This has been one of my favorite songs 45+ yrs. They do a beautiful job, as always. Used to see them at Long Beach City Aud. in 60s. Was exciting to hear Southern Gospel Music in Calif. We went everytime they had concerts in LB - they were our favorite group! Hovie was an excellent pianist, along with Doy Ott.
Absolutely correct! Elvis said on many occasions that his biggest influence, and favourite bass singer, was Big Chief. He copied Big Chief's stance and leg shaking. This was from his time at the all-night gospel meets at the Ellis Auditorium in Memphis. He also loved Big Chief's style as he was always impeccably groomed and sharp in his suits, a lesson not lost on Elvis. Thank God for the Big Chief!!!
Whew, listen to that harmony. Rosie had soul when he sang . Chief's presense can't be matched. Jack & Doy's influence sure can't be ignored. Finally Hovie, well what can be said? :)
Does anyone know the song "Jonah Go Down to Ninevah"(not sure that's the title)? When I was a kid I used to listen to it on a record and liked it a lot. I think the Statesmen sang it, but I'm not sure. Maybe it was the Blackwood Bros.
Yes, it was on there 1960 "Peace o Lord" album, and it's my favorite song on the record. It is fairly common, and shows up cheap on ebay all the time.
Gives me chills!!!

This was the best incarnation of The Statesmen IMHO. You can't beat Rosie, Jack, Doy, and Big Chief, not forgetting Hovie. Amen!
