This is a great example to prove that guitar tone is in the fingers and NOT the gear. Nothing could be further from his famous Fender Strat than that hollowbody Gretsh thing he is playing and nothing could be further from his Hiwatt amps than that Fender Bassman Tweed sitting there. And still, that tone is PURE Gilmour. Guy could play a Hondo Les Paul copy through a home stereo preamp and it would sound better than just about anybody in the world.
@bohs1984 That's what kills me about all these people on these guitar forums. "Hi, I'm trying to sound like SRV/Hendrix/Gilmour, et al and I wanna know what gear I can use that'll give me that song"...equipment is like .00001% of it. You can give Hendrix a First Act guitar and an 1w amp and he'll play purple haze better than someone with a '68 vintage strat, marshall JCM 800 and a vintage fuzz face.
i think the story goes, he was in a taxi, and mid conversation with the taxi driver, floyd came on the radio, and he stated how much he "hates them" the taxi driver turned out to be related to gilmour i think , anyhow this is how they got together to make the wall movie featuring geldof! i may not be exactly spot on but this is the version i have heard multiple times!
I really like this sort of toned down version. The mostly acoustic aspect completely changes the feel of it, and shows the piece's versatility quite well, and I love the inclusion of the cello in the verse part.
Why has Bob not learnt the lyrics he did play Pink in the wall movie. You would think he could have learnt a few lines. Seems a bit amateurish standing up there with a piece of scrap paper, dissapointing Bob!!
@Dogbitevictim I think it's because he can't stand Pink Floyd. I don't know what he's doing there, despite that. I don't know why he was in a movie that was written off of a band that he can't stand. But nonetheless...
Who's the person playing that cello immediately to Gilmour's left? She's incredibly talented, what with being able to make her fingers fly that fast on the strings and never miss a single note...
@Floydian994 At least Bob made it clear it was best to have the lyrics on paper, anyway it is his style he's always been casual about things. Take David Bowie when he did this at the RAH he used an auto-cue on the floor, which is not different. Bob is real, Bowie is fake.
@cnaptakmockba Lol are you serious?? First off, there is no proof Bowie was reading anything. Besides, I saw the behind the scenes of this tour and Bowie is rehearsing without reading any lyrics. Bowie is not a fake and he seems to have the upmost respect for Gilmour and Floyd because of how he acts when he finished singing.
@250mikelwhitlock Yes, mr Geldof is really off here, especially in first verse. He is something of a genius in other situations though, so I do see why David brought him along. BTW, do you know the connection between mr Geldof and PF, and this song in particular?
It's not like Bob's got no time these days between doing fuck all and maybe the odd bit of fuck all to LEARN THE LYRICS????

Every human being should know the lyrics to this song. Reading from a piece of paper just looks unprofessional...
