parallax simulates the bumps in the surface. And that means you wont be seeing the lowest bump, when you get the higest in front of you. Although its all flat! Parallax is pretty much more advanced than normal mapping.
@ennazk It's a particle effect. An object (in this case, a sprite) is spawned, propelled in a direction, and goes away after a while. Same with the smoke.
Particle Emitter... look up a popular design pattern when using them called the "Flyleaf" design. Using that approach, you'll be able to push more particles on-screen for more awesome visuals...
This demo was awesome. I updated the code for XNA 4.0, just left out the particles. It's in my blog, check out the link in my channel!
