He is a great player but he plays so fast that he breaks his own tempo to emphasize certain parts. That has some merits but it also means the piece isn't as fluent, and isn't the masterpiece that Beethoven composed.
he was agitated while playing this piece,,, i like the way he played... INSPIRING... i would like to try it...even i know i couldnt play this piece(n_n)
At the moment I play this piece a bit slowly compared to the best, but I think I can still take some inspiration from the dynamics and control they show, even if I play it slow
What amazing talent and oneness with the piano, a true connection to this great work of music. Well done!! I believe Beethoven is smiling down on that performance!!
0:13 pinky did not hold on G# thru out as should be. This is like technical issues which should not even be discussed in professional piano playing. Is this guy famous or something? I actually do love his intrepretation and playing but that's just something you should NEVER expect to see from a professional pianist. This was written down by the genius Beethoven himself, not left to intrepret. Disappointed =[ (go check every single other version, none has this issue)
@slbaaron Yeah I noticed that too, he plays the higher G# with finger number 2, therefore making it impossible for him to reach the lower G#. Perhaps he had small hands at the time he was learning the piece and simply forgot. You can barely notice a difference though and I believe this interpretation is amazing to listen to. It's quite hard to tell if that G# is being sustained or not because there's much more going on.
@NCONiall Thx to modern day piano and pedal actually. You can also hear his pedal is a bit clustered as well (which wouldn't be as bad with a piano from the time of beethoven, but making the absence of sustain on G# very obvious.) . Definitely not the best version in technical stuffs but like I said, I do feel his own emotions and style in this and I mean no offense to this man. Music is a very subjective subject, respect.
Beethoven was a real genius, truly magical and captivating. I would call him a genius without knowing he was deaf, knowing he was deaf just emphasises his true genius.
I'm really sorry but this performance feels...ordinary... all that big sound is too...sudden, no nice transitions; all just bangy, empty bombast, more a showpiece, and less like art! :x
Apologies for those it offends, but its just my opinion~
Just remember Beethoven was going deaf and I dare to say no one who was or is afflicted with that dreaded handicap could do better. Understand the man and the you will understand his art. It was truly God given.
@sconaway66 Good sir/madam I agree with your concluding statement, but mind you the moonlight is one of his early sonatas. Yet his later sonatas, composed when he was even more deaf, have a much stronger "singing" feel to them, and can require alot more holding back! Any one of them decently-played will substantiate this; though I recommend Serkin on the 1st Op110.
To think that Beethoven=deafness=angst and nothing else is a serious error. I made it myself when I first tried this song - avoid!!
A piano piece is always a mix of the Composer and the performer, I think should be a bit less himself and more Beethoven,
Oh another C#0 on this perforimg too, looks nobody can hold the temptation of pressing that key on this one, I was doing it, but now I'm gonna play that key too, I'll say "well I saw it in youtube" :)
@fateplus1 sorry but if you can not perform something just half as good as that you do not own the right to even imply that is even slightly close to been bad
@marcelofernandes21 sure i do my right to judge has nothing to do with my actual playing ability.. im sure he can play it better i just think that the way he breaks time is a weak way to emphasize certain parts of the song, i dont mean to say he's unskilled in any way or that he is "bad"
@marcelofernandes21 He was commenting on the interpretation; obviously he is a very good player, but I certainly agree that some of his phrasing and tempo choices were not on par with many other pianists. Look up Wilhelm Kempf or Vladimir Horowitz playing it and you might understand why...

I love how whenever someone criticizes a player's performance, someone always has to assume that the critic thinks that they are superior to the player in any way...
@chris110012 well clearly this idiot has no idea what his on about. this piece is NOT played at one tempo. @xIRiseIx Here Here... there are several noted signature changes in the piece. So I agree, the piece is not meant to be played at one continuous rate. It wouldn't sound nearly as intense, nor would its subtleties be as effective.
@chris110012 hmm i guess but i prefer musician's that can take away a piece of music and make it there own rather than being the same as everyone else if they all did that what would be the point? and no i'm not i'm sure his old enough to take it all in and to process the information. in my personal opinion to reach this gentleman's standard take's year's upon year's of dedication and hard practice IF criticism need's to be made ATLEAST make it reasonably constructive followed by a explanation.
@chris110012 Agreed, but equally annoying are critics who don't merely dislike something but act like a player they dislike is inferior in every way, "can't play", is "an idiot", etc. No matter what you think of this performance, it is objectively obvious to anyone who understands music that the player is a complete master of the technique required to play the piece in any way he chooses. If he's chosen a way you don't like, it's manifestly false to imply he's incompetent.

@insideoutface It separates the different phrases. Music sounds best when it mimics speech and converses with itself. Imagine that the different tempos are different people speaking with eachother, it will make sense.

Hi, everybody! I have a question...My teacher gave me a choice on whether I will learn this or not. I'm not sure if I'm ready. (I just finished learning Invitation to the Dance if that helps... If you're going to watch the a video for that piece, you should listen to the whole thing)
6:45-6:48 - He came. I'm learning this myself and picking up some dynamics tips from the pros. I like this version but the softness of the Kempf version still wins for me.
He plays spectacular, but he interprets zero. I know it's impressive for people because of the power he gives it. But Beethoven already thought about that "power". While piano is predominant, he placed sforzando notes and fortissimo enactments to this. I know there are a lot of versions, but I really hate when I cannot feel the composer's mood back when he composed the sonata. Still, Mark is a terrific piano player.
@yowyOw69 How on earth would you know what Beethoven's 'mood' was when he wrote this? This is a beautifully executed and passionate rendition. I think it is great interpretation and could well reflect the great man's mood at the time.
@yowyOw69 I Agree with you, but i think the "composer interpretation" is not better or "badder" than the "player interpretation", they are just two point of view of a same piece. And for me i like "player interpretation" cause we ear ( or see when the "re-write" the partition) some aspect of a piece that we perhaps never know before. (Sorry for the bad english but i'm french)
Musicians spend years studying privately, at colleges and music schools to then go on into teaching, examining, lecturing and judging......What a waste....It seems all you really need is a You tube account and some basic, limited knowledge in classical music...
Well if speed is a sign of playing a peace well, then he is best - maybe. But keep on thinking, when this master peace of Beethoven was composed. It's way to fast. Slow down Mark - please!
@felixrex20021 The tempo marking is "Presto agitato" for this movement. I think the tempo in this performance is perfect and conveys all the turbulence inherent in the music. I love this interpretation.

Some people want young white females to mix with non-white males.
I made a one-minute video highlighting a very small sample of race-mixing advertisements.
I love white people, and I am opposed to race-mixing. But I do not hate non-whites.

Mark Salman is awesome! but imagine hearing Beethoven plays this movement himself... what a beast he would be...

Musicians spend years studying privately, at colleges and music schools to then go on into teaching, examining, lecturing and judging......What a waste....It seems all you really need is a You tube account and some basic, limited knowledge in classical music...

he has really good dynamics.
and who are the people that could dislike this?!

@felixrex20021 I dunno...I think Glenn Gould plays it faster...

Faster, slower. This portrays the right emotions.

Totally...tempo is a fairly minor piece of the entire package, and Salman's interpretation is definitely beautiful. :-)
