It shows you the truth of your sins and fears and through that, you either grow stronger, be consumed by it, or give up on it and yourself. After the ordeal, you find self-revelation and internal paradise.

James did one of the three (depending on the ending), Eddie was consumed by it, and Angela gave up on herself because of the truth.

If your wanting to get into the series, I'd suggest just the first 3 or 4 (after 4 the original developers disbanded) and ever since, they've been average. I'd say start off with the first, 3 (DIRECT SEQUEL to 1), 4 and then 2. The series fell apart after the original developers left and it's been like this ever since, Downpour's the newest entry coming out and it looks decent though I'm not getting my hopes up..
