Yes, I remember this too. My family is in the carnival business, so I visited it as something new in the carnival business. My youngest brother got the contract to remove the rides from the park after it closed.
I remember going here about 30 years ago, with a bunch of my cousins, probably Thanksgiving weekend, as we used to go to Downer's Grove for Thanksgiving in the late 1970's-1982 or so.
holly mac, i was going threw some old pics right in front of me is a pic of my family outside the place.. hot damn old chicago was a big part of r lives in those days.. why did i think it was really far and it really was noT ( BOILINGBROOK). a movie was filmed there too. santa village was the shit.. yes yes the fury!! damn we all rocked out in r good times / brady bunch look in those days..
The horror house was very scary. I went to Chicago a year or so before it failed so a lot of the shops were closed by then. The whole place was kind of creepy by that point.
@sdavis197@ChiRock773@sheltermaniac I might be able to fill some holes in. It DID close in 1981 (family friend owned a record shop there). Leveled and then became a large auto auction, which still operates to this day. Bolingbrook tried to convert it into an international commerce center but that failed years back. Great memories.
This is why I REFUSE to call Mall of America "an original" of its type. It's not. The first time I saw MoA pictures, the first thing I thought was this is a ripoff of Old Chicago on a bigger scale. Great memories though.
This was the forerunner of Mall of America

Weird childhood memory while it lasted. Me and my family went there on my 11th birthday in Feb 1978.

Good times at Old Chicago, both the amusement parks and the shops. I remember the horror house being particularly scary.

It closed in 1981 and was eventually torn down. There is a website about it.
