this episode did make me wonder if the house you'd lived in for the majority of years of ur life embodied a person, i wonder if u would feel an emotional connection, but i really felt the doctor's emotion when he started crying when the tardis had to leave the woman
Ha the doctors wife was my favorite of them sll til the end....I wish the scene where they go to rebuild the TARDIS and they cant find anything but trash until she turns off the chameleon drive was still there. I was really hoping when he got the box that it meant it was an actual timelord alive. Hopes then expertly dashed.
I wasn't going 2 post again, but had to mention that it seems there is bad blood between Chris E. & the Who crew,so,sadly I think the only way we will c CE back as the Doctor wil be in pictures or flashbacks, whereas I think DT would jump at the chance to actually reprise the role. And TDW was a good ep., but I liked V&TD MUCH more. That ep. just tears me up, esp. the end with the song that's playing & they discover he still killed himself, but the paintings showed the small changes. 1derful.
Ro, you covered the bases pretty good in your review. BUT-I tuned in 2c what the title claimed: 11 as a married man. NOT HAPPY 2b mislead. Am ashamed 2b shallow, but I also think if the TARDIS was 2b embodied as a woman we could c, she would 've been WAY prettier than the woman n the ep. And I know it was a brief hallucination, but Rory dead AGAIN? ENUFF already! 2 give cred, the hallucinations were pretty creepy. So much more 2 comment on, but not enuff alloted character usage. Will miss A & R.
I loved seeing the old control room. Eleven's era is so far separated from Nine and Ten, it was nice having that little reminder that this is still the same series.

I had noticed in the trailers that we were going back on the 9/10 TARDIS set, so I was kind of expecting David or Chris to appear. And when they didn't that was kind of a bummer. Don't get me wrong, I think Matt is a wonderful Doctor, but sometimes I do miss Chris and David. I wasn't super enthusiastic about this episode. I know it was supposed to be emotional, especially with the end, but I didn't really feel it. Still good fun and I plan to watch again so maybe i will come to love it more.
The TARDIS reminded me of Helena Bonham Carter as well, which is good cause she's one of my favourite actresses :) I really liked the style of this whole episode, I might have to re-watch it several times!
I did like the episode, however I would have liked to see the control room from Hartnull. I think it would have been more poetic since the Dr. and the T.A.R.D.I.S. were talking about there first meeting.
I totally see your DWJ reference (and you just reminded me how awesome she was and now I have to go do some re-reading). I also LOVED this episode. I liked that it was fun but not gimmicky. And it had great depth, which I felt lacking last week. The Doctor-Tardis relationship was wonderfully depicted.
Neil Gaiman is seriously one of my favorite authors and I absolutely LOVE what he did with doctor who. My favorite show with one of my favorite authors, what could be better?
I LOVED the TARDIS playing with the tenses and saying things before they had needed to be said. Literally anthropomorphising the soul of the TARDIS as this energy that can go anywhere translated really well in a way that the TARDIS seemed confused how to express all its power and knowledge through human communication and human intelligence - just so...amazing and interesting and kind of funny!
Two things I really look forward to finding out (if we get to) after this episode:
1) how does the Tardis like River? When River flies her? She knew so much of the future - she'll know River's story and that will affect how the TARDIS likes River (particularly since we see so strongly how she loves the Doctor!)
2) (more obviously and likely to be explained) her last words in the body "The only water in the forest is the river" What does it mean?! And is river/River a coincidence or not?
What... Dianna Wynne Jones is late? :( I love her books. My old English teacher introduced me to them, and it was only years later that I learn that he was her son.
@missrosepip He was weeeeird though... Scatterbrained weird, not creepy weird, but still just an all-round oddball. For example, he started a Debate Club which he chaired and failed completely to remain impartial.
Neil Gaiman is a god. Easily one of my favorite episodes from 9, 10, or 11. But definitely my favorite 11 episode. I'm not crazy about Matt Smith or Steven Moffat, so it's hard for me to really enjoy doctor who anymore, but this episode was just AMAZING. I'm going to watch it again today.
Great review as always. Definitely, my favorite episode so far in Series 6, especially when the Doctor and Idris/TARDIS built the makeshift TARDIS, and the banter between the two was hilarious. Neil Gaiman should lend his talents every once in a while. I'd love to see him do a Christmas special. I hope this wasn't a once only gig for him. And we now know who the Doctor's wife is. Keep up the great reviews.
This is the first DW episode to make me cry. It was the part at the end the "Hello, Doctor. It's very nice to meet you." part. It was just SO BRILLIANT.
I love how the characterized the TARDIS. To me she was almost like DoctorDonna in Journeys End -- a bit reprimanding, but matching his mad brilliance. The steampunk-ness fit in so well with it.
Also, "the only water in the forest is the River." Forest of the Dead, anyone?
YES! (I just tweeted the biting quote before I watched this). The Doctor and his TARDIS are such a sweet pair; I hope we get to see the TARDIS's personality again in the future. I also thought Jones was a lot like Bonham Carter - appearance and personality. I enjoyed this episode so much; it was very adorable, awesome, wonderful.
P.S. Anyone else think the line about the water/river in the forest is a reference to River Song?
This is by far my favorite episode since David was the Doctor. I only wish Idris could have stayed around because I absolutely loved her. I love the characterization of everyone. They needed that in depth connection that the last episode did not have. This episode is probably the funniest too in that the lines are hilarious. "your like a 9 yr old trying to rebuild a motor bike" "bitey mad lady" "orangey girl" and Rory as the "pretty one" lmao. Also, "the only water in the forrest is the River"
I'm not going to lie, I was a little bit disappointed with this episode. It was fantastic, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I want answers and I don't think I'll be happy with the episodes unless there is some answer solved in it.
However, I think Neil Gaiman should write more for Doctor Who and I'm going to go rewatch the episode because part of the reason why I didn't like it as much may have been because I didn't get to watch it all the way because of bad wi-fi. :/
I dont understand why people cant see that rorys repetitive 'deaths' are hinting at an impending genuine horror for AMy . Its not The Doctor but Rory who is the centre of her world. see again that message she left for 'stupid face'...the t'imes she looks to HIM for 'saving' (like in this episode, and her calling out to him in the pirate episode) Her real horror will be if/when she's finally completely seperated from him. He is her knight, her devoted protector and if he ever DOES die....
I totally agree with everything you said and I loved this episode so much. The only things I took issue with were Rory freaking dying again (it's getting a little bit redundant and not believable anymore) and how Rory and Amy didn't just hold hands. I mean, it was such an obvious solution to the problem of getting separated, and it's not like House couldn't separate them in other ways, so why not? It was just distracting.
I wonder if Suranne Jones was supposed to resemble Helena Bonham Carter?
This was definitely Matt Smith's best episode. I've always said he can do the funny parts, but he's never been able to be emotional, the way Tennant and even Eccleston could if Gallifrey was mentioned for example. But he proved me wrong, I was in tears. It was just beautiful. The Amy/Rory/House chase was terrifying, but amazing.
But why couldn't we have one episode without a reference to River???
watching your reaction videos makes me happy. it's like an episode recap with extra attention on my favourite parts. and also I know that if I've missed something , you will probably bring it up. So you know, it's like a who tradition. watch doctor who, then watch your reaction video :) also the way you speak makes everything seem wonderful :)
absolutely adored it..but doesnt anyone else not think that the whole idea of rory dying repeatedly is really being set up for something REALLY dark and nasty? the first time we saw him 'die' remember was also the first time we saw amy 'pregnant' in her dream 'reality'. and every time he dies its NOT the doctor who 'saves' him' just think of that..I tell you this is ALL intentional. its happening too often for it not to be leading to something. cant wait to see how it all unfolds.
"The only water in the Forest is the River" - Maybe the doctor has to go back to the Library (Forest of the Dead) where he first met River and ask her for help. Maybe he might bring her back from her digital form to a flesh and bone body again.
I've always thought that when Nine kissed Rose he was more kissing the Tardis, so this was wonderful for me. So much great stuff it's hard for me to pick favorites, BUT Tardis graveyard of dead sisters, always took him where he needed to go, Amy's 'delight', Hello, the music. The music shone in this episode.
The line about "You never take me where I want to go" "I've always taken you where you needed to be" was a nice tip of the hat to Douglas Adams, who was a writer for Doctor Who for a while. (It's a paraphrased quote from The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, not Hitchhikers Guide).
I really loved this episode. It's episodes like these that make me love Doctor Who. I thought it was really nice to have a change of writers. It was just so sweet and quotable, and it really did create an interest in the characters again. The show only tells what happens outside the TARDIS, and this episode let everyone know that they do spend a lot of time in the TARDIS and it created a curosity to know what does go on in the TARDIS.
What about "The only water in the forest is the river." That line drives me mad! What if Amy is River. I re-watched the episode with the tree-borgs (return of the weeping angels), and it COULD be possible. Not saying that it is, but oh my god. Wouldn't that be a plot twist?
This episode reminded me so much of the 10th Doctor, I wish I liked Matt Smith as much as David Tennant. They're both brilliant actors but I feel like 11 has lost some of the compassion 10 had.
It was a very weird episode, the whole "outside of the Universe" concept really intrigued me. I loved the junkyard "planet" so to speak and Suranne Jones was just WOW in this episode and the acting from Matt Smith was just fantastic! It makes last weeks episode look like crap (which it nearly is) 10/10 for this one!
That was a sort of throwback to one of Steven Moffat's other series Jekyll, Which had this very psychopathic but very charismatic madman as the lead. "Ever Killed anyone? It's like sex only there's a winner." I loved that line and I loved hearing this sort of sendup to it in this series. I also loved how the Tardis kept calling him a thief, and "My thief, where's my thief" How they stole each other. and all that stuff about "Sexy, is that my name?" "We travel, I go whoosh whoosh"
Personally, I didn't like the idea of the TARDIS represented as a person. It reminded me of when they made Moya (the living ship from Farscape) chat with it's crew in one episode, it didn't seem right. Of course they're all living ships, that's a given, but do we really need to make them human to know that? It's like the addiction of 90% of sci-fi TV writers making all their aliens and robots look human when they don't need to be - not cool!
I loved this episode too, its funny that you mentioned "Vincent and the Doctor" because that episode is my favorite of all time, this one is a close second though ^^
Loved the episode. I didn't remember that this one was the Neil Gaiman episode. Then I heard Auntie and Uncle talk. And I was like "Oh. Neil Gaiman." I loved the Tardis, I felt that was done really well and that the actress was spot on.
Also I am absolutely starting S.P.O.W. - Society for the Protection of Oodish Welfare. They're like the scapegoats of the Universe - possessed, lobotomised, abondoned to fall into black holes - not acceptable. >:(
Haha, I totally thought the exact same thing about the elephant/TARDIS graveyard when they aired the series trailer. One thing though! I kind of found it weird that they likened the ruined TARDISes to corpses and were then all 'let's stitch 'em all together!' when the Doctor was so angry with House doing the exact same thing with bits of dead Time Lord to make Auntie and Uncle. I know TARDISes are technically machines, but this episode put huge emphasis on their having souls.
I loved the way that they brought back bits of the old series as they seemed to have tried very hard to keep away from them (apart from the weeping angels which were 'written' by Steven Moffat so you can understand why) I've been waiting for some more bits of his past to be discussed or mentioned for the past two series. I mean, he never even mentions his old companions any more, although Amy knows about them. I think it's a shame that Moffat tries so hard to make the series his own.
Best episode of the series by far... Well, out of the four we've had at least, but I'm guessing it's going to be better than a fair few others as well. I simply loved the whole premise of the episode, giving the TARDIS a voice, it's such a clever idea, and I can't believe it's not been done before - especially since they've always said that the TARDIS was alive...
We've got to remember "the only water in the forest is the river" too. I'm guessing that'll come up after the split...
Suranne Jones really reminded me of Helena Bonham Carter too, and I think it was probably helped along by the way she was dressed but also in her acting. It was weird seeing her in this as well because I've known her in so many different roles, like in Single Father with David and I even remember her when she was in Coronation Street :')
I agree. I was so excited after watching this I couldn't really contain myself. It was so wonderful and brilliantly executed, every single detail. It finally personified this character that we all know and love, and it was done so perfectly that everything she said was simply something we could imagine the TARDIS saying. AHH amazing!
Interesting you talk about Diana Wynne Jones - she's been a big influence on Neil Gaiman's writing. He wrote a lovely blog about his relationship with her following her death.
the line about taking the doctor where he needs to go. it reminds me a lot of the doctor talking to amy about "you have to trust me" "you dont always tell me the truth"
@TheCutiepie17 Sorry, I haven't been able to fix it, input was actually turned far far far down. I shall try to get a good mic in the next few months. - Rosi
when she was saying that there was a word, 'so sad' and stuff, i really hoped it was going to be his name.. i was a bit disappointed when it was 'alive'. overall i loved the episode, but i really disliked the corridors they were running down, it just didnt say tardis to me. i LOVED the 'die amy hate amy' graffiti, i thought it was fantastic!!!!!!!
I also liked the fact that they never really showed the Doctor going head over heels for her, it's just subtly implied, but we all know what's going on in his head. The way they bickered was just adorable. I definatly think they should stop having Amy as the "main" companion though. They're still just using Rory to build her character, rather than being his own person.
God I loved it. I never really bought into the Doctor/Rose combo, but this, hell yes! The TARDIS really the only person/thing the Doctor could love. The last remnent of his people, the one who stuck by him not matter what, the only constant thing in his life. It's such a simple concept but it worked perfectly. Plus Rory asked a question I've always wondered: does the Doctor have a room?
The TARDIS corridors looked kind of a bit... Star Wars-like :S Not sure I liked that. But it was good to see more of the TARDIS than just the main control room for once!
Yeees it was so good~! I reeally really hope that this was not the only episode Gaiman's gonna write, the combination of Doctor Who and Neil Gaiman is just too brilliant to leave it for just one episode! Unf, so good~
I thought the TARDIS lady was Helena Bonham Carter for a minute. I managed to walk in late when my family was watching. CURSE YOU, A-Level revision. PRAISE YOU, BBC iPlayer! :D
I just sat here going OMG YES YOU'RE RIGHT all the way through.. I agree with you on everything about this episode! And the biting line was the best!!
Also, the notion of turning the TARDIS into a person is just brilliant; only Gaiman does stuff like that. It was so beautiful ( AND Matt smith is now approved of, he's finally broke down and showed the doctor's vulnerable side, I haven't felt like I've seen that before)
This was my favourite episode of this series, easily. The biting line is my favourite line ever? :)
It was so great how the past was so effortlessly weaved in. There was lots of stuff going on to keep you engaged, without the messiness that was the opening two episodes. *****
The end was so sad, but when the Tardis "replied" to the Doctor's question at the end brought a huge smile to my face. It was such an amazing episode - I hope they bring Neil back!
Funnily enough, I didn't like the episode that much. I mean, I enjoyed it, but I went on the Internet after and everyone was hysterical and I didn't feel that way at all. I have since rewatched it, and some clips this morning, and it's definitely growing on me.
I thought about it, why my reaction was so different, and I figured I just had different expectations in my head which weren't met. I look at the ep differently now and can appreciate it more.
the bit in the episode that made me SO HAPPY was when they brought back the tenths tardis! When i saw the inside of the tenth tardis i was speechless! I was happy it came back!!!!!
Wow & wow! What an episode, a fantastical genius one from Neil Gaiman that will be revered forever to come in Whovian mythology. Where to start!! I tweeted on a similar theme to your observations i.e. Idris reminding me of Calcifer in Howl's Moving Castle, same sort of spirited ethereal essence linked intrinsically to Howl. With regards to the Elephant's Graveyard in Lion King I also thought younger viewers might have thought of Wall-E when they saw House's asteroid Tardis junkyard home. Brill!
i loved that episode too! and she reminded me of helena too! i loved the acting from uncle and auntie, i lol'ed when he said: she's dead?...oh, so sad. it was soooo funny. I loved acting from matt smith, especially at the end, I was all teary. but at the end, when they said that only water is river....kinda obvious :riversong, but maybe they just want us to to think that way....hmmm....
I seem to recall the Fifth Doctor saying there was an "elephant graveyard of TARDISes at the end of the universe" because when a Time Lord dies their TARDIS grieves so much it throws itself into the Time Vortex. I guess it's the same sort of emotive concept behind TARDISes that is just so wonderful :D
I'm also more and more impressed with Matt Smith's performance. I mean, this is the first time we've seen him properly SAD - not angry, not inm a hurry, not gabbling at 90 mph - just SAD. It was done so, SO well. I mean, to properly let down your walls like that - it's rare for anty Doctor, but especially the 11th. Even 10 didn't oftenlet himself go into that emoion muich. I think the closest we got was at the end of Doomsday, but it was very short and controlled. This scene just felt more real.
Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla
I want some answers please... What is the benefit or Interest Of all your videos Seventy-seven video!and What next? Just a waste of time!!! Try to do something useful Can you answer me :)
@AHMEDStation The point is that its a critical review of the latest Dr Who episode. I don't know where your from but in the UK, Doctor Who is a much loved television program and we love to know other people's views on the episodes.
@iamasnaily I do not know who you are SNAIL! Why try to hiding yourself You do not have true picture or real name I see your channel Courageous Human does not hide himself Thank you Snail :)
Yay!!!! I agree with you about everything finally! I'm tired of feeling bad about loving River's character.*Sigh*... I wonder what the TARDIS thinks of River stealing her Doctor :D
Am I the only person who when the tardis said she needed water, I thought that she would need tea because of the whole regeneration thing in the Christmas Invasion? Does that make sense?
My favourite line? As Rory and Amy were heading off to bed, Rory asks: "Doctor, don't you have a room?" And of course he does. He never leaves it, except to go exploring. A beautiful, perfect gem of an episode. Gaiman didn't disappoint!
I loved this episode too! I possibly would have liked more from the monster but this wasn't necessarily about the monster, but about the doctor and the tardis. I thought it was performed so well. It was such a relief to get the doctor away from amy and rory and to interact with another being, i don't know but it just seemed like the dialogue would get fairly predictable. You know, I really want Jenny back. I want Jenny to take us to some kickass planet and get some good doctor kickass-ness.
I definitely agree, this was my favorite eleventh doctor episode, I loved it! It actually made me cry! And the scene where they were back in the old tardis main room! It was so nostalgic! And Amya little hallucination with crazy old rory was brilliant! Neil Gaiman did a wonderful job! One of my favorite episodes out of all the series, definitely!
Smith has Not made Me Cry yet like David Tennant did in every other Episode, but this Episode got Me So close to it, the ending was brilliant and so well written I was all most in tears, if My Friends where Not in the room at the time I'm sure I would have been Crying but I'm sure I will Cry next time I watch it, Great Episode and Great Review
My favorite thing was that Neil Gaiman actually acknowledged the fact that the show has been on for decades. He referred to the history of the Doctor, both what we know as viewers and what we didn't know, and it was so refreshing.
I really liked the fact that they mentioned other time lords I mean even if they aren't stioll alive jsut seeing the doctor's reaction and that brief moment when Amy tells him he just wants some resolution.
This dr who episode hit the spot for me! I was on the edge of my seat when Amy and rory were running in the TARDIS, and misty-eyed by the connection between "sexy" (lol) and the doctor! It hit all of the important bases for me, and I LOVE Neil gaimin! Is there a possiblity of him doing another episode???
I adored this episode so much. I think it's been a while since a Dr. Who episode had me laugh, squee, and tear up all in one episode. It was just so wonderfully great.
I loved how Rory was much more active in this episode--kind of more active than Amy, even. I feel like they might be easing him into being sort of the "main" companion, because I heard a rumor that Amy Pond might be absent for some of this series for some reason.
1 complaint: Amy's fear of Rory hating her for all she's done to him seemed a little ungrounded to me. If she truly feared that, I feel like she'd stop treating him like shit so much. xD Seeing old bearded Rory was super scary though.
this episode did make me wonder if the house you'd lived in for the majority of years of ur life embodied a person, i wonder if u would feel an emotional connection, but i really felt the doctor's emotion when he started crying when the tardis had to leave the woman

FlamingCamera 9 months ago 2
I love how the characterized the TARDIS. To me she was almost like DoctorDonna in Journeys End -- a bit reprimanding, but matching his mad brilliance. The steampunk-ness fit in so well with it.
Also, "the only water in the forest is the River." Forest of the Dead, anyone?
LizzieBananas 9 months ago
P.S. Anyone else think the line about the water/river in the forest is a reference to River Song?
odddialect 9 months ago

And Rory died! Again!

He is her knight, her devoted protector and if he ever DOES die....
alienwizardling 9 months ago
I totally agree with everything you said and I loved this episode so much. The only things I took issue with were Rory freaking dying again (it's getting a little bit redundant and not believable anymore) and how Rory and Amy didn't just hold hands. I mean, it was such an obvious solution to the problem of getting separated, and it's not like House couldn't separate them in other ways, so why not? It was just distracting.
JustMargaret 9 months ago
Did no one else like the "Fear me" competition between House and The Doctor. or was it just me?

@sarah13696 well he didn't really die. Just the house manipulating Amy's fear!
caliowin 9 months ago
I wonder if Suranne Jones was supposed to resemble Helena Bonham Carter?
This was definitely Matt Smith's best episode. I've always said he can do the funny parts, but he's never been able to be emotional, the way Tennant and even Eccleston could if Gallifrey was mentioned for example. But he proved me wrong, I was in tears. It was just beautiful. The Amy/Rory/House chase was terrifying, but amazing.
But why couldn't we have one episode without a reference to River???

absolutely adored it..but doesnt anyone else not think that the whole idea of rory dying repeatedly is really being set up for something REALLY dark and nasty? the first time we saw him 'die' remember was also the first time we saw amy 'pregnant' in her dream 'reality'. and every time he dies its NOT the doctor who 'saves' him' just think of that..I tell you this is ALL intentional. its happening too often for it not to be leading to something. cant wait to see how it all unfolds.

So is the title "The Doctor's Wife" referencing that the TARDIS is like a wife, or does it reference the allusion made at the end to River Song?

The show only tells what happens outside the TARDIS, and this episode let everyone know that they do spend a lot of time in the TARDIS and it created a curosity to know what does go on in the TARDIS.
irrishpirrate 9 months ago

MBGamingLegends 9 months ago
That was a sort of throwback to one of Steven Moffat's other series Jekyll, Which had this very psychopathic but very charismatic madman as the lead. "Ever Killed anyone? It's like sex only there's a winner." I loved that line and I loved hearing this sort of sendup to it in this series. I also loved how the Tardis kept calling him a thief, and "My thief, where's my thief" How they stole each other. and all that stuff about "Sexy, is that my name?" "We travel, I go whoosh whoosh"
Sairin13 9 months ago
Personally, I didn't like the idea of the TARDIS represented as a person. It reminded me of when they made Moya (the living ship from Farscape) chat with it's crew in one episode, it didn't seem right. Of course they're all living ships, that's a given, but do we really need to make them human to know that? It's like the addiction of 90% of sci-fi TV writers making all their aliens and robots look human when they don't need to be - not cool!

My favourite line was "Did you wish really hard?"
I absolutely ADORED this episode.

I agree. I was so excited after watching this I couldn't really contain myself. It was so wonderful and brilliantly executed, every single detail. TheHannah641 9 months ago
I also liked the fact that they never really showed the Doctor going head over heels for her, it's just subtly implied, but we all know what's going on in his head. The way they bickered was just adorable. I definatly think they should stop having Amy as the "main" companion though. They're still just using Rory to build her character, rather than being his own person.
mushroomshrub 9 months ago
God I loved it. I never really bought into the Doctor/Rose combo, but this, hell yes! The TARDIS really the only person/thing the Doctor could love. The last remnent of his people, the one who stuck by him not matter what, the only constant thing in his life. It's such a simple concept but it worked perfectly. Plus Rory asked a question I've always wondered: does the Doctor have a room?

Brill!
