o.k thanks. My Dunbar comes in the mail next Wed. Patience yes ! total excitement to start oh yah! Is there something I could start with while I am waiting? learning to read music perhaps? Anything online ?
Thanks for posting these videos ! nice clear instruction. I am waiting for my practice chanter in the mail. I am playing around on my husbands recorder for now, I can't wait!! I will be using your videos till I have my first meeeting with my instructor.
@manoharini umm. might as well put down the recorder now.. they are not the same in what you may be doing is actually creating some muscle memories that will need to be unlearned, before starting to learn those which are correct for the chanter. Patience... is essential here.

i need some serious help, i have a chanter and im watching this video and following what this guy is saying but i cant get any good sound out of my chanter. it's new and the reed seems fine but i can't get a correct sound, it always sounds out of tune and bad. There are no teachers anywhere close to me and most videos i find arent good so i need some help.
@swanski100 : Exactly where are you located? Not all practice chanters are in tune with each other, some are up to half a step off from others. What brand chanter and reed is it? (Please tell me it's not one of those $20-30 ones from Ebay or Lark in the Morning).
@swanski100: That is the title of a tutor book, If the tutor book and chanter were $70, then keep the book, ditch the chanter and get a decent practice chanter.. A chanter / reed will cost no less than $50 - $100. The one above is no joke.. crap. You'll never get a decent sound out of it. I have a video specifically on choosing a practice chanter.
@swanski100 : The nearest pipe band, and likely tutor to Augusta that I could find quickly, is in Columbia, SC. About an hour away. For piping.. that's considered "local". I myself have a band that I drive an hour each way, following church each Sunday for practice, sometimes twice a week. That or get online lessons with Jori Chisholm, John Cairns or a few others. If you truly want to learn to play, get proper equipment, and lessons. This ain't jazz, this ain't rock and roll.
I am a beginning piper of about 5 weeks practice. Tonight I realized that I was holding the chanter much too tightly causing me undue tiredness and more importantly, robbing me of the quickness in my fingers. Thanks for the tip.
@JaxFireman The "green book" is the "College of PIping"s bagpipe tutor. I can get them for you, or google for a bagpipe dealer, such as "The British Shop", Henderson's, Midwest bagpipe supply... they all have this book. but before that.. find a person to teach you, and then use what materials they suggest.
Fantastic videos! Thank you so much for using the green book. I have the book and a chanter but no luxery of an instructor...Been playing my scale for a couple days now and have corrected several things that you pointed out. Q: My lips get very tired. They give out before my breath or anything else does. Killing me because I want to practice more but my lips wont let me. Is this normal? Even with the correct mouth position as you state in video? (was biting it before)
I am looking still. but what is the GREEN BOOK you guys keep refering to-whos the author, title, or what I need to know to find it... and is it working for you? Your post is 10 months old so you have a good idea by now how effective it is...Thanks!
Real good info, I had my chanter for a while and didn't know that info. Also love the Ironing board table! And the Dog. My dogs hate the music, they start howling!

Is the mouth peice a similar concept to a saxaphone?
12DanB 10 months ago
@12DanB
Not even close. About the only similarity is that air goes through it. The reed is way down inside that bulging part.

Thank you! Lots of simple information in this video which seems to not be available very much, like how to breathe and how to hold it.
