Dan had quite a few harder rocking songs like this, but they are relatively unknown next to his softer more popular material. Try "Face The Fire," "She Don't Look Back," and "The Spirit Trail" and you'll see that Dan could rock with the best of 'em!
One of the best songs of the 80's. And Dan is Playing a Gretsch White Falcon guitar How cool is that. RIP Dan thank you for sharing your music with us.
You have to give credit and respect to Dan for temporarily putting away the acoustic guitar and just wanting to rocking out here!!!! I love this tune as well as his ballads. Very underappreciated storyteller and musician.
Hope you are soaring with the eagles and the angels, Dan. Rest in peace.
This work stands out for me as being so unbelievably uncharacteristic of his work. I recall being blown away by his hard rockin'. I bought the album, but the piece was a one-off. Did he just get baked one day and decided to let his freak flag fly?
@pinz2022 --Good question! I really don't know the answer, however, I can respect Dan for trying to show a different side of himself without changing his style. When you listen to this tune, you realize that even though the amp is turned up, Dan's trademark melodies, heartfelt sentiments and integrity are still there.
even dan fogelberg can rock the cowbell! how did this one miss the mainstream rock charts? he had a few other charting singles on there but this one seems to fit the 80s mainstream rock charts demands the best
I listened to this song over and over again when I was profoundly in-love with someone who never knew my feelings. When I first found this song on You Tube my heart leaped for joy!
I once heard that,"A songwriter really needs no inscription on his tombstone...ALL his lyrics stand as his testomony of life..." Dan Fogelberg, Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Richie Valens...if there's a Rock "N" Roll heaven...you know they got a hellova good Band!
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Dan you are so missed, and i hope your smiling up there with jimmy, moon, Jim Janice and all the other greats. rest now Dan your one of the best ,we miss you . thanks for the tunes you left us with, god bless you..
It's more content than any new music I have seen... Eminem rails about his recovery & taking care of his family priority....Lady Gaga says she is a free b*tch. I do find Dan's love songs always a bit melancholy, even this portrays the misunderstanding of love clues. Michael Buble is romantic, but very pop-simplistic. Dan is one of a kind & well suited to the time. Thank you Dan... for your talent & we are the better for being able to receive your musical gifts!
@thepianocoach Dan Fogelberg is from Peoria, not Champaign (thanks for spelling it right, BTW!). There was a rumor that the encounter with the ex (Same Auld Lang Syne) happened at the Eisner's on Green Street (my neighborhood grocery) in Champaign, but it actually happened at a convenient store in Peoria.
In addition to being a great songwriter and vocalist, the guy is SO underrated as a guitarist and muscian. He is the master of the hook-laden lead guitar. This song is a perfect example. The lead has so many subtle, but incredible nuances, it just leaves you very satified. The same with Face the Fire, off the top of my head.
Rolling Stone reviewed this album when it came out and only gave it one star out of five! They just murdered it! Already a longtime fan, I bought it anyway, and I played the hell out of it. What do critics know anyway?
The sad irony is the very technology (Youtube, free downloads, the net in general) that allows us to enjoy this video will preclude the emergence of another Dan Fogelberg)...
I first discovered the legend that is Dan Fogelburg when i was rooting through mum's old LP's (Windows and Walls) and ever since then i have been hooked!!! A true vocal master!!!!
Joe Vitale's book "Backstage Pass" just recommended this video (of course he's in it ) with our beloved Dan! He told how much fun it was to do and dress in "white" which is suppose to represent "Love". Thanks! Michelle :)
Thank you so much for posting/sharing. Dan's music will always live on in my heart, mind & soul. I've listened to him from his beginning album to sorrowfully his last. Thank you Dan for the gift of your incredible songwriting~all of the instruments you played so perfectly & your one of a kind voice. I've passed on Dan's music to an awesome 8 yr old who loves him as I did the 1st time she heard him. Hopefully she will pass him on to yet a 3rd generation. You are irreplaceable & oh so missed.
i remember we half-laughed about dan goin' van halen (heckuva good solo, huh?) but nobody could deny this was a great bit of 1984 radio candy! awesome name by the way, buffalocrotch!
Musically speaking, we can hope someone else will follow in Dan's footsteps. However, no one will ever fill his sandals. Rest in peace Dan, and thanks so much for your great music that will live on forever!
Dan Fogelberg is still alive. I guess he did more than love ballads. I saw him in Wallingford, Ct. What a great, great show it was. So many dirtbags live and this wonderfully talented guy checks out. He was a pro's pro.
I remember seeing this video over 20 years ago and enjoying the song very much. I found a lot of meaning and depth in it. What Dan sings about is more than just the language of love. He'll be missed.
Hardly seems possible it's been a year today. Would that you were at your ranch in Pagosa Springs tonight, thinking about how you were going to shovel out from all this snow, putting another log on the fire, and making music.
Thank you for the music Dan. There's no one like you.
the songs of the 80s are the best this brings out the meaning of the song old time rock and roll todays music dont have the same soul lol plus todays music too much computer no band lol
Another one of Dan's powerful songs - and should have been called the "Anthem for Love" - after 26 years of marriage this song says it all for me!! No one will replace Dan, his legacy will remain for eternity
Dan Fogelberg was one of the most versatile in the music business as this video demonstrates and was a master at such a wide variety of styles. Too bad the world at large only heard one side, his mellow ballads, on the radio because there was so much more to this artist.
I agree! I love the part at 1:00 where he is walking in time with the tune. Also, the VERY END where his eyebrows lift. What fun he is! What a loss to us. Thank goodness we have this video so we can keep "seeing" him. RIP
Saw him in Tampa in 1984, was blown away by his musicianship and stage presence! And he is truly one of the greatest songwriters of his time. So sorry to hear of his passing-RIP.
Definitely one of Dan's best. Why?...........Because they never play it on the radio! They always play "Rhythm Of The Rain." It's still a great song though. Can anyone download another favorite, "Innocent Age" please.
I am 99.9% that is Joe Vitale on drums.I actually googled him and saw some old photo's. He is one heck of a drummer. He has played with some of the greats in music. Here is some trivia. In the very late 80's after the High Country Snows album. Dan shaved off his trademark beard, and went some what unnoticed and joined Joe Vitale and others in a band named Frankie and the Aliens. They played around in bars in Colorado. How cool, would that been,to seen that? Lucky patrons!!!
this is so 80's :) Dan is the best... this white guitar was his pride and joy.. forgot the name/brand but know it is very rare and he spoke of his fondness of it quite often.!! thanks for the video... he is missed!!
Is that Mike Hanna on keyboards and piano? It looks like it could be. The only thing that gives me any indication, Mike can't stand still while performing. He just bops the entire time when he performs on stage with Dan. The studio recording, Joe Vitale, drums. Kenny Passarelli, bass. Mike Hanna piano, organ. Timothy B Schmidt(The Eagles) lend his vocals for harmony.
It could be Joe Vitale. He played on many DF studio recordings. He did back him on this song in the studio. I have never seen him, so I am just guessing.
I'm pretty sure it's Michael Botts on drums in this video. An awesome drummer who is also missed. He passed away in 2005. Hopefully him and Dan are now in a great jam session together. BB in FL.
He can play the s---out of a guitar!!It's very sad, that he never received much recognition for his guitar abilities.I always thought that Bonnie Raitt was the best slide guitarist around, until I saw him do a song from the Greetings From the West dvd. He was awesome!! What a talent, I am so in awe of what he is able to do. He will be so missed by many.
The song "Phoenix" is an overlooked guitar raveup from him, too. That is a lovely Gretsch White Penguin he's playing in this video. Rare, too--I saw it for sale elsewhere on the net for $80K.
Phil Chen from Rod Stewart's band in the '70's and Eddie Van Halen/Brian May's Star Fleet Project. Funny that is the same guy that plays the the ripping slapping/popping breakdown on "Hot Legs"! Dan was also a master at Delta blues...he was amazing!
That bass player DOES mean it--looks like Kenny Passarelli and Joe LaLa on percussion..Dan used to play with the best--Russ Kunkel..Tim Weisberg. I don't know what Dan believed but someone with his talent instrumentally, vocally, lyrically and as a composer and arranger proves there is a God. People with that much talent don't evolve--God makes them that talented.
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that it's Michael Botts on drums. Sadly he passed away a few years ago and also missed-he also did some tours with Dan and posted a tour diary that you can read on the DF site. Filled with great stories of being on the road. Hugs to all. BB in FL
I read your comment the day Dan died. Milton456 and just want to say: Grow up. I have a friend that has prostate cancer and I am STILL a big fan of Dan.
His wonderful music stands for itself. On his website someone wrote "it is hard to imagine heaven, without Dan there". So very true. To the Morning (from Home Free) may very well be the most beautiful song ever written and recorded...if you have not listened to it, do. Dan wrote and recorded it at either 17 or 18 yrs old...what a magical talent
RIP Dan.......I was disappointed that he didn't make more videos in his career, cuz he looked like he had fun doing this one at least! Guess he didn't think it was really necessary.........he let his great music speak for itself.
I also long for more videos of Dan's. Funny, I always thought there would be more time to see him in concert. I took for granted that such an amazingly talented and beautiful soul would always be around making music.
I second your comment Iryshgyrl. To be able to see him in concert just one more time, man...but at least we still have all his songs, and these wonderful videos. Thanks to all that posted them.
I love this video! It's great to see Dan so upbeat and having fun. I think that people have had a misconception that he was this very serious, melancholy person. From what I understand, the opposite is true, he was a truly happy and well-adjusted individual who used all of his gifts to their full potential. I love that little eyebrow thing at the end! Thanks for sharing your amazing gifts with us, Dan! RIP
My Dan favorites: #5 - Lonely In Love #4 - this song #3 - Face The Fire #2 - The power Of Gold (with Tim Weisberg) #1 - Love Gone By. Mostly known for his ballads, Dan could really rip it up on the guitar - that's the side of him I liked most. I had no idea he had prostate cancer.
Truly a great loss! I can remember doing my term papers in the 80's listening to tapes of DF until the early hours of the morning. When I came out to California, in 1985 it was the first concert I saw a the old Irvine Meadows - Such a long time ago but just yesterday really - Take care my memories of yesterday - may God be with you! RJ
I haven't heard this song since the 80's...but it all came back with one listen. It was a great time in my life...thanks for being part of my soundtrack Dan! RIP!
Kenny Pasarelli is a great bass player, but he looks like a complete moron in this video.

I always liked this song.
As well as a genius songwriter and lyricist, Dan was a hell of a guitar player. He can play the shit out of a guitar.
We miss you, brother.

Great uplifing tune from DF!!! What a great lyricists. I have to think the wink at the end was DF saying, Something differnet, hope you enjoy.

You can never have too much cowbell.

Phil Chen from Rod Stewart's band in the '70's and Eddie Van Halen/Brian May's Star Fleet Project. Funny that is the same guy that plays the the ripping slapping/popping breakdown on "Hot Legs"! Dan was also a master at Delta blues...he was amazing!
garbeaj 4 years ago
I am so racist...I was wrong:that ain't Phil Chen,it is another Asian session bassist:)

You are funny.

On the album, Joe Vitale played drums. Joe Lala played cowbell & tamborine.

I love this song and video! Dan's really enjoying himself in this one. God bless him and thank him for his love and poetry!

People with that much talent don't evolve--God makes them that talented.
dcorebass 4 years ago 7

IryshGyrl 4 years ago 4
I second your comment Iryshgyrl. To be able to see him in concert just one more time, man...but at least we still have all his songs, and these wonderful videos. Thanks to all that posted them.
becster1964 4 years ago 4
