Outrageous the fact that when I started reading my first five minutes with this gadget it froze, stop working. A bad quality product, slow processing, weak contrast. Not expecting an answer because it seems the support is equal to the product, no information about problems with the product.
Wow. This seemed like a slanted review! He was, uh, pissed at the little Cooler.
I mean - his ending was almost angry. I thought he was going to throw it across the library.
And yeah - saying it was "made in Taiwan" like - it was an issue. First, almost everything electronic we have is made in Asia and second, they are obviously better at it than most.
This piece was very UN-COOLER in more ways than one.
I bought cool-er in Pretoria South Africa, was batteling all evening to force him to read CYRILIC text -no success,,,,HUGE DISSAPPOINTMENT.Next day took it back to the shop.Another thing; If battery dies all device is dead,,,,,,$400 down the drain-NO SUPPORT!!!!! You have to send it for repaire.............
David, I'm sure there were reasons to beat on the Cool-Er, but some of your criticisms are pathetic.
PDF functionality is a boon. The small text is because you loaded a pdf which wasn't optimized for the screen size. It's not like having that functionality is a drawback.
And wtf is wrong with Taiwan?
I think the aesthetics involved in this thing are better than the Amazon chunk.
That "chincy" dig at Taiwan was totally uncalled for. Doesn't he know that the bulk of consumer electronics are manufactured in Taiwan. They run the gamut of high-end to disposable. Reminds me of the same prejudice that Doc Brown from Back to the Future had against Japanese goods.
Why does everyone who review the Cool-ER state it is problem you have to download books via a PC. Do they not know books (which it replaces) are not wirless download machines? you can store 5gb which is a lot of books. And the bookstore does not have Harry Potter? You can use any PDF book so there are lots of sites offering lots of books. I wanted something small and light to replace books when I travel. This does the job. and it has pretty colours
I'd like to buy an ereader. Having seen that a Cool-ER and Sony E-reader are available in a nearby shop, I started reading reviews of both devices and watched videos of them both in action. The guy in this video is giving the same information that other reviews of the Cool-ER are, i.e. it's cheap, awkward to use and feature-light. The Sony and Amazon offerings are too expensive and restrictive for me, therefore, I'll wait until prices, features and DRM are more attractive.
I have never thought that any NY Times columnist wants to be tech savvy but at the same time can be so ignorant and unprofessional. Kindle is also made in Taiwan. So do iphone, ipod, and playstation. Please, someone tells David Pogue to read more newspapers (perhaps WSJ), instead of writing and broadcasting on youtube.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows isn't available in Amazon's ebook store either. JK Rowling has stated she's against allowing her books to be sold in digital form.

I noticed that little dig at Taiwan. I can't believe this review came from a New York Times journalist and passed inspection!

Many companies in Taiwan make good products. The tone generalizing and suggesting the otherwise is unfair and unfriendly, if not also discriminative.

Especially seeing as the kindle is made in China, hardly a location well known for high technology and reliable quality.

About changing the text size and 16 button presses- you could just use the + and minus (volume) button on the right side...

Damn ridiculous ignorant journalist!!!
Your lovely iPhone and Kindle are made where? US, Irak? No, they are made also in Taiwan/China.
The whole video was clearly "paid" by some giant famous online seller to disregard this amazing e-book reader.
I bought one Cool-er, it works very well to read books. It's much lighter and smaller than the Kindle locked crap and Sony readers.
