  • Does anyone know what song this is?

  • @Autocris10 The song is called "The Unfortunate Lad". It's a traditional English folk song whose melody is the same as another English song called Spanish Ladies. There's a "traditional" (quotation marks because it was derived from the English song) American version known as The Streets of Laredo (a.k.a Cowboy's Lament) that Johnny Cash does a great version of, and another called the St. James Infirmary Blues which is a Bourbon Street classic in N.O

  • thanks for knowin' what you know. : )

  • deadwood the themepark, like dollywood only not crappy. take a walk down maine st and visit the world famous gym saloon for some refreshment, or try your luck inside the luxurious bella union. prospect for untold riches in the deadwood hills and pan for gold in catfish creek. shoppers can visit bulloch and star for souvenirs and after a long day e.b farnumbs hotel awaits your every need. you may get shot, but thats half the fun ya loopy cunts.

  • The real Al Swearengen would laugh his ass off at this depiction...Swearengen died alone, penniless in a box car at a railroad. Thank God HBO gave him some humanity.

  • i like to imagine that Al used to perform in Langrishe's show way back before he opened The Gem..not as an actor, but maybe in something similar to the talent show..but i agree with a lot of you that say he didn't go out there that night because he now has a certain reputation to keep in Deadwood

  • He WANTED to be in the bloody talent show! He refused because he FELT it would maintain a certain image.

God I can relate to that at least.

    Yes goatboyrising..Unfortunate Rake....great call!

  • "He WANTED to be in the bloody talent show! He refused because he FELT it would maintain a certain image."

this comment is exactly right, i think..

Al is NOT to be laughed at or taken lightly.

do so at your own risk (of being gutted, cocksucker! :P )!!

  • H.B.O DUMB FUCKS

  • as i've said many times before,i'd work for al...this was a true jewel of a scene...damn i miss this show!!!!! rfw

  • Too bad Al didn't go to the talent show. He might have won it with that sad tune.

    Fuck I miss this show.

    Thanks for posting.

  • thank you, people down yonder who provided song titles and meanings. this character is so full of nuance and subtlety; i thought any major deadwood geek (i.e. me) might gobble it up for the sake of contrast.

dear person down yonder who ordered that i watch his fave old westerns, my, you're pushy. and kinda aggro. what's that about? i'd just said westerns weren't really my deal. : )

  • how many seasons were there i watched three

  • That's all there was. More's the pity.

  • I know this song as "The Unfortunate Rake." Ian McShane is the best.

  • I think this is the only scene uploaded on YouTube that doesn't have Al swearing. . .lol Kinda rare.

  • This is an English folksong more commonly sung to the tune of "Streets of Laredo". The Old Blind Dogs do a rendition entitled "Pills of White Mercury". It is about syphilis and the Lock Hospital in London.

  • What song is this anyway?

  • amazing program, but whats more amazing is this is the longest part of the entire series without the words "fuck" or "cocksucker" being said....

you cocksuckers have gottas fucking love that!!!!...........lol

  • i love the part before the talent show when some prick walks in with the lumber balance n al be like GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE OR I'LL CUT YOUR FUCKIN THROAT!! lol... for his sake it was a good idea not to be in that talent show

  • if you think about it.....this series was and is better than any western movie ive ever seen minus,,,the good the bad and the ugly series (all 3 ) and maybe 2 of sam peckinpaws but after that this is the shit

  • i don't even have an interest in westerns (the exception that proves the rule would be the unforgiven) but what i can say is that this series is art on every level; writing, casting, production value, photographic direction, etc. it's rare to find such talent and commitment in film, much less in television.

  • well fucking put

  • sit your ass down and watch sergio leone's 1968 masterpiece Once upon a time in the west, with Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, and Jason Robarbs....maybe you change your tune after that. Ennio Moriconne does the score as in the good the bad and the ugly, then tell me about cinematography, writing, casting, and yes, i do think deadwood is the best tv program of all time......

  • To agree with another writer, well fucking put!!

  • yeah, great, great

  • I loved the scene. Al really wanted to get into the talent show but could never afford to show any kind of soft side openly.

  • Al's...well, what can I say about him...eh, he's fuckin' nuts!

  • he's my favorite. : )

  • SO YOU WANna be his cocksucker?
