I met Dag Otto during one of the tours in the mid 80's after an individual TT. Can't say he was the most sociable of fellows... Most of the domestiques were much more appreciative of the water/food we offered.
Dag Otto is incredible. At the age of 23 he was in a parachute accident and the doctors said he wouldn't walk again. He started with cycling as an alternative training and a few years later he won a stage in Tour de France. Incredible!
Roche is why I love cycling....I was 12 in 87 and it was very moving for me!. Does anybody know what mbk model Roche rode...not much info on the internet about mbk. Also I would like to know the same for the peugeot he rode? Thanks :)
It's pritty wierd wathcing this vid with the Man himself, Dag Otto is accidentaly married to my fathers sister lol :) He's surprised how good he was back then.
Hehe I have say, I almost want to ask him for hes autograph when he comes to visit us :P because he was and still is, a Super cyclist!
Lauritzen is a living legend in norwegian cycling! Living in the same city as Dag Otto, I was very proud to have him as a spectator of my cycling team's private little championship this saturday. Appearantly, he isn't bored with cycling yet :)
Hererra and Hampsten both looked good on this stage, but in a sense they were playing their cards too early. As with this year's race, 1987 had an insanely hard final week, and by that point both had faded while Bernard, Delgado and Roche grew stronger.
I'm getting goose bumps watching this!!! Anyone who doesn't give socalrider909 a 5-star rating for every cycling video he's uploaded is a wanker! I can remember almost all of Liggett's commentary because I used to cycle in the late 80s with the audio on cassette. Now I guess I can upload it to iPod and do it again. Cheers socalrider!!
Awesome video! I didn't know Norway had a man in cycling before Hushovd (well, I kinda knew, but not a lot!). BTW: The song is Yanni - Nostalgia, it's on youtube if you search for it ;)
Lauritzen was a great, aggressive rider. He should have won the 1990 Worlds, but got knocked over by Dirk DeWolf at just the wrong moment . . . something else you can see on youtube.
What an amazing tour the '87 edition was for the 7-11 team. Two riders finishing in the top-ten overall, three stages wins (one on the Champs Elysees), and the white jersey; not bad.
Dag was just awesome . I can imagine how much he might have accomplished a professional cyclist had he started racing as an adolescent.
And, I miss the CBS telecast of the Tour; they did a great job editing.
I love this video! But what kind of song is this? Can't find it anywhere ;-(

Today they went up Luz-Ardiden in the Tour de France again, exactly 24 years to the day after Dag Otto's incredible win.

@dahDougieBoy "Doctors said he would have a permanently stiff leg. They should see him now." God I love Phil Ligget's poetry.

I had this on a dusty old VHS tape. Brilliantly done. A few people have asked what the opening music is - it is Nostalgia by Yanni.

Seriously, the 1987 TDF was the best cycling production of CBS. Excellent editing, music, everything.

Hei Dag Otto.
