius. Music at its best!! 2:12 to 2:36 is trult the Chicago touch.

  • Bill Champlin should NEVER sing! I mean seriously.

  • @klwewf Oh mY GOD: TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU> They ended up FINALLY DUMPING him and brought i Lou Pardini, a REAL TALENT! What HAPPENED to Bill Champli? He started out so GREAT, then sank!

  • I LOVE Chicago! OMG - And where the HELL is Peter Cetera? You'd think he'd show up once in a while! *smirk* With or without him, Chicago LIVES and ROCKS!

This is one of my favorite fun/romantic EWF songs and ONLY Chicago's HORNS can do this song justice!

  • I'm an old fan of Chicago...saw them in concert in '72 and '73. This song is just fine. I suppose I would have to buy a whole bunch of music I already have by them just to get this song...

  • Nice... so glad we're back to what Chicago does best. Jammin songs with great solos and power brass lines!

  • Nice, sounds like the same old Chicago we know and love!

  • This version is definitely tighter than the EWF version, but the EWF version has more soul to it. This version has a great key change however.

Ultimately a toss up between the versions, really,..... So who says white boys can't do soul :) hahahaha!!!!!

BTW I've seen both bands and they absolutely rock.

See them if you can, you will have a GREAT TIME!

  • @loocee95 You don't really think this version is tighter than the original do you?

  • Earth, Wind & Fire released this in the UK..wasn't a huge success, but it was a very avant-garde form of funk that the world wasn't prepared for. That's why EWF and Maurice White were such iconic figures of the black 1970's.

"Can't Let Go" is a classic emblem of repetitive chants, funky syncronization and powerful yet simple lyrics.

Without a doubt, one of EWF's more complex and heart-soothing anthems, and it seems as if Chicago have taken on a very apt version of it! It has my praise.

  • the only thing wrong with this song is Peter Cetera is not on it. I would have loved to hear his voice leading this cut.

  • @HeruOfKemet I love PC too but these vocals are awesome! Jason, Bill and Robert are rockin!

  • Talking about "Reviving Careers" (from 1tallguy49) - They don't need to revive anything, their concert dates in 2009/2010 were 240 + . That's something for any band. Their energy and talent keeps them on top year after year. I usually don't comment on these remarks, but I couldn't help myself with this one.

  • @Tendertrak I apprciate your remark. But 240+ dates in 2 years don't make them a success. they are enjoyable to watch, but a lot of us are tired of them playing the same old 12 songs every concert. Yes they still have the talent. We'd like to see them bring back the fusion of rock and jazz.. Not the Power Ballads. They do, do some nice love ballads..........but for crying out loud.........bring back the power sounds of the horns and rock/jazz

  • @1tallguy49 You are SO right! I have been seeing them since 95 and do feel that they could change it up a bit more at times. They have had so many great songs that I never hear them perform, or not often anyway.

  • @hrcutter Thanks for comments HR.I've been following them since 70. I'm just tired of them being a Tribute Band only to themselves. They did a christmas album a few years back that actually made them sound like the chicago of old, doing it in their style that only they can do. Now they have a new christmas cd in the works........and it makes me wonder.........will it be the same old christmas cd of old with only 3 or 4 more new carols ?

  • @1tallguy49 I liked that X-mas CD too. I hope this one is all new stuff. They already released the last one twice...and of course I got both of them.

  • @hrcutter i'd love to hear them try something Like Boston's "More Than a Feeling" with Jimmy's handiwork on the horns........or even something like Guns and Roses....."Sweet Child of Mine"......again with Jimmy using his creative imagination on writing the horn arraingments

  • @1tallguy49 They could do anything I'm sure. I liked the Stone of Sisyphus CD...did you get that one? I have the original...I hear they left at least one of the best songs off the CD when it was finally released.

  • @1tallguy49 - Hi there TG. I made a mistake. The dates were not for two years. 240 for 2009 and 245 + Australia for 2010.. Regarding the songs they play. They have played other songs from various albums, but the ticket buyers want to hear their radio hits. Good suggestion on the rock/jazz. Maybe they will.

  • I'm a diehard Chicago fan who's been extremely disappointed with the musical direction they've taken since the early '80s...but this song is SWEET, and had it come out in the seventies, it would've probably been a big hit.

  • Listen at 1:44 really near 2:15 with the horns and you can hear a little "Call On Me/Make Me Smile" influence... At 2:16 a little Beginnings. Then there is the key change at 2:50 that EWF doesn't do. Real slick key change.....

    Kool stuff.

Non musicians may not understand but this is really a 5 chord tune.

Amazing how much soul can be generated from such a "simple" progression.

  • that´s the sound! it´s their own- they should never try to change it... it´s real!

this version has the 70ies vibe back- EWF´s version has more r&b but this one is as soulful!

is this lamm and champlin singin´?

  • Guy`s - I took care of the last 200 listenings..... I CAN`T LET GOOOO !!! Outstanding .... just love that group - and always have !!

  • @loocee95 u have got to be kidding. Respects to Chicago but definitely a white version of Can't let go....if u know what i mean. But nice effort i'd download it yeah!

  • @ph1lstar

    Hahaha!

I hear ya with the white thing, and agree somewhat.

However listen to the crispness of the Chicago version.

Ignore the vocals.I know this is big, but humor me....

Listen to the breaks, percussion, big guitar solo, the key change etc.

Listen to the end. The percussion is 10000000000 percent right on.

It's really much better than EWF and I LOVE EWF!!!!!!!

  • @loocee95 I'm hearing ya, and yes I am a huge Chicago fan, however the groove that i guess only EWF were able to generate is missing here. Technically tight and brilliant but there were huge gaps of nothing (microseconds) which EWF would have filled with that groove. Have i humored you enough. But thanks for sharing your opinion. Respects

  • @ph1lstar

Just listened to the two versions back to back and yea the EWF version is more in the pocket where the Chicago version I find to be more crisp, but with stricter timing, especially the breaks. That does have the effect of killing the soul of the tune a little bit.

  • @ph1lstar I've got to agree with you here, especially in the intro. The horns just aren't funky enough in the cover. This is a very good cover, but the original is such a fantastic track in it's own right. I really like the bridge on this one not in the original, as well as a key change, they're really tight and make the song sound fresh.

  • I'm a jazz musician, huge Chicago and EWF fan and I think this one sounds better than the original.

It's amazing what can be done with 5 chords (more or less) and a great rhythm/horn section along with a super hook filled tune.

You would have to be half dead not to feel good when this tune is played.

    Great job!

Love the key change, 2:52 nice change.

    This tune absolutely bops!!!

  • I like this song much more than I thought I would! The horns remind me of the songs that got me interested in Chicago in the first place.

  • where can i get the mp3 ?

  • i love chicago (though i would probably say i love EWF more) and i cant help but shake my head because i'm hearing the original in my head...........so i would say 6/10

  • In a room full of Chicago fans - who would even dare to diagree.. but.. gotta say.. If you haven't anything to add, don't degrade yourself by releasing a cardboard box -sounding version of the masterpiece. Like all the American versions of the original european movies.. why oh why.. Since the product is less, it can only be for the fame and(!) fortune...

  • @adamtoensberg - This song was cut during the Chicago/EWF concert tour in 2009. Chicago did an EWF song, EWF did a Chicago song and they did one together. All proceeds went to charity. There was no Fame or Fortune involved..

  • This is The Sound what we want to play by CHI.

  • Erano destinati ad incontrarsi, lo si vede anche nei concerti fatti insieme, due strade parallele diverse ma con tanto groove in comune.Fantastici.

  • I gotta agree with Blaknificent. This is vintage Chicago. A blast from the past. I think if they would concentrate on new material with a beat like this instead of the slow beat rythm of Love Ballads, they could probably revive their carrers.

  • @1tallguy49 revive their careers? I got news for, aint nothing wrong with their careers, speaking from a die hard Chicago fan for many years.....

  • WOW! This is a treat a true blast from the past...I love Chicago and Earth,Wind and Fire. Thanks for posting this is great!!

  • Not bad but Bill's hardly on there, just abit of the verse, It's a shocker he was "let go" from the band via E-mail, if you like him or not he helped give Chicago a new life after Kath, He will be missed, I still miss Dawayne Bailey's flashy guitar solo's.

  • i love those guys, since i was 9. thanks for sharing.

  • Excellent

  • Love this new music, however I heard Bill wasnt with the band anymore is that true and if so why?

  • @atp1962 Bill left to concentrate on his solo work. He put out a CD last year and has been touring with The Sons Of Champlain all summer.

  • vocal harmonies are particularly interesting on this track. The whole thing is very polished.

  • They need to go back to this style of playing!

  • get OUT of here, what a decent cover of one of my favorite EWF songs

  • @1980Triumph , Well Said!!!

  • @1980Triumph Guess you didnt know that some of the members of Chicago wrote some of the EWF songs.... Jason Scheff actually wrote a song or two of Boz Scaggs songs... Many talents these guys have. Everywhere you listen, there they are. :)

  • @galaxian00

I don't recall Chicago writing any EWF songs, what are they?

  • @1980Triumph Bill Champlin co-wrote After the Love is Gone.

  • @TheNiggamortis

Bill is one, not "some" as you mentioned.

  • wOw!!! Yahhhhh.

  • Pankow and Lamm are Gods.

  • I absolutely love this version. The horns are incredible.. harmonies are just "on". I can hear each voice clearly. Just a fabulous song.. I want more!

  • Fantastic cover of the Original by Maurice & Co. back in 1979, I find it difficult comparing both versions in terms of which is the best. I tend to give them each a respective place in my musical mind.

    Dave

  • great mastering !!! good old school !!!

  • Sounds great!!

  • Awesome!!!

  • GREAT GOOD MUSIC !!!!!!

  • This is one of the better covers of this song I've heard. Kudos to Chicago and I hope they do more =)

    - Gitcom

  • Bill being gone from Chicago is really going to suck :(

  • Umm...I believe, no, I know that the title of this song is "I Can't Let Go".....NOT "I Can't Let YOU Go!

    EWF Forever...

    Signed, Devoted Spirit

  • Nothing can beat the ORIGINAL Earth Wind & Fire version from 1979! This sounds rushed together. No soul whatsoever.

  • This song is alright.. saw them last night in Portland OR. . E,W&, F totally smoked Chicago in their cover of Wishing You Were Here both the live and recorded versions. One of the sexiest songs I've heard live in a long, long, long time. Concert was fun though. Yes I must agree with the Peter Cetera comments. He was not my favorite but his vocals were definitely missed by me.

  • awesome!

love the saturday in the park tribute at 1:21 <3

  • Someone posted "Jason's voice gets lost in the mix"...and that's a bad thing? It should happen more often, especially on Chicago songs. This song is ruined at the end 3:28.

  • Sounds more Steely Dan than EW&F.

  • That's it ! Sounds like "Steely Dan " big time

  • the horns do, not the vocals

  • Sounds like Chicago to me.

  • Would have loved to have heard just Bill doing lead vocals on this -- he makes the song !

  • Hey newEnglandpatriot I´m a huge Chicago fan, I think they're one of the greatest Bands Ever but... I agree, they're a third age band, the best they can do is what's shown here, I mean STUDIO RECORDING, like this, It's really great!! Two years ago, in a friend's junction we commented how we'd like Chicago to make covers of some good songs like this, but in the CTA style. Now they're doing it!

    They read our minds!!

PS: Have you heard "Brass Transit" band?, they're here in youtube.

  • This is not new; EWF already did this back in like 79' or 80' but this sounds just as good. Love both groups!!!!!

  • I saw these guys play along with EW&F in Boston on June 16th. Jason's voice gets lost in the mix. Tris Imboden still has a stand in. Jimmy Pankow played unlike last year. Having Jimmy play piano on "Color my world" and Lee, yes LEE sing Colour My World was daring. It is tough listening to Keith sing "if you leave me now "and "Old Days". Peter Cetera's they are not. Bill Chaplin is about ready for a walker with tennis balls. EW and F played "Wishing you were here" I wish Terry was still alive

  • Good points. Although Lee singing any of Terry's parts is fine, it's time that the originals sucked it up and invited Peter back for a tour (final?) or at least for a few special dates. Keith is a back up singer, not capable of lead on Cetera tunes and Scheff's voice is shot. And enough crap with fill in drummers (Tris included) and get Chicago's heart and soul back with the great Danny Seraphine at the helm. Then, wake Bill up behind the B-3 and the real Chicago is ready to rock again.

  • I saw these guys in Boston on Tuesday Night June 16 th. Great show ,but they are showing their age. Jimmy Pankow played keyboards during Colour My World and Lee sang it ????I guess RL needed a break. Old Days sung by Keith is very Karaoke like. Someone get Bill a walker with tennis balls. Where is Tris? I could brought my Sticks. I am next to Boston University yet here is EW&F and I count about 6 African Americans ????? in attendance?

Jason's vocals are erratic and get lost in the mix.

  • Sounds like it could have been a tune from "Hot Streets".

  • That's it !!! Da fliegt das Blech weg !!!

  • yeahh!!!!
