I could not help but to cover my mouth in awe as I watched this! With Yagudin​, there is (was) always a unique sensuality that makes me hold my breath! You can tell through every movement that he is deeply in love with skating... but this is just beautiful!

I regret not seeing this video sooner. Amazing display of his skill, passion, footwork... I can't help but to keep thinking 'beautiful.'

I can't help it, I've watched this video a hundred times and yet, it still makes me shiver. Not from fear, but from excitement. He is able to make you feel all his emotions, you can feel his serenity, the wind in your face as he gathers speed, the coldness of the ice, his heart pumping... Very few skaters have achieved that, being able to communicate with the audience so strongly. I find it a lot more enjoyable than to look at Joubert or Plushenko doing a quadruple-triple.

Wow, this is one ambitious number! However, I think Oksana Baiul's is still the best, because in order to dance to this song one would have to be as slinky as she is. Otherwise for the men, it's mostly fancy footwork. I bet he wears that kind of shirt just to show off his arms and shoulders. Cad. j/k

I honestly don't think he was trying to portray Christ in any way, that wasn't nearly as theatrical as he usually is in terms of being true to the source material. Never knew Oksana skated to that, but am not surprised, The Last Temptation of Christ is a pretty common piece.

Oksana Baiul is the first skater I can remember performing to this number-she did it in a kind of belly dancer costume-and it was a stunning performance. Imo she still owns the number-Yagudin is great of course, and maybe Grishuk & Platov did it justice but to me Baiul's routine was much harder to pull off because she did it alone on the ice. Her only real 'prop' was her face and head covering and a little 'Aladdin's' lamp. Her original performance was the best-in 1994 I think.

I did see that after I saw this, it was pretty strange. Arabian poses and costume to this? I'm a film score purist. If someone uses a piece of film score, whether it be for skating, dancing, gymnastics, videos, etc, then it MUST have something to do with the film the music comes from. Without the film, the music would be nonexistent.

what i like best in his performances is this preference for details and significance. Plushenko is really skilled and he skates beautifully but Yagudin adds more significance and passion when he`s on ice.

Hi Kathryn,

The original version of this song (Peter Gabriel) doesn't have the voices added. The voice part (when Alexei is in the white sheet) is, I think, an added track, put on to make the performance the length it needs to be. The "real" music comes in when he starts to skate. I'd love you to see Kurt Browning's version of this...it is brilliant! Alexei is wonderful too, but he lacks the 'Middle Eastern' feel Kurt has, especially with the arm movements.
