  • great video! When I came here, I wanted to check if the camera is nice or not. But now I impressed your video! Nice video, nice music. Go for it.

  • what lense?

  • wow - nice color rendering - bit to much dolly :) but hey thats just me...

  • Really impressive video, and icing on the cake is adding for Gymnopedie No. 1 -- on of the greatest compositions ever. I admire your eye for the scene. I just got the same GH1 w/hack and have been looking at example footage for inspiration and Serenity certainly did it. Kudos!

  • @RajaSandhuDotCom Glad u enjoyed it

  • What were the optimal settings for this hack? Did you just go by what is mentioned by tester 13?

I have a GH1 too but don't really understand all the setting's ie bitrate. Your video is fantastically crisp so just wondered what you found to be the ideal settings? many Thanks

  • @surfdudetomaki Ya I did..easiest way to do it.

  • Nice video, with SDHC did you use it?

  • @paco1207 Sandisk Extreme 3

  • beautiful, beautiful... amazing quality... thinking about getting one GH1 instead of a canon.. BUT, how about shooting photography? it also takes decent photos? oh, what lens were you using here? thanks for sharing!

  • @ognistik Thanks ognistik...Stock lens as well as pancake 20mm. For photos it's great in daylight but mediocre at best at night. GH2 is far superior in both photos and videos.

  • Hi. Great footage. I also have a hacked GH1 + Neoscene. Does it make sense to shoot at 24p with the hack and then process with Neoscene. I only manage to get an .avi file at either 16f/s or 20 f/s and not 24 f/s. Why is this?

  • @zurriagazo71 Thanks...No need for Neoscene if using 24p hack or Adobe CS5. Neoscene is only needed to transcode the interlaced footage from the unhacked Gh1 to progressive. I've only recently started using the 24p hack so I can't comment on your issues with the odd frame rates. Sorry

  • @outdoorsfan87 Thanks so much for the quick reply. Sometimes the simplest information is the hardest to find. In this case, the files will be .mts straight from the camera, right? In that case, could you please suggest a workflow to follow or any editing software? Many thanks again. If you are online, i´d like quick chat with you. My msn is antoniogilcamacho at hotmail com.

  • @zurriagazo71 .mts is right...I'm a premiere user so adobe is killin it right now. FCP X is not for everyone but it is a cheap solution at $300 I believe. Goodluck

  • I like your video , did you use anamorphic lense ? and im not sure what is that mean about you HACKED ?

  • This has got to be some of the best GH1 footage ive seen! cant wait getting mine this weekend!

  • I have a gh-1(3), and I'm a bit confused as to what you mean by settings 40/50/70.

  • What's the song name?

  • @barbafarfa Says in the credits at the end.

  • @outdoorsfan87 How stupid I feel now :(

  • @soundsofsil3nce Thanks for the tip but I see the benefit to making the sequence anamorphic in post, simply because you can make awesome vertical pans with the extra breathing room top and bottom.

  • what does "hack" mean? sorry if thats a dumb question im starting to get into film and im going around asking my friends questions

  • @HIXavier1992 Google Ptool for gh1

  • @outdoorsfan87 Any color grading or did you use something like nolgastic and... wow what did you do?

  • @BasikBrigade I always use smooth setting with -2 for all adjustments..best way to grade afterwards.

For this I only used some contrast adjustments and sharpness for a little punch.

  • @outdoorsfan87 Ok, thanks. So you did grade. I think im goind to pick one up soon. May or may not hack it depending on risk of bricking it but thanks for feedback.

  • @BasikBrigade All footage should be graded when shooting in SMOOTH..it's a flat image. Don't bother getting the GH1 unless you do indeed hack it...otherwise the GH2 is far superior..video and stills. Going to be getting one myself very soon as my new A cam. Happy Shooting

  • @outdoorsfan87 Thank you again, GH2 is too pricey, worked a bunch summer just to be able to barley afford gh1, im fairly sure ill hack it my only concern is lenses and their prices, not sure what to start off with...

  • @BasikBrigade Best to get a lens with shallow DOF, say the 20 mm pancake f1.7 for roughly $400. You could also go with the Nokton f0.95 but it's close to a grand and full manual. Beautiful lens though.

    Goodluck

  • @outdoorsfan87 Alright, thanks for all of your help.

    Goodluck to you too

  • Beautiful footage. I assume you used an anamorphic lens. Which one did you use?

  • @manti212 Thanks Manti...no anamorphic actually..just the stock lens and the 20mm 1.7. I simply put it together in a timeline with the 2.35 aspect.

  • wow, great work. Man that's sharp, until i go full screen. Damn youtube compression. Did you post on vimeo in full ?

  • @WDPlumbing Thanks, find it here, vimeo.c_m/13288612 though remember that VIMEO compresses to 720p so to see the full 1080p, download the file.

  • Very Nice!!!.....

  • Sorry if I may sound silly, but which lens did you use in this video, thanks.

  • @PHILLYATCHi Stock and the 20mm 1.7 Pancake

  • ...with settings: 40/50/70 ; is that about the lens settings? Sorry for this stupid question, I am quite an amateur with this. Beautifull shots btw!

  • @ArnoldVeeman Good guess but no...lol That's alright. They refer to the hacked settings for camera recording bandwidth.

  • @outdoorsfan87 I finaly succeeded to download and install the hack software on my mac. I don't understand where I can alter the settings the way you did. I just bought a nice zenitar fish eye lens namely, and it is not really fisheye looking for the sensor is not 35mm. But I've seen some pretty good things on the internet with the GH1 and this lens; maybe they were hacked, I don't know. I really want to change the aspect ration to 2.35, is that possible with that hack?

  • @ArnoldVeeman 2.35 is not possible with the hack...you simply need to make your timeline 2.35 in your editing software of choice. With PTOOL3D, if it does work on a MAC, then I imagine it looks similar to the PC, so you edit all the values on the bottom once you've selected the option in the list above.

  • @ArnoldVeeman Which program did u use on the mac ?

  • also, do you have a dolly? what sort of gear do you use?

  • @surfdudetomaki Ya I made my own dolly, nearly identical to the official Glidetrack but half the price. Check this site out:

    dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?145701-DIY-IndieSlider...

I saw your latest vid, very nice shots, though it doesn't play in HD; what do you edit with?

I just got back from 2 months in Africa, my first teaser will be up today :)

    Cheers

  • hey, brilliant video. I was wondering how you hack the camera, and is it beneficial. It appears the quality is better, but is it a big struggle to do it. What actually changes with this hack? I love my GH1. I am now studying in college atm, and my dad bought the camera for me and i havent looked back. ive made loads of videos with it. i am really eager to do some more videos and the quality of this was superb. any info you could give would be much appreciated.

  • @surfdudetomaki Hey Surf, thanks for the comments. The only reason why I might end up keeping the GH1 over the GH2 is because of the hack; though the few videos that are up from the GH2 show a stunning image even at 24Mbps. Check out this site for info on how to hack, it's very easy but finding the right stable settings for your GH1 takes time.

  • Beautiful.

  • Great footage! What was the lens used?

  • @mikesoccer1 Thanks Mike, stock lens and pancake 20mm 1.7

  • @outdoorsfan87 That's absolutely fantastic for those two lenses! Which settings did you have it on?

  • @mikesoccer1 Smooth set to -2 for every setting. 50th shutter and ISO 125. I've done alot of reading on the best settings and supposedly those are it. But the hack seriously made it what it is. Really turns it into a new camera. Don't think the GH2 will come close, but hopefully it will be superior in low light.

  • @outdoorsfan87 Yeah i've been loving my gh1 thus far as well. I'm just trying to figure out which settings deliver the best result in different scenarios. It seems to me that it is definitely more of an outdoor camera for sure. Unless there is a lighting kit available for use then it performs ok. How are you liking the pancake lens indoors?

  • @mikesoccer1 It does a much better job then the stock at f2.8 or 1.7 but my camera seems to have it bad when it comes to vertical banding in med to low light. Have talked to Panny Technician but he hasn't got back to me for nearly 2 months now. Can't say I'm happy with their customer service.

  • This video really is a masterpiece, I just love it, will post it on my Facebook site. I want to add one comment that was rarely ever mentioned. It is so obvious that the panning of the DH is filmlike, reminds me of the great movie BARAKA that was turned with a huge 70mm camera. Then watch all those vids with the Canon 5D when people pan left or right or up-down a building, it looks awful and artificial and it seems to me nobody ever complained about it. My compliments for this masterpiece!

  • What a wonderful video and the music by Eric Satie so well chosen! I will show this video to all my friends here in Phnom Penh, including my Canon Dealer friends who really think the Canon 5D is the nec plus ultra - wrong. I see this video in full 1080i on a 23" Apple Cinema Display (Mac Pro) and all is razor sharp. Can anybody tell me what it means to 'hack' the GH1? I need to know about this before I buy it. Thanks.

  • @ipublica Thanks ipublica, much appreciated. When hacked, the GH1 can surpass the 5D in terms on bandwidth. Where is fails to surpass is in low light, the small sensor just can't compete with the full size of the 5D. Hoping the GH2 narrows the gap in that area. More to come when I get back from Africa.

  • @outdoorsfan87 Thanks for the kind words. Now I am a bit confused what to buy the normal GH1 or a hacked one. I talked with various guys here on Youtube about it and after all, I wonder if you will not lose your warranty when you hack the camera? The second thing is I have seen several videos here that are done with a normal GH1 that are equally fantastic. I do not know enough about it, but on one video I saw they were speaking about a Pentax hack that gives you 60p, but that is the last I need.

  • Some people say that while the GH1 is superior in video to the Canon 5D, photo-wise, the story is different. Is that true? But then, honestly I would step up to a Mamiya middle-format camera, the RZ27 and buy the digital back, okay, it's an investment but one that pays. Photos taken with a Mamiya, Pentax or Hasselblad you can print them poster-size without losing any inch of sharpness. And I got to study a lot about the 5D and you know what, the processor is not adequate.

  • Awesome video. Love it all. Best vid on YOUTUBE for me right now.

  • Thanks Linogq!

  • OMG..It is so beautiful..Very well written theme "Serenity". Love It ! Please upload some more of your great work. Thanks so much.

  • @wes001tech Thanks wes! I have all my vids on Vimeo but most are very different.

    Here's my page: vimeo.com/user572742/videos

In Africa till end of Nov. Look for some new videos after that.

  • beautiful work... what equipment did you use for your dolly shots? what tripod? Also did you use nat sound from the camera....

  • @ptorresphotography Thanks ptorres....Tripod was a cheap Manfrotto with 701hdv fluid head, DIY dolly from Igus.com, and all sound was recorded with the Zoom H4N.

  • waoo impressed. what lens did u use? and can u tell me if its uk model will i be able to only have 25p what about 24pN. appreciate thanx

  • Thanks, Gaaf, stock and 20mm 1.7. With the hack you can switch to NTSC so 24p!

  • How did you get this! All the GH1s are un-hackable now! Panasonic released a new update that kills the hack.

  • @JewTubeExposed If you haven't bought the camera since the 1.34 update then simply don't update. IF you have, then hopefully an update will come out soon. Don't know what Panasonic is thinking; they should be embracing this hack with arms open.
