@aggiefan1011 Its a personal choice, the Nitrous will cool the air mixture more then propane will but propane actually adds power so you have to cut fuel delivery. For towing up mountains I personally have both, you never know which will be better. Propane is better to me only b/c its easier to come across when you need to refill, but nitrous doesn't explode like propane if your ever in an accident, again personal choice.

you can run a 300 dry shot with a stock diesel and gain literally no power, but not hurt anything... the issue is when your running huge amounts of fuel and nitrous with no mods to support the extra power
Ok, so let's set the record straight... First off, all modern DIESELS come FROM THE FACTORY with a turbo, so don't call it a poweradder. Second, there is no such thing as a "nitrous charger". Nitrous is a gas that is injected into the intake and adds more oxygen, like @Britewhiteram said. However, it only lowers the egt's on diesel engines. It raises them on gas engines. @ilus101, there is no such thing as "diesel gas", nor are there gas Duramaxes! Hope this clears things up...
@Lowry7724 Totally wrong about the nitrous adding oxygen dude. The oxygen in the nitrous is already in oxide form, it does not act as the oxidizing agent. The positively charged nitrogen acts as the oxidizing agent and the negatively charged carbon in the fuel acts as the reducing agent.
@7150285 Diesels can use nitrous just as any combustion engine can, Nitrous adds more oxygen to the fuel/air mix, allowing the fuel to be burned more efficiently, effectively working like a turbo charger to make the aircharge more dense, as well it helps to cool that air charge and effectively lowers Exhaust Gas tempuratures
Propane works differently, it adds more fuel to the fuel/air mix, which in most cases diesels do not need because stock injectors can over fuel the stock turbo charger

@ilus101 Duramax is a diesel. Diesel is not gas, diesel is diesel. The only truck that comes with any forced air intakes (supercharger/turbo) is the SS, and the SS comes with a supercharger. You can not have a gas fuel Duramax, it is impossible. Duramax is the GM diesel truck, like Cummins is the diesel for Dodge and Powerstroke is the diesel for Ford. No vehicle can run gas and diesel, gas uses spark plugs and diesel uses glow plugs.

I assumed that all the SS's came with a supercharger. You can get bolt on superchargers/turbos for these trucks.

aaah... ignorance is bliss... I drive my '03 GMC Crewcab Dually with it's 6.6 turbo diesel, while pulling my 1987 Camaro drag car to the drag strip... un-hook the trailer, and race the truck. obviously warblade doesn't know what he's speaking of. diesel is the better option. 1) I add a "chip" to the truck (as I have mine) and added 120 hp and about 200 lb-ft of torque. Buy a chip for the same money for a gasoline powered vehicle and get about 30 hp. 2) diesels are already designed for turbos. I will add a second turbo to my truck and increase my boost from 26 psi to around 45 psi, with no internal mods. add over 8 psi boost to gas & you're having to do full rebuild to handle it

So why am I supposed to be impressed again? I've seen diesel trucks run 9's. But it takes about 3 times more money than a typical 9 second race car, they don't last as long, are far more expensive to rebuild, and tend to break a lot. This just proves that with enough money and power adders anything is fast.

@7707Allen Turbo diesel trucks are not fast stock. They are made for pulling (and do a hell of a good job at it) We’ve got a duramax at our dragstrip that runs 9’s (when its not broke) and even the owner admitted he has a fortune invested in the thing. (think $40,000 truck with another 20K put in it) But he just wanted something different. Well, he got it. The down side is he could have had three 9 second racecars if he would have just left his duramax alone and used it as a hauler.

Diesels have come a hell of a long way! There were 2 CTD's at the strip rinning mid 12's last night. Faster than about 90% of everything that was out there.
@BL1Ro nitrous is an oxidizer, it helps fuel burn cleaner and more thorough, thus adding more power because it takes less work to burn the fuel, more common in gas powered engines, but has the same characteristics in diesel engines as well
@homerunhita12 Don't forget that the extra power comes mainly from the fact that the nitrous, being, I think 40% Oxygen by weight, allows us to dump even more fuel into the cylinders and still maintain a burnable fuel/air ratio though on the rich side to prevent piston meltdowns ect. The reason you see the black smoke when the nitrous button is hit.
@steveandant spark plugs have nothing to do with nitrous, and glow plugs are not even in the same catagory, nor do they spark they emit heat to assist the engine in combusting the fuel on a cold start

@aggiefan1011 Its a personal choice, the Nitrous will cool the air mixture more then propane will but propane actually adds power so you have to cut fuel delivery. For towing up mountains I personally have both, you never know which will be better. Propane is better to me only b/c its easier to come across when you need to refill, but nitrous doesn't explode like propane if your ever in an accident, again personal choice.

Ok, so let's set the record straight... First off, all modern DIESELS come FROM THE FACTORY with a turbo, so don't call it a poweradder. Second, there is no such thing as a "nitrous charger". Nitrous is a gas that is injected into the intake and adds more oxygen, like @Britewhiteram said. However, it only lowers the egt's on diesel engines. It raises them on gas engines. @ilus101, there is no such thing as "diesel gas", nor are there gas Duramaxes! Hope this clears things up...

@Lowry7724 Totally wrong about the nitrous adding oxygen dude. The oxygen in the nitrous is already in oxide form, it does not act as the oxidizing agent. The positively charged nitrogen acts as the oxidizing agent and the negatively charged carbon in the fuel acts as the reducing agent.

@7150285 Diesels can use nitrous just as any combustion engine can, Nitrous adds more oxygen to the fuel/air mix, allowing the fuel to be burned more efficiently, effectively working like a turbo charger to make the aircharge more dense, as well it helps to cool that air charge and effectively lowers Exhaust Gas tempuratures
Propane works differently, it adds more fuel to the fuel/air mix, which in most cases diesels do not need because stock injectors can over fuel the stock turbo charger

@7150285 Im not sure what your trying to say, many people put turbos on cars, what im saying is that the N2O helps make the aircharge cooler and denser, allowing the engine to burn the fuel more efficiently, the principal works the same on gasoline and diesel engines

@7150285 Yes, a turbo can be used on a gas engine, most import racers use turbochargers, as well as many big block racers, you can put a turbo on any engine as long as its size appropriate for said engine

@7150285 :: i think he was trying to say, it is called TURBO DIESEL because the said mentioned truck, only runs on diesal gas, and the truck is turbo chrged, but, you can have the same type of DURAMAX truck, that runs on GAS and is also turbocharged, the diffrence is, the other truck can only use DIESEL gas, i guess that is what he is trying to say.

@ilus101 Duramax is a diesel. Diesel is not gas, diesel is diesel. The only truck that comes with any forced air intakes (supercharger/turbo) is the SS, and the SS comes with a supercharger. You can not have a gas fuel Duramax, it is impossible. Duramax is the GM diesel truck, like Cummins is the diesel for Dodge and Powerstroke is the diesel for Ford. No vehicle can run gas and diesel, gas uses spark plugs and diesel uses glow plugs.

@carlsoto1747 The SS never came supercharged... The SS has a 6.0 N/A motor, Now there was a Joe Gibbs Supercharged SS but is a limited built truck and the truck never leaves the factory with the supercharger.

@seifs4 Smart guy, ever think possibly the dealership put the supercharger on there? The guy who got the truck sent in lost his job and therefore couldn't buy the truck. I then bought the truck. I assumed that all the SS's came with a supercharger. You can get bolt on superchargers/turbos for these trucks.

obviously warblade doesn't know what he's speaking of. diesel is the better option. 1) I add a "chip" to the truck (as I have mine) and added 120 hp and about 200 lb-ft of torque. Buy a chip for the same money for a gasoline powered vehicle and get about 30 hp. 2) diesels are already designed for turbos. I will add a second turbo to my truck and increase my boost from 26 psi to around 45 psi, with no internal mods. add over 8 psi boost to gas & you're having to do full rebuild to handle it

@kvette007 Okay and how much did your truck and engine cost again? Because for the original purchase price of your truck I can build at least two 9 second race cars without any power adders or chips. Just a big ass carb as some race gas.
Now you add a pair of turbos to that and my gas motor is in a completely different league and I STILL bet it would be cheaper to build. But, I'd love to have a diesel truck to tow them to the race track.

@Warblade118 yeah the truck may have two power adders but you need to look at it this way the car is geared for top speed not pulling the truck is and plus the truck weighs way more and most of the weight in the truck is up front so it can break tracton easier...and even with all those factor the truck still whooped that car

@spunkkkerzz First off, neither of us knows how either of these vehicles are geared, that is easy to change, second, the truck also cost three times more to modify and has 4 wheel drive. So why am I supposed to be impressed again? I've seen diesel trucks run 9's. But it takes about 3 times more money than a typical 9 second race car, they don't last as long, are far more expensive to rebuild, and tend to break a lot. This just proves that with enough money and power adders anything is fast.

They are made for pulling (and do a hell of a good job at it) We’ve got a duramax at our dragstrip that runs 9’s (when its not broke) and even the owner admitted he has a fortune invested in the thing. (think $40,000 truck with another 20K put in it) But he just wanted something different. Well, he got it. The down side is he could have had three 9 second racecars if he would have just left his duramax alone and used it as a hauler.

pretty sure diesels are becoming todays hotrods.... theres PLENTY of diesels in funny cars and prostock trucks that run 8's all day...throw a hitch on it and it will drag what ever you can put behind it. there the best of both worlds, for a couple grand you can have a 12-13 second 8000, yes eight thousand pound truck in a quartmile and tow a 22k like it wasnt behind it. what can your ricer do? just go in straight lines?

@BL1Ro nitrous is an oxidizer, it helps fuel burn cleaner and more thorough, thus adding more power because it takes less work to burn the fuel, more common in gas powered engines, but has the same characteristics in diesel engines as well

@homerunhita12 Don't forget that the extra power comes mainly from the fact that the nitrous, being, I think 40% Oxygen by weight, allows us to dump even more fuel into the cylinders and still maintain a burnable fuel/air ratio though on the rich side to prevent piston meltdowns ect. The reason you see the black smoke when the nitrous button is hit.

@steveandant Umm Nitrous is an OXIDIZER... just like OXYGEN except pushed into the engine under a lot of pressure. It works marvelously in ANY internal combustion engine given the correct fuel ratio.
