The Koreans got the western NES but badged Comboy and European PAL SNES with both Comboy and western Super Nintendo logo on it but on the Korean Wii Virtual console has the Japanese Famicom and Super Famicom badges/logo's. Dos this cause mass confusion with the older generation.
Keep in mind that Koreans generally hated the Japanese at the time. A Japanese-looking system would not sell well at all, so they sold the American design instead.
Well, the reason the NES was designed the way it was (in part) was to disassociate itself from the top-loading Atari, etc. consoles that produced lots of low quality games. Putting that little flap and making you push the game in (more technically flawed than top-loaders) was supposed to emulate the VCR, to make it seem more like a luxury item than the Ataris were.
I already knew that. The reason why the NES design was used in Korea is because Koreans hated the Japanese. The reason why it was Hyundai branded is because Hyundai is a Korean company, while Nintendo is Japanese (which was already a problem, as I explained).
The reason the design was used in the US is because it did look like a VCR or a similar device. You are right, they didn't want to be associated with video games, which were low in popularity in 1984 and 1985.
Actually, this is a commercial for the NES in Korea. The NES was called the Comboy (콤보이) and was distributed by Hyundai (현대) because of the legislation banning Japanese imports. The Gameboy in Korea was called the Mini Comboy (미니콤보이).
The interesting part of all of this is that the first Nintendo system released in Korea branded as a Nintendo system is the DS, therefore they call the Nintendo DS just "Nintendo," similar to how those in the US often call the NES just "Nintendo."
this is a true thing that happens!itsnot a chain letter!its kinda scary at firstbut it really works!!pastethis message into 3 comments and press ALT F1 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!its soo wierd
By the way, is that game machine illegally copied from original (Japanese) one? or they just pretend their original products? I guess it is the same as HONDA motorbike (made in Korea) which I saw south-east asia...
I found a korean gameboy in the trash once.

I'm not sure how the Koreans would know it was the Japanese-style model in 1988. I mean, if they thought Mario was Korean, haha...
amadeusyaoi 1 year ago
They would know. Its styling is very Japanese, while the western NES's styling is American.
Plus, they could have thought Mario was an American character. From official artwork, that wouldn't be that hard to mistake.

funny thing is that Korea banned any japanese products (more like their culture) in korea til 1998.
Thats why it isn't "gameboy" it's HYUNDAI COMBOY to avoid any patents.

No, Hyundai obtained licenses from Nintendo to reproduce them in South Korea but why they decided to rename it as "Comboy" is way beyond me.
gaijinblow 5 years ago
That's Computer Boy, like the Famicom is Family Computer (or konpyuta). What's wrong with it?
Maybe "Comboy" sounds closer to their language too.

aftershock14520 5 years ago
I thought the Japanese Family Computer (Famicom) looked way better ;P But I guess one look at that Japanese-looking Famicom the Koreans would
1) smash the sets with hammers, taekwondo kicks and punches
2) storm and fire-bomb the stores selling these sets
3) student and civilian protests with huge banners written in Korean (yeah they dumped our Chinese characters too)
SeventhSun 5 years ago
4) Revert to singing nationalist tunes and watching Korean nationalist movies
5) More Japanese bashing by Korean martial artists will feed in their local movie system
It's like with that they could smell Japan and they go crazy, thus the Japanese had to use the Western-looking NES to make their won (Korean currency)
SeventhSun 5 years ago
Was just posting for fun. Nothing against Koreans but their nationalism and general anti-Japanese sentiments are quite well-known by everyone.

why do they insist on having dancing in all of their commericals in asia/
