I was on Kwajalein 1960 - 1962 and my mother claimed that of all the places we lived Kwaj was her favorite. It was probably due to the fact that with no TV on the island people socialized much more in that people were always over at the house chatting or they were over at theirs. We lived about three houses from "Bunker Hill" on the north tip of the island on the lagoon side. My next experience with a tropical paridise 4 years after we left was with the 4th Marine Regiment in Vietnam.
yeah because kwajalein is the plave to be! i miss home! and its true but now they cut down the visitation of the marshallese and theres hardly any social functions n my dad said the same thing ur mother said!!
I was another Kwaj brat in the early 70s, when I was 3.
Thank you for this video. I can't tell you what it means to me to see this. I remember picking up the little crabs and starfish among the rocks on the beach when the breakers came in and washed them up.
I also remember going to preschool in a thatched hut, and riding on the back of my mom's bike to go to the 10-10. AS Iwritethis,I am scanningin pictures of Kwaj from an old family photo album. How cool is that?
lyllydd: Amazing enough that you remember anything at that age.
Who did your dad work for? I was Raytheon.
I was 25 years old and I never felt more free, not even to this day.
Of course, you must realize that most of us were "long-haired freaks" with more free SE Asian weed than we could deal with. And just what Mother Nature had to do with it....no additives!!
Watchihg UFOs chase our camera strobes was a trip.
Kwaj was my home 1982 - 1994... whenever I have a bad day in Baltimore I watch this video! Peace to all, Daughter of the man with the Greek fisherman's cap..
will always remember my time on the rock.. 73-89.. my whole youth.. thank you for capturing the beauty.. it seemed so small at the time, but yet that was all we knew!
Just had to mention this. One day a C5A buzzed the island unannounced. Seemed like it blotted out the sun, low and hard. It did land on Kwaj. with Westmoreland and his entourage aboard.
We were actually in the middle of a softball game when that behemoth came overhead, and yes, we all ducked.
The next day Westmoreland popped his head into my office and said, "Nice, nice, carry on".
I was listening to a Miami Dolphins game at the time, and way too busy to be impressed.
I remember it being warm year round. I remember walking to the other island when the tide was down and the pools of water there. And i remember going inside a Bunker I think I was 7 or 8. Then we moved to the States. I will never forget how peaceful that place was.My feet were like leather as I never had to wear shoes even in December.
I loved on Kwaj as a child during 1968-69. I still love the place, it will always have a special place in my heart. It is truly paradise. Thanks for sharing this so I can "see it" again. Wish we had this technology back in the 60's!
kevin this to cool what a great job.. i wonder how everyone is doin,,, did u go texas in 05 . it was great. god i miss all the fun, ,,, and not gettin caught....lololo..dave 80 -84
