Most cars run rich with simple air mods (intake, header, etc) unless they're tuned. Removing the cat on a car with a rich fuel mix will usually result in some flames escaping the exhaust manifold.

In regard to popping flames without engine mods, Rotaries are nothing special. Mazda just took care of the excess oil/fuel burning for ya! :) I respect rotaries (I have a few friends with FC's and FD's). But, yes, they are a horribly inefficient (and still evolving) design.

@seansskyline rotary motors are actually pretty good. reliability isn't that great though. You can produce a lot of hp out of a small rotary, plus they are high compression, lightweight, and high revving. Not trying to start shit, just stating the facts

hey i just bought one of these is it normal for an rx8 to back fire when reved up like that b/c mine did when i reved it up real hi in the drive way but i have stock exhaust and have you ever been redline shifting and the engine light come on? or is it b/c i missed a shift up real bad (cus im still getting used to the car i know i suck lol) please help thanks

Yes it's normal for rotary engine to back fire. They tred to be rich on fuel.

If you remove the catalytic, 1' of flame can be achive.

When you hit the rev limit the needle will turn red and a beeb noise.
