how "good" do you have to be to use a signal mirror at that range? Do you train, or have a lot of experience using them? For example- could a person get the same frequency and constancy of flashes as you in this video with 2-3 hours of practice?

@Kleinalrik Clear air is the key, but in clear air, this is the range you can expect for a good 3"x5" glass mirror. That's what the US Navy found: "Mirror Flash Seen 45 Miles" , Naval Aviation News, August 1951, p. 28, . The 1850s British survey rule of thumb when surveying India was: "an inch for 10 miles, 2 inches for 20 miles, and so on" - see: "A manual of surveying for India". p400 (bottom)

Wow this is very amazing, this demonstration shows how effective this simple survival tool is. This just makes me even more want to carry mine along backpacking
