  • Hello Tony, I hope you can help me. I'm planning to get The Motif xs. I also have a WX5. I was wondering if this combination is good. I tried the VL70 but I didn't like the sounds and the lack of utilities, like making your own sounds, or adding natural sounds, MIDI applications, among others. Also, would I need to get a PLG150AN?

  • @cyberpuma79 I don't know. I've never used a Motif XS. But I'm pretty sure the PLGs don't work in ANY of the XS products...

  • god love you ^.^

  • Go EWIUSB the best

  • i really like this idea of electric saxophone but what about playing it live. does it have to be hooked up to a computer or can you run it through an amp or some speaker that i can take to gigs and jam sessions. i dont want to carry around a computer with me.

  • sounds great... been looking at the ewi 4000 also, what are your thoughts on that as a little less expensive item?.... does the wx5 have various fingering setting options, i would like to find a wind synth that allows me the same fingering style as a recorder, is that possible with the wx5.... how about changing keys, is this just a matter of setting a dial?..pardon me lack of written music theory, i play by ear so far, but am learning more on youtube about music...happy tunes....aloha, forest

  • hey Tony Thank you very much. Your videos encourage me to get WX5 but I kind of discourage because is like playing a different instrument. I gonna try again or I gonna wait until somebody makes a flute wind controller.

  • Hi Tony, I just bought a WX5 and is driving me crazy. I'm a flute player, so I set up the fingering for flute. It's kind uncomfortable to push an extra key to get octaves. When you set it up for sax you have to push that key to get octaves? I have never played a sax and I tough this could be easier. THX

  • @vernymusic Yes, the octave keys work the same way for the Sax modes. But Sax Players don't really mind, because there's an octave key on the sax. You'll just need to get your mind wrapped around the idea, because on the WX5, blowing harder only makes it louder. :)

  • Where does the breath condensation end up (or go to) in these wind controllers?

  • Right out the other end... and onto the floor.

  • Hmm. Basically just like any other wind instrument I guess.

I was curious because there is a WX5 on Craigslist and I have been interested in these wind controllers for some time. I thought the EWI might be more attractive because of the on board synth but I like the reed style of the Yamaha.

  • Hi Tony,

could you please give some advice. I´ve got a WX7 from ebay and as you I´ve the PLG150-VL. But I can´t get any pitchbend with the lipsensor. What are the right settings for this in the PLG and what do I have to fix in the WX?

    Many thanks in advance

    Andreas

  • As long as things are at "default," you don't need to set anything up in the PLG to get pitchbend to work. You may need to recalibrate your WX7 though.

I don't have a WX7 so I don't know how to do that, but you can probably find the manual online...

  • Thanks Tony, I will try to recalibrate my WX. As I heard from somebody else the pitchbend works the same way as in the WX5.

I´ll be back if I still have problems with that.

  • Zzzzzzz.... nice equipment though :)

  • Tony I have a Motif es keyboard. Can I plug the WX5 into it rather than purchasing the VL70? I guess I would have to purchase the card you mentioned also. THX

  • Yes, you can do that. You do NOT have to have the PLG150-VL to make the WX5 work. There are lots of good wind voices in the MOTIF that the WX5 will work well with.

  • Well done, Tony. You're right, Yamaha gear is the best. My WX5 rig is 100% Yamaha and I love it.

I use the VL70m. Not sure if I'd gain anything with the PLG 150VL though.

A Patchman chip would be nice though :)

  • Does anyone know where I could find such a thing in Austria or southern Germany? Everywhere I ask they say that this isn't sold in Europe.

I know I could buy one on e-bay, I've been thinking about that but I don't want to buy one without having even tried it once.

    Greetings from Austria, sounds great!

  • A little confused with so much gear you mentioned, where does that trumpet sound live? it sounds more realistic than most I've played or tried out

  • That particular trumpet is a voice in the PLG-150VL module in the Yamaha Motif-ES Rack.

  • I went to the music store and checked out the motif es rack and there was this sound called "baby trumpet" that sounded pretty realistic. Now, what is the plg-150vl module, something you put into the motif, like a memory card of some sort?

  • Nevermind, I just checked and is a little card called a plug-in tha you put into it I guess. Sorry Sr, I am new to this, I am a spoiled classical guitar player venturing into the world of midi guitar for the first time

  • I enjoyed this demonstration. I am not sure what the Power Supply does. Is it power only?

  • Yeah, basically. With the TOWPS, you only need a single cable, and no longer need batteries in the WX5. The two alternatives are: Use an AC Walwart PLUS the MIDI cable, both connected to the WX5, or use 6 AA batteries in the WX5, plus the bigger MIDI cable.

  • Right, sounds neat. The other "option" is using Yamaha's VL-70 with the collected cable, but yours provides a solution for alternative tone generators. Very cool.

  • Yep, I'm using the VL70m (Patchman Turbo) in another video.

  • Way cool man!

  • Hey, back in the day I was a Clarinet player. Are the fingerings similar?

  • Nice video,I've been wanting to get one of these. Is saxophone your main instrument?

  • Yep... I own three different saxes (Soprano / Alto / Tenor) as well as flute.

  • two things 1) that is truly amazing and as a wind player I'm impressed. 2) how much does the instrument weigh?

  • It's pretty lightweight.. Probably 2 pounds or so...

  • Just swap the mouthpiece with the recorder mouthpiece and flip the switches to FLUTE mode. Check out the manual.

  • hey I have it but how can I change the reed to non reed (recorder like) mouth piece? and how do I change the fingerings to flute??? (I play flute)

  • hi Tony, really awesome, nice video, but change the sound source, please, the yamaha VL-70m, is a superb sound and mare dedicated stuff, greetings, mr

  • wonderful like trumpet!! I going to buy one

  • Инструмент не фонтан, юзайте AKAI EWI4000s :):):)AKAI RULE!

  • Hmm. I don't speak russian. Care to translate yourself? The online translaters say the tool isn't a fountain. Can't be right, eh?

  • I want to say, what the Yamaha is not good wind controller, and an AKAI - best! But I have Yamaha WX5 too, and I can say what the Yamaha is not comfortable wind controller... Sorry, my English very-very bad. You are good man:)

  • Are the fingerings on a wx5 the same as on a clarinet?

  • Not sure about that. I imagine they're similar; check out the WX5 manual online and compare the two.

  • The fingerings are more like a saxophone or a recorder than a clarinet. I have mine set up so that the basic scale is in the key of C and each octave is fingered the same way.

  • Fingering: specifies the WX5 fingering mode -- "Saxophone (a)," "Saxophone (b)," "Saxophone (c)," or "Flute".

    from the yamaha site

  • Goode! I have the Castaway music Demo on my keyboard. Awesome playing!

  • I wondered how many people would recognize the name!

  • I founded your video using the "castaway yamaha" for people playing this music!

    bye

  • hi tony i m viorel y play with yamaha wx 5 i have a videoclip here i m an reed to the party
