@tuquik4u The filming was probably in mainland China, however this martial art is mostly known for its southern Chinese origins were the dominant Chinese dialect was Cantonese. Therefore, I would say that the proper name for it would be using the Cantonese dialect, in which it would be pronounced as "Wing Chun"

@SkuntFak This guy learnt ‘Wing Chun’ from the same great master of Bruce Lee, Mr. IP Man but WONG was senior than Bruce. IP Man did not teach Bruce all the time but sometimes the other senior students, like WONG did. They have never entered into a real fight but had really exchanged real punches and kicks when practice gone wrong but it was eventually draw and separated by others. @schulleee nope it definitely was WSL. They exchanged letters frequently, it even said it in the letters. Wong taught most of what Bruce knew about Wing Chun. Yip Man often delegated teaching duties to his senior students.
I speak Cantonese and Mandarin both and I am from Hong Kong. Wing Chun (WC), Ving Tsun (VT) and Wing Tsun are the same thing. However, Wing Tsun (WT) is the trademark of Leung Ting's style. And Yong Chun is the Mandarin pronunciation.
what an excellent video, basically explaining the different in real fight situation that WC is using the advantage of the economy and straight line of defense/strike vs a normal reaction. The boxing practice is the similarity to the WC move that you follow your opponent. eye opening old school WC. The kicking part explained WC does not chamber leg. He demonstrated well using normal method and WC method in every example move.
MMMMmmm well from the looks of things .... me not speaking Chinese .... I can't be absolutely sure .... but I would say he is explaining the applications learnt from the Chum Kiu form.
Wongs demonstration partner here is Chan Kim Man. This clip is missing the first section of Chan demonstrating Chum Kiu, as the full clip is 12mins long. It can be found on Google Video and is an excellent example of Chum Kiu...
Actually Wing Chun was Bruce Lee's spelling ... It was change in HK to Ving Tsun as they thought WC to be demeaning due to it's popular abbreviation for a Water Closet -Toilet. Some also use the Wing Tsun abbreviation as an alternative. There a little history lesson for you. :-)
@Transatlanticism04 that's funny... All the Mandarin speakers that I know, from different parts of China all pronounce it as Yong Chun... According to other sources Wing Chun and Ving Tsun are just Romanized spellings of the Cantonese pronounciation. Maybe you need to brush up on your Mandarin homes...
Really .... cool what lineage in Hong Kong are you I know a few Sifu's there? The confusing thing is the most famous training place I know in Hong Kong is the Ving Tsun Athletics Association, do you know why they use the Mandarin rather then the Cantonese being in Hong Kong?
in term of dialect sound, there some similarity between cantonese and mandarin about 25 to 33% of language, just a slightly different accent. I notice he spoke 'doon jowk' quite frequently. This mean 'technique' and it sound quite similar to cantonese as well. That is why i can pick up these words. 'Sau' means hand, cantonese and mandarin.
. I just read some bio on sifu wong. He is definitely under rated. I think he contributed alot to bruce lee's teachings. Bruce would never be disciplined and focus without the wise word and teaching of sifu Wong.
I'm just a gwai-lo, but I'm pretty sure in Hong Kong the language is Cantonese. I'm also pretty sure Sifu Wong spoke Cantonese. If someone else tells me he is speaking Mandarin in this video then I might believe mtube620.
hi zbadboy, u r 50% right. In HK, 99.9% people do speaks cantonese. However, many HK'ers do know some or fluent in mandarin as well. I was born in kowloon, so i know the difference between cantonese and mandarin and sifu in this video was speaking mandarin. Mandarin is more dominant chinese language, as there are way more chinese in china than in HK or guangdong province. I regret i never learned mandarin but i do know when someone is speaking mandarin

We don't play patty cake and forward and backward two hand chi sao all the time. we don't sit on our heels and we have a great deal of footwork. The top Masters in TWC have studied 'modified' also. In fact, Master Keith Mazza studied modified for 9 years before discovering TWC and how much more>>

Modified has center line theory which can get one into trouble. TWC (The original) has center line AND central lines,much smarter & more practical in real fighting.

I have black belts in several styles and studied under dan Inosanto, grappler-shootfighter Eric Paulson and others. This experience combined years later with many years learning TWC has made me realise & see what works in the real world.

Somehing I noticed: When Wong was still alive, never was his reputation attacked, his honor carelessly polluted or his actual skills and fighting record doubted by anyone of name and reputation. Barry Lee told me: Wong went to Taiwan for a match. When the guy finally dropped on the ground Wong was hasty to knock him out, so he stepped in too carelessly. That was when a kick hit him in the groin he was lifted and thrown out the ring. He then knocked him out but lost the fight, and was injured. When he returned to HK Yip and he discussed that for a long time. In the end Yip agreed that Wong could not have deflected that attack. So came Yip reintegrated the low Gaun-Sao into Siu Lim Tao.

Too many martial arts masters teach without direct street experience. I'm not saying that's bad, but those few who have been in real fights gain alot more credibility when teaching. From what I heard WSL fought about 50-60 fights and never lost a single one of them! No matter what some people think about WC, no one can argue that this man could kick almost any ass in his hey-day!
This is so good. All who knew WSL said he was a not only a great figther but also a great man. Really wish more Great but humble Master like him was aorund.

Bruce Lee was very cocky, he was good! was he the best? There were people out there could could have beat him, he trained under WSL after he trained with Ip Man, Bruce did not make it to Ip Man's funeral everyone knows that, bruce never finished his WT training but went another way that he felt he should go, when you think your the best you let people know and people also challenged him alot, WSL was a great WT teacher and practitioner and was better at WT than Bruce.
you shouldnt say that, WSL was Bruce's teacher, not Yip Man(twas his sigong). WSL did badly bruised up Lee's face when he found out Bruce was telling other students away saying Wong was ill. Wong's simple take on WC for first year trainny, IS the basis of jeet kune do, the rest was bruce trying to fill in the gaps.
Each time I learn something new in Wing chun, and each time I grow, I see another fluid technique that master Lueng used with ease in this video. Regardless of how often I watch it.

@tuquik4u The filming was probably in mainland China, however this martial art is mostly known for its southern Chinese origins were the dominant Chinese dialect was Cantonese. Therefore, I would say that the proper name for it would be using the Cantonese dialect, in which it would be pronounced as "Wing Chun"

He is a great master. I've learned under him for half year after I am already a TWD instructor. He is not an old school master, but an thoughtful, creative, reflective and innovative sifu. His form is a little different from other students of Yip Man. As he said, after discussion with his master Yip Man, they both agree that people with different figure/height needs different techniques. That is why his form is a little different.

@SkuntFak This guy learnt ‘Wing Chun’ from the same great master of Bruce Lee, Mr. IP Man but WONG was senior than Bruce. IP Man did not teach Bruce all the time but sometimes the other senior students, like WONG did. They have never entered into a real fight but had really exchanged real punches and kicks when practice gone wrong but it was eventually draw and separated by others. @schulleee nope it definitely was WSL. They exchanged letters frequently, it even said it in the letters. Wong taught most of what Bruce knew about Wing Chun. Yip Man often delegated teaching duties to his senior students.

I speak Cantonese and Mandarin both and I am from Hong Kong. Wing Chun (WC), Ving Tsun (VT) and Wing Tsun are the same thing. However, Wing Tsun (WT) is the trademark of Leung Ting's style. And Yong Chun is the Mandarin pronunciation.

what an excellent video, basically explaining the different in real fight situation that WC is using the advantage of the economy and straight line of defense/strike vs a normal reaction. The boxing practice is the similarity to the WC move that you follow your opponent. eye opening old school WC. The kicking part explained WC does not chamber leg. He demonstrated well using normal method and WC method in every example move.

Actually Wing Chun was Bruce Lee's spelling ... It was change in HK to Ving Tsun as they thought WC to be demeaning due to it's popular abbreviation for a Water Closet -Toilet. Some also use the Wing Tsun abbreviation as an alternative. There a little history lesson for you. :-)

in term of dialect sound, there some similarity between cantonese and mandarin about 25 to 33% of language, just a slightly different accent. I notice he spoke 'doon jowk' quite frequently. This mean 'technique' and it sound quite similar to cantonese as well. That is why i can pick up these words. 'Sau' means hand, cantonese and mandarin.

hi zbadboy, u r 50% right. In HK, 99.9% people do speaks cantonese. However, many HK'ers do know some or fluent in mandarin as well. I was born in kowloon, so i know the difference between cantonese and mandarin and sifu in this video was speaking mandarin. Mandarin is more dominant chinese language, as there are way more chinese in china than in HK or guangdong province. I regret i never learned mandarin but i do know when someone is speaking mandarin

William Cheung is EXTREMELY skilled & one of the best Wing Chun practicioners in the world...which you are too sophmorically narrow minded & dim to know. YOu have not met him nor seen his skills/knowledge in fighting & WC. He teaches Traditonal Wing Chun. The forms are not as the modified WC which most teach. DOPE. He didn't finish the system because some other students found out that Lee was not 100% Chinese but had German blood. This info got back to Yip Man & Lee was basically ostracized from the school because of "Tradition". Cheung however taught Bruce bits a pieces here and there in secret & then Lee's parents shipped him off to the Usa where he got his automatic citizenship after his 18th birthday as he was born in the Usa. There were no WC Sifus in WA. for Lee to complete the system. Moron.

Cheung was a good fighter, but he was much bigger than wong and able to rely on his strength. He was never a better fighter than wong, though he was a good fighter. As for intellectually understanding the concepts behind the application of each tool, cheung never got there. He was happy to use poor technique and rely on strength. OF course this works until you find the bigger/stronger/faster opponent.

I have photos of Wong being totally outclassed in sparring by Chueng (off balance...lousy foot position...taking his whole upper body sideways and bent over off center (which goes strictly against WC principle!!). In a word..he looks LAME. Chueng always and still POUNDS foundational techniques into his students heads/body's in his teachings. You don't know what hell your talking about. In Traditional Wing Chun (The Original art)..we practice real fighting as that is what the art is designed for. We don't play patty cake and forward and backward two hand chi sao all the time. we don't sit on our heels and we have a great deal of footwork. The top Masters in TWC have studied 'modified' also. In fact, Master Keith Mazza studied modified for 9 years before discovering TWC and how much more>>

..oh and lastly synkronyk, use some common sense and realise also that TWC trains us in iron palm where we can break coconuts with a palm strike, eventually, almost effortlessly. In a fight..imagine that strike, hitting your jaw, nose, skull, ribs or elbow (hyperextending vector)...where the coconut is YOU. Think about it chum.

Think about it this way..Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris and many of Bruce Lee Co-star and producers have said that Bruce was so fast his punches couldn't be seen with the naked eye at close range...So think about that for a minute...How in the hell could WSL or anyone block what you can't see...They had to speed up the camera speed in order to catch his hand lashing out...At normal speed...it was to fast to be captured. As Dan Inosanto said..No one ever disputed Bruce was the best when he was alive.

Somehing I noticed: When Wong was still alive, never was his reputation attacked, his honor carelessly polluted or his actual skills and fighting record doubted by anyone of name and reputation. They all respected him as he did respect them. Now, since he is no more, they come out of their holes everywhere and talk dissrespectfully about a dead master. It reminds me of children: "My daddy is stronger than yours" - "No mine is...etc"

Barry Lee told me: Wong went to Taiwan for a match. When the guy finally dropped on the ground Wong was hasty to knock him out, so he stepped in too carelessly. That was when a kick hit him in the groin he was lifted and thrown out the ring. He then knocked him out but lost the fight, and was injured. When he returned to HK Yip and he discussed that for a long time. In the end Yip agreed that Wong could not have deflected that attack. So came Yip reintegrated the low Gaun-Sao into Siu Lim Tao.

1 - Linda Lee has since admitted that Bruce Lee never 'pounded Wong Jack Man into a state of demoralisation', in fact there was no clear cut winner. none.

Too many martial arts masters teach without direct street experience. I'm not saying that's bad, but those few who have been in real fights gain alot more credibility when teaching. From what I heard WSL fought about 50-60 fights and never lost a single one of them! No matter what some people think about WC, no one can argue that this man could kick almost any ass in his hey-day!

Bruce Lee was very cocky, he was good! was he the best? There were people out there could could have beat him, he trained under WSL after he trained with Ip Man, Bruce did not make it to Ip Man's funeral everyone knows that, bruce never finished his WT training but went another way that he felt he should go, when you think your the best you let people know and people also challenged him alot, WSL was a great WT teacher and practitioner and was better at WT than Bruce.

you shouldnt say that, WSL was Bruce's teacher, not Yip Man(twas his sigong). WSL did badly bruised up Lee's face when he found out Bruce was telling other students away saying Wong was ill. Wong's simple take on WC for first year trainny, IS the basis of jeet kune do, the rest was bruce trying to fill in the gaps.
