@QwE3rtzZ I didn't know John Tunstall til I looked him up in Wikipedia and it doesn't mention him having been in Oklahoma. Pictured at that location in the video is the Washita Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma....so I'd say it was not the place he was killed.
This song is actually in a hateful spite against the west for the east. There was a woman and a husband who became rich ranching in the western Canadian plains. When the husband was still young and rich he died. The woman always hated the west and selfishly moved east saying, "Bury me not on the lone prairie."In her absence the cows, bulls, and horses all died of starvation.
I wish to move to a ranch one day, even though im British my family have got alot of Western past! :D including a passed down Winchester Rifle from my great great great great grandfather who was in a Gang. It has its own unique patterns including his name and a quote of. :- Love of my life, Forgive me.
It's not good that many of us heard this wonderful song from a video game. But it is very good the fact that we actually heard it... Especially for us non Americans. Great video, great song, plain and simple.
I didn't even know this song was in RDR (never saw that movie before). But it is a very beautiful song on its own. It really has emotion in the lyrics, very meaningful.
I was thought this song when I was about 11. It's a nice but sad song. I had forgotten about it, and now after 24 years I hear this version and this is how I pictured the song in my minds eye at the time (if that makes sence :)
@PrivateFlanky nahhh as more depressing because it's bury me not on the lone prairie, as meaning somebody just died so i guess its suppose to be depressing
@Hitmanfan12222 uh, my comment is spam, um okayy... And maybe u would know what Oklahoma is about if you would actually get ur ass of the couch and go west of oklahoma, ur nerdy ass belongs in pennsylvania or some other state..
Nostalgic. song made more so with your treatment of b/w photos. I always thought it so sad the young man was buried where he didn't want to be. There is another song with the opposite request that I thought just as poignant as that cowboy wanted to be buried on the prairie.
@LiteSydeJamez O Carry Me Back to the Lone Prairie. Sorry I couldn't remember the name of the song at my earlier post. My favorite version of this song is Gene Autry with Mary Lee singing at his side. I always liked both singers, but something happens when their voices blend together to make a song's tone change...at least to my ears I love both of these songs. Both about death, but one mournful and poignant, the other lighter and receptive to the inevitable and content. Irony, eh?
@cman977 the one in Red dead was more dramatic but this one is more closer to how the song was meant to be sung in :) but other then that Red dead is sick!
@cman977 I guess it's a matter of taste. But red dead redemption is not to mine. LOL. Even my computer didn't like it as it froze and I had to reboot.
@LadyShesu It is a matter of taste. I listened to RDR version & didn't finish it---just wasn't to my taste. But that's okay....everybody can choose what suits them.
@HowdyDG Red Dead Redemption's version is the shock you feel after almost becoming John,in a way, then when you hear the deeper, slower version of this song you feel like a part of you has died and the experience will never be the same no matter how many times you play and thats why so many know this sad, yet good song.
@BloodDiamonds1000 snicker...I can see where you might think that...but as the computer and I were in agreement about the song being played at the time....I didn't really care. LOL.
damn, This makes me think that it would have been good if whole west wouldn't got civilized. I wish I could have been born there to live like cowboys did.
@Vinny513 Nice! I first heard this as a QUITE different version in The Wacky Wabbit (1942), a Bugs Bunny cartoon! Bugs sings it as he buries Fudd in a hole.
Wow i don't know if anyone noticed the coincidences of this video and the ending of the game Red Dead Redemption. Came across this because this song is actually used in the game. It looks as though the Beecher's Hope is directly modeled after this area. The similarities are unparalleled.
@Tcreavis Beautiful pics - I have always wanted to visit...... PS I am from Liverpool in the UK....I will swap you...you come and live in Liverpool and I will live in Oklahoma :-)
@Tcreavis yeah me too i live in texas about 5 miles from the oklahoma border and my dad lives in oklahoma so this just looks like stuff i see in the car everyday
the first time I heard the song was 35 years ago... thanks to youtube I found it again.... am I right when thinking the song was used in one of the movies? Does anyone know which movie was that?
Thanks! Yes, I put everything in black & white, like you say, for more of a historical "period" look. Some of the photos were vivid summer colors, some bleak winter, and to combine them seemed to distract from the song---so I leveled the color field--so to speak.
I like it! It seems that you were going for the look of the old B&W historical photos or cowboy movies, but I think I would like it even better in color.
I still prefer the version in Red Dead Redemption.

It sounds too happy, compared to William Elliot Whitmore. Also, his lyrics we're better. But still, it's still a great song.
